Our Best Winter Vacation Ideas for Both Sun and Snow

How do you like to winter? Do you dream of oceanfront views and pristine beaches? Or do you yearn for crisp mountain air and fresh powdery snow? The best winter vacations can be either. From snowshoe treks to an igloo in the French Alps, to ice caving in British Columbia, your winter getaway can be as snowy as it gets. Or you can opt for the opposite and head for the sun-kissed shores of Maui or Mauritius, where the only thing on your to-do list is to hit the beach.

Here’s our lineup of some of the best places to visit in winter for sun and snow.

An exclusive suite above the clouds and igloo escapes in Megéve

Spend an enchanted evening in a cosy igloo nestled within a fir forest. This winter, Four Seasons Hotel Megève has partnered with an igloo construction specialist to offer adventurous travellers the immersive Tasting Journey in an Igloo. First, an experienced mountain guide leads you on a snowshoe trek through the elevated terrain of Megève in the heart of the Alps. Once you arrive, step into an authentic candlelit igloo and feel yourself start to warm as you sip mulled wine. Savour an exquisite charcuterie that includes a selection of local cheeses and a curated assortment of handmade sweet treats.

Your return journey promises to be just as spectacular, as the sun sets behind the horizon, shining its final rays of the day over the snowy landscape. Later in the evening, be sure to cast your gaze upwards to marvel at the star-studded night sky.

If you’re looking for a secluded alpine evening, the Hotel offers A Night Above the Clouds, an exclusive package promising mountain-top privacy in a chic setting. You can combine a two-night stay at either property with a one-night experience in Megève’s most exclusive accommodations: Suite Idéal. The sophisticated suite blends traditional alpine architecture with contemporary flair. Envision wooden motifs, exposed ceiling beams and walls adorned with works of art carefully selected by Baroness Ariane de Rothschild. But the pièce de résistance is the sweeping view of snow-capped mountains.

On the night of your stay, Suite Idéal guests will depart from the Hotel to enjoy a 15-minute cable car ride to the exclusive suite, which is located at 1,850 metres (6,070 feet) above sea level – right above Idéal 1850 restaurant. A chilled bottle of champagne awaits your arrival. Raise a glass as you watch the sun set over Mont Blanc. A memorable dinner for two in the suite’s private dining room features local Savoyard specialties paired with carefully curated French wines. After dinner, be sure to step onto the expansive terrace and head to the telescope for a panoramic stargazing experience.

Come morning, breakfast is served as the sun rises over Mont Blanc and the Aravis mountain range. Suite Idéal’s premier location on the summit allows you the rare privilege of being the very first to hit the freshly blanketed ski slopes. The resident personal attendant is on hand to guide you as you embark on the journey of your choice, whether you’re an expert skier or prefer a more leisurely snowshoe trek across pine-shaded forests. Both properties also offer a range of activities from dogsledding and snowmobiling to helicopter and hot-air balloon rides.

Relaxation, rejuvenation and a little decadence in Vail

You may come to Vail for the legendary skiing, but the experiences off the slopes at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail will have you eager to take off the skis.

Warm up with the quintessential alpine après-ski experience with an order of the Resort’s famous Haute Chocolate for two at The Remedy Bar. The decadent, show-stopping drink is served year-round and has become a guest favourite. Made with two types of Valrhona chocolate, steamed milk, house-made marshmallows, hand-crafted chocolate lattice and chocolate shavings, the demand for it is so great that there is a Haus Chocolatier whose sole responsibility is to create this dreamy concoction.

After a day on the slopes, soothe your muscles at the newly renovated Spa, which offers a redesigned sanctuary of wellness and tranquillity. It encompasses 13 enhanced treatment rooms, modernized locker rooms and shower areas, and rejuvenated hot tub and relaxation spaces. But the transformation extends beyond its physical spaces. The Spa offers a comprehensive wellness program centred around the core pillars of rest, recovery, sleep, slowing down and meditation, with services that prioritize results-driven therapies and holistic well-being.

Come nightfall, indulge in an al fresco swim under the stars in the year-round heated pool and take a dip into one of the Resort’s outdoor hot tubs. Or reconnect with family and friends at the grand outdoor fireplace, where roasting s’mores is a must.

Ice adventures and a mountain-top rendezvous in Whistler

Elegant cocktails, ice caves, nighttime hikes and multisensory dining experiences await you at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler.

For the adventurous, the Heli Ice Cave Explore experience takes you on a journey through the Ice Age. Conquer the terrain of the ice cap and observe its ice caves, volcanic peaks and wildlife. Your guide will lead you through a labyrinth of chambers of aqua blue magnificence where you will enjoy an artisan lunch.

The Love is in the Air Helicopter Tour transports couples around the spectacular Coast Mountains, showcasing panoramic views, expansive glaciers and the mighty peaks that dot the landscape. If weather permits, you might stop for a mountain-top rendezvous with a signature cup of Four Seasons hot cocoa and s’mores as you soak in 360-degree views of British Columbia’s wilderness.

There are more opportunities to explore the wilderness with a nighttime hike or snowshoeing around Lost Lake, guided by knowledgeable staff. The excursion concludes with a mug of our signature mulled wine.

Come evening, embark on a different kind of adventure at Sidecut Steakhouse. The five-course multisensory chef’s tasting menu experience blends classical tradition with modern innovation in meticulously crafted dishes made with exclusive ingredients such as Hokkaido scallops, A5 Olive-Fed Wagyu, Alaskan king crab and foie gras.

Steep, rugged slopes and wild gray wolves in Jackson Hole

Get your adrenaline going at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole. Dash into the mountainside First Chair Grab & Go market for a quick power snack, then be the first to hit the fresh powdery slopes. Get there via an improved high-speed quad, making its debut for the 2024–2025 ski season. Travelling at 1,000 feet per minute, the trip lasts just over four minutes. There are few other places in America where skiers can gain 1,600 vertical feet so quickly. As a bonus, lift designers also made the updated chairs heavier and more comfortable so that they are less likely to be blown around.

Looking to take a break from the slopes without sacrificing any time away from the great outdoors? A Day with the Wolves Experience immerses you in the beauty and grandeur of Yellowstone National Park. Search for elusive gray wolves in their natural habitat – one of the few places in the world where you can consistently see wolves in the wild – along with moose, elk, bison, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, bald eagles and golden eagles. Expert naturalists will guide your epic day-long adventure.

Recap your day over a handcrafted cocktail or mocktail in the newly opened and elegantly designed 80 Proof. This hidden private bar, reminiscent of Prohibition-era speakeasies, offers a menu of light bites and an extensive beverage selection. It’s the perfect way to wind down after an adrenaline-filled day.

Inhale the fragrance of plumeria as you dip into the adults-only infinity pool or set out to explore the island with a customized itinerary designed just for you.

Snorkelling with seahorses and sugar cane picnics in Mauritius

Mauritius is an island nation on the Indian Ocean known for its beaches, lagoons, reefs, rainforests and waterfalls. It’s also where you’ll find a rare opportunity to snorkel with seahorses.

Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is set alongside Mauritius’ most pristine and largest lagoons. The Resort plays a major role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem within the surrounding mangroves and reef. Rick-Ernest Bonnier, the Resort’s Ocean Environment Manager, is currently developing a seahorse conservation project, while monitoring a small seahorse population living among other species of fish and coral. Seahorses are a unique species found in shallow tropical waters and are at high risk of extinction. He’ll guide you on a snorkelling adventure where you can observe and learn about them in their natural habitat.

On land, enjoy a family picnic or cooking class surrounded by sugar canes. If you’re feeling more laid-back, chefs can prepare a picnic for your enjoyment as you relax with a glass of champagne or freshly pressed juice beneath the swaying trees.

You can also delve into the melting pot of Mauritius’ diverse cultures through its flavourful Creole cuisine. Learn how to cook under the guidance of Resort chefs, who share family recipes handed down for generations. Tailor a menu to your tastes using locally sourced herbs and spices and savour the fruits of your labour afterwards.

The Flavours of Festive

Gathering around the table to celebrate with friends and family is one of the most cherished parts of the holiday season. This year, we’re pulling out all the stops to help make it happen. Our chefs and culinary teams have created tasteful experiences designed to surprise and delight, capturing that festive spirit and spreading holiday cheer no matter where your travels take you. Join us and share in the season of togetherness – we can’t wait for you to see what we’ve got in store.

The perfect cabin meal in Minneapolis

Downtown Minneapolis may not be the first place you’d expect to find a cozy mountain village, but at Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis, that’s exactly what you’ll find this winter season. From early November through the end of March – with some help from a cluster of intimate, insulated cedar dining cabins – this year-old downtown Hotel transforms its fourth-floor Riva Terrace into Nordic Village, a winter wonderland with flickering fires, string lights and vintage skis perched by the door. In the comfort of your cabin, tuck into a four-course tasting menu, including comforting plates such as onion soup and smoked salmon with rösti potatoes, cheese fondue paired with wine or local beers, and Minnesota-shaped s’mores for a sweet finish. Each cabin also features skylights made for stargazing as well as personalized Spotify accounts and TVs for watching your favourite sporting events or holiday classics.

A sustainable feast in Tamarindo, México

Consider a new home for the holidays: Let the cliffside suites with private infinity pools at Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México, be where you and your loved ones create memories this year. Tucked within a 3,000-acre nature reserve, the Resort sits on a private peninsula with access to both jungle and coast. And when it comes to food, the ingredients in your festive feasts are either grown on site at Rancho Ortega – the property’s 35-acre farm – caught by divers, locally sourced or foraged from within the reserve. Immerse yourself in the local culinary culture by participating in a coffee extraction class or pickling workshop before dining at Coyul, where the dishes created in partnership with Chef Elena Reygadas – recently named World’s Best Female Chef by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants – are nothing short of magical. Wash it all down with a Ponche con Pequette cocktail, a deconstructed version of a punch topped with coconut cream that’s inspired by Christmas posada celebrations. You can also take part in this festive Mexican tradition during the weekly posadas hosted at the Resort throughout December, enjoying warm snacks, basking in holiday cheer and breaking a piñata while surrounded by family and friends.

Sweet celebrations in Palm Beach

A 6-acre beachfront paradise just off south Florida’s central coast, Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach is an ideal setting for soaking up plenty of sun as well as holiday spirit. From elegant in-room menorahs and decorated Christmas trees to sugar cookies for Santa Claus, the on-site team here can arrange just about anything. It’s the restaurant, Florie’s, in partnership with Michelin-distinguished chef Mauro Colagreco, however, that’s at the heart of the action. A Christmas Day brunch, with an abundant seafood bar and festive confections by Pastry Chef Bashar Shamali, gives way to a New Year’s Eve fête, complete with champagne bar, canapés, live performances and a four-course dinner. Throughout the season, you can also expect surprises like poolside pop-ups serving up gelato, s’mores and smoothies. And since an unexpected piece of candy can always put a twinkle in the eye, the daily offerings at the lobby candy cart are guaranteed to make it a favourite.

These extravagant treats combine homemade graham cracker, marshmallow fluff and semi-sweet chocolate with a pourover of Valrhona Caraibe and Jivara milk chocolate. For something stronger, advance to Ascent Lounge for a Back Country Old-Fashioned or head to the igloo-style Fahrenheit Forty-Seven pop-up champagne bar for elevated slope-side sips.

VIEWFINDER PERFECTION

Enhance your vacation snaps, whether you’re capturing images with the latest DSLR or using your smartphone. Set out from Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero with award-winning photographer Adam Jacobs – whose subjects have included Nelson Mandela, former President Barack Obama and rock star Mick Jagger – for a private photography class with the city’s iconic landmarks as your muses. Shutterbugs of all skill levels will learn how to perfectly frame shots of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf and Union Square, or pick up tips on food photography or family portraits. After your photo tour of the city, return to the Hotel and review your photos with Jacobs, learning how to fine-tune and edit your own set of images.

Prefer to see the city on your own? The Through the Lens experience gives you the option of taking a self-guided tour at your own pace after an online session with Jacobs to discuss photography dos and don’ts. Then reconnect with Jacobs online to review your images in the comfort of the Hotel.

MORNING AT THE MARKET

One of the best ways to get a sense of place is by taste. In Tokyo, that means a trip to Tsukiji Outer Market, known as Japan’s “Food Town.” Rise early at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi and meet your guide – a local fourth-generation Edomae sushi chef – for an insider’s visit to the market, where you’ll browse the day’s freshest catches and local produce. Afterwards, enjoy a private meal at the chef’s century-old, family-owned restaurant to savour the flavours you discovered during your shopping trip.

For another taste of Tokyo, end your day with a traditional onsen bath in the Hotel’s Spa. Relax in the hot spring water as you sip herbal tea – and treat yourself with the addition of a massage, facial or body treatment.

PUPPY LOVE

What could be better than a day at the beach? A day at the beach paired with a welcoming nuzzle or the adoring gaze of puppy eyes. The newest team member at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach is Fort, an Australian Labradoodle puppy. As the Resort’s therapy dog, he’ll help you settle into your home away from home, greeting you at check-in or stopping at your cabana during his walk around the pool to have his ears scratched. Pulling double duty, he also visits local organizations like schools and hospitals to provide affection and comfort to humans in need.

After a day spent sailing the Intracoastal Waterway, browsing Palm Beach’s world-class boutiques or exploring the tropical landscape by bike, a cuddle session with your new furry friend is an ideal way to relax with loved ones.

CULTURAL IMMERSION

Find inspiration in Bangkok’s creative district, home to galleries, boutiques and the new Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River. Thanks to a partnership between the Hotel and the city’s Museum of Contemporary Art, you’ll enjoy a unique opportunity to experience Bangkok’s creative landscape, right at your front door: The innovative new ART Space gallery-style showcase extends from the Hotel’s tranquil arrival lobby to the riverfront promenade and features a rotating selection of Thai artists. Gather with friends, sip bespoke cocktails and wander through garden courtyards taking in the display.

There’s more to discover without going too far: Just steps from the Hotel lies historic Charoen Krung Road – the oldest thoroughfare in Bangkok. Dotted with historic landmarks like Buddhist and Chinese temples and 19th-century neoclassical buildings, the road leads to an abundance of spots to explore. Let the Hotel’s Concierge lead you on a behind-the-scenes tour of the small streets and alleys that make up the neighbourhood, from after-hours gallery tours to street food favourites.

ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS

You don’t need a full-blown safari experience to reap the benefits of spending time with nature. Escape from the bustle of the city with a short stay at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, deep in the heart of the world’s most celebrated wildlife reserves. Our favourite way to spend the day? Lounging on a sun bed by the free-form infinity pool, where you’re perfectly positioned to spot elephants when they gather at a nearby watering hole. For something a little more active, set off with a Maasai guide or a park ranger for a 90-minute walk and the chance to catch a glimpse of the Big Five – lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants and rhinoceros – and other wildlife at home in the Serengeti. Help install a “camera trap” to digitally record these fascinating animals on the move.

End your day with an uphill nature hike with a Maasai guide and a yogi to the Lodge’s sunset kopje, where captivating views help clear your mind during a meditation session that will leave you re-energized and ready to return to your daily life.

Jennifer Nelson, front office manager at Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, has been a Four Seasons team member for 22 years. Her dogs, Bernard, a Shih Tzu, and Charlie Ann, a rambunctious boxer, have reaped the benefits.

“They are some spoiled pups,” Nelson says. “Charlie and Bernard visited Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Vail, San Francisco, Scottsdale and Dallas. Your pups always have a cosy Four Seasons doggy bed awaiting them – and no, they do not need to share, they each get their own. If you order In-Room Dining, ask for the puppy menus, as most Four Seasons have a special menu just for your pups.

Four Seasons Hotel Megève

Guests at Four Seasons Hotel Megève can build a special relationship with dogs in the wilderness. “I find our dogsledding activity to be much more than just a riding experience: You get to see the herd from within, understand the hierarchy among those furry athletes, as they get ready to run,” says General Manager Stéphane Gras. “Then, sitting low and cuddling in the sled, the adrenaline keeps on increasing as the pace picks up; after a few seconds of adjustments, you just enjoy the beautiful white surroundings – do not get surprised if you start shouting with joy.

“At the end of the ride, you get to assist the expert musher as he checks on the herd and gets ready to feed them – sun gets down, a bit of yapping, the herd is getting ready to sleep in the middle of the birch grove.”

“When I look at our treats, I cannot help but think of Oliver, who visited us from New York City,” says Carolina Avaria, Chef Concierge and past president, Les Clefs d’Or Canada. “His human was so happy to know that while he was away on business, Oliver was more than comfortable and safe within his suite. Oliver loved his setup, especially his plush dog bed, treats, fresh water and, of course, belly rubs in the lobby. Every time I meet a four-legged VIP, our treats make us immediate best friends.” Guests Daniel and Julio Reyes says their dog, Canela, is just as excited to stay at Four Seasons Hotel Toronto as they are, thanks to the personalized pet attention. “From the thoughtful snacks to a dedicated area all to herself in the room, it’s truly a luxurious experience for us all,” they say. “It’s important to know that we can trust the Hotel to ensure that our little family feels pampered and taken care of in the best way possible.”

Dog sled mushes through snow

If you’ve had to leave your dog at home, Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail has you covered. “One of my favourite guest experiences is dogsledding with Winterhawk Dog Sled Adventures,” says General Manager Meredith Macfarlane. “This is an unbelievable experience. You have the opportunity to meet the Alaskan husky pack prior to the sledding adventure, and then you’re whisked through the forest and fully surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, with unbelievable views of Mount Elbert, Colorado’s tallest peak. Following the adventure, hot cocoa is served to the guests while the staff photographers share the images they captured.”

Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire, England

Guest Lauren Amiri lives in Europe and says it’s been a struggle to find pet-friendly luxury in the U.K. Then she discovered Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire. “It feels like a home away from home, and one of the most luxurious dog-friendly hotels we have experienced,” she says. “Upon arrival to our beautiful suite, we found Beignet had been left bowls, some bottled water, treats and a food sachet along with a sumptuous tartan and corded bed that he dived into immediately. We were able to take him for long, scenic walks and enjoy the library area for tea all together afterwards with him curled up on the rug and the staff going the extra mile to accommodate him. It’s also lovely to see the other guests enjoy having a dog around. So many people came up to us to pet him and enquire as to his breed.”

A New Season in Napa: Fall Fashion
Inspired by Wine Country

California’s Napa Valley is ideally suited for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes: The region offers a sunny, warm climate; good drainage; and volcanic soils that add an earthy, rich complexity to its wines. At the new Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley, where the vineyard is protected by the Palisades mountains and oak-covered hills, world-class winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown and his team at the on-site Elusa Winery have carefully designed and planted it to intensify the grapes’ flavour. Take part in the winemaking process, from harvesting grapes to blending and ageing the wine, or learn about Calistoga’s unique terroir during a tasting session – the Resort provides the most complete grape-to-glass experience in Napa.

“The moment guests step foot on the property, they are welcomed into an extraordinary wine country oasis,” says General Manager Mehdi Eftekari. “Awe-inspiring views of the vineyards and Palisades Mountains are an idyllic backdrop to enriching experiences at TRUSS Restaurant + Bar and Elusa Winery. In guests’ suites, the vines are mere inches from their terraces and balconies.”

The dramatic scenery of North America’s wine capital – and the Resort, set to open later this year – also provide an idyllic background for the season’s most stylish new fashions. The looks pair perfectly with the Resort’s natural colour palette, rich textures and easy elegance.

Elusa winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown is celebrated for his non-interventionalist approach, letting the vineyard’s character shine. It’s a style that has paid off: Renowned wine critic Robert Parker Jr. has awarded him 23 perfect 100-point scores for his Cabernet Sauvignon projects over the past decade.
