Weave through snow-covered pines on one of Vail’s 195 manicured trails.

A trail for everyone in Vail, Colorado

With nearly half of its 195 manicured trails gently winding between pine forests or down unhurried bowls, Vail has scenic runs for skiers of all skill levels. While less challenging descents are available for those looking for a gentle back-country experience, advanced skiers must tackle Vail’s infamous Back Bowls, or test their mettle on Vail’s longest run, the 4-mile-long (6.5-kilometre) Riva Ridge. Just take care at its steepest section, a particularly tricky area known as the “Tourist Trap.”

Right at the base of Vail Mountain, Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail is perfectly located to experience the best of the Colorado Rockies.

PERFECT FOR FAMILIES

Families should consider signing up for one of the many offerings at Vail’s ski and snowboard school. Opt for a Family Private Experience, during which you can each improve your skills and explore Vail together with the help of an expert instructor. Afterwards, take a family sleigh ride up Beaver Creek Mountain for a memorable dinner in a cozy log cabin.

FOR A SWEET APRÈS-SKI

In Vail, your après-ski is incomplete without a taste of The Remedy Bar’s famous Haut Chocolat. Arriving at your table in a traditional French hot chocolate pot, this high-level beverage is made with Valrhona chocolate and steamed milk – churned tableside – and poured into a cup topped with a dark chocolate lattice and homemade marshmallow.

When you’re staying at Four Seasons Hotel Megève, the area’s famous mountain scenery is on full display.

Timeless Alpine heritage in Megève

In 1920, Noémie de Rothschild, wife of Baron Maurice de Rothschild, fell in love with the traditional chalets, gentle slopes and brilliant Alpine sunshine of Megève. It’s here she decided to open her own ski resort, creating a ski lift, an airfield and an 18-hole golf course to attract celebrities and discerning travellers of her day. This tradition of elegance continues at Four Seasons Hotel Megève.

By the entrance of Four Seasons Hotel Megève, the La Cry ski lift provides direct access to the area’s famous Les Mandarines piste, making this the only ski-in, ski-out hotel in Megève. Aside from the slopes, Megève is just as famous for both its mountain scenery and its village charm. Put on your snowshoes and venture out on a hike at sunset accompanied by a professional mountain guide, or view the fresh snow through the beautiful pine tree forest from aboard the first electric snowmobiles in France, available exclusively at Four Seasons.

FOR FAMILIES

Take the family for a horse-drawn carriage ride along the village’s cobblestone streets, passing through the central square and various local boutiques. Available to guests at both Four Seasons properties, the Kids Club offers an enchanting setting for children ages 3 to 11. What with building snowmen, dog-sled rides, Japanese culinary delights and cocooning wellness treatments, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities designed to delight the youngest guests.

FOR COUPLES

Couples simply must enjoy a romantic meal at the Michelin-starred La Dame de Pic – Le 1920 at Four Seasons Hotel Megève. But for something even more exceptional, book A Night Above the Clouds, which includes a stay in an unforgettable suite set above the mountain restaurant L’Idéal 1850 and featuring unparalleled views of Mont Blanc. Once you’ve settled in, savour a delicious Savoyard dinner highlighting local cheeses, followed by stargazing on the suite’s majestic terrace to close out a magical winter’s night. The next day, relish a tailored breakfast while admiring the sunrise over Mont Blanc before being the first to hit the ski slopes.

WHAT TO PACK

Thoughtful touches – such as reef-friendly sunscreen stations near all three Resort pools and a complimentary rash guard provided with surf lessons – mean you can leave your well-stocked beach bag at home. Rooms at the Resort feature a hand-woven tote for you to keep, made by the Boruca tribe, one of eight indigenous communities in Costa Rica. Papagayo Explores also provides everything you need for exploring the landscape, including ponchos for occasional showers and binoculars to borrow. Forgot flip-flops for the kids, no athleisure for a quick workout, missing your strappy sandals? No problem. And if you decide to sign up for a last-minute tennis or pickleball match, the Resort offers complimentary tennis shoes for you to slip right into. Fly fishing, national park safaris and star gazing

The focus is on the ski resort in the winter, but in summer, Jackson Hole’s radius for exploration expands twofold. With Grand Teton National Park at its doorstep and the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park just 75 minutes away, newly renovated Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole is the perfect base for geothermal icons and wildlife safaris into the parks.

The concierge team can arrange full-day trips that draw near to features such as Old Faithful and the Fountain Paint Pots. A photographic safari in Grand Teton promises the perfect shots of the park’s bears and bison. And through a recently launched partnership with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris and Yellowstone Safari Company, guests have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage with the elusive Yellowstone grey wolf population.

Jackson Hole is also a magnet for fly fishers. The Resort’s expert in-house guides offer casting lessons for novices and float trips on the Snake River for experts. The Handle Bar, the Resort’s al fresco patio bar, is a great place to toast the sunset. Or the team can arrange a trip by luxury SUV to Grand Teton, where you can sip wine as the sun goes down, then use a state-of-the-art telescope to spot comets, double stars and planets in the night sky.

There are countless options for hiking and mountain biking, but for some real bragging rights, have the Concierge arrange an exploration of ice caves by helicopter. Vail’s Bavarian-inspired mountain village comes to life in the summer with a free concert series on Tuesday nights and music and dance festivals throughout the season. From Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail you can walk to the gondola and ride to the top of Vail Mountain to experience the new summer adventure park, Epic Discovery at Adventure Ridge. Activities such as zip lines, ropes courses and an alpine coaster rival the thrills of Vail’s famed Back Bowls.

Parents looking to blend education with adventure can head to Game Creek, where a guided aerial tour via zip lines and suspended bridges doubles as a lesson about the surrounding mountain ecosystem. Or take in views of the Sawatch Range and Castle Peak by horseback with the team at 4 Eagle Ranch, a working ranch on the valley floor. The concierge team can also put together an angler’s dream day, be it a wade or a float excursion casting for brookies and browns on trophy-class, Gold Medal–designated rivers.

A paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, the mountains around Four Seasons Hotel Megève are laced with scenic hiking trails. The concierge team can customize leisurely guided hikes that include a gourmet picnic enjoyed lakeside with views of Mont Blanc, or more strenuous treks that entail an overnight in a mountain hut.

In the summer months, the best way to explore the region’s charming villages is by bike. A network of mountain bike trails connects to nearby towns such as Sallanches, Combloux and Flumet. Golfers have priority access to one of the world’s oldest golf courses, the 18-hole Golf du Mont d’Arbois. If you’re more of a thrill seeker, try the unique sport of canyoning, which involves traversing canyons by rappelling, sliding and jumping into natural pools, or tandem paragliding, a favourite pastime of the region that promises unrivalled Alpine views.
