9 Ways to Maximize Your Micro-Vacation

Sometimes you need a month away in a destination halfway around the globe. Other times, a couple of days are enough to relax with friends and family or find a fresh perspective. Four Seasons can help fill out even a short time: See San Francisco through a new lens, play fetch in Palm Beach, soak in a hammam in Marrakech. Here, we share some of the best ways to make the most of your destination.

VIEWFINDER PERFECTION

Enhance your vacation snaps, whether you’re capturing images with the latest DSLR or using your smartphone. Set out from Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero with award-winning photographer Adam Jacobs – whose subjects have included Nelson Mandela, former President Barack Obama and rock star Mick Jagger – for a private photography class with the city’s iconic landmarks as your muses. Shutterbugs of all skill levels will learn how to perfectly frame shots of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf and Union Square, or pick up tips on food photography or family portraits. After your photo tour of the city, return to the Hotel and review your photos with Jacobs, learning how to fine-tune and edit your own set of images.

Prefer to see the city on your own? The Through the Lens experience gives you the option of taking a self-guided tour at your own pace after an online session with Jacobs to discuss photography dos and don’ts. Then reconnect with Jacobs online to review your images in the comfort of the Hotel.

MORNING AT THE MARKET

One of the best ways to get a sense of place is by taste. In Tokyo, that means a trip to Tsukiji Outer Market, known as Japan’s “Food Town.” Rise early at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi and meet your guide – a local fourth-generation Edomae sushi chef – for an insider’s visit to the market, where you’ll browse the day’s freshest catches and local produce. Afterwards, enjoy a private meal at the chef’s century-old, family-owned restaurant to savour the flavours you discovered during your shopping trip.

For another taste of Tokyo, end your day with a traditional onsen bath in the Hotel’s Spa. Relax in the hot spring water as you sip herbal tea – and treat yourself with the addition of a massage, facial or body treatment.

PUPPY LOVE

What could be better than a day at the beach? A day at the beach paired with a welcoming nuzzle or the adoring gaze of puppy eyes. The newest team member at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach is Fort, an Australian Labradoodle puppy. As the Resort’s therapy dog, he’ll help you settle into your home away from home, greeting you at check-in or stopping at your cabana during his walk around the pool to have his ears scratched. Pulling double duty, he also visits local organizations like schools and hospitals to provide affection and comfort to humans in need.

After a day spent sailing the Intracoastal Waterway, browsing Palm Beach’s world-class boutiques or exploring the tropical landscape by bike, a cuddle session with your new furry friend is an ideal way to relax with loved ones.

CULTURAL IMMERSION

Find inspiration in Bangkok’s creative district, home to galleries, boutiques and the new Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River. Thanks to a partnership between the Hotel and the city’s Museum of Contemporary Art, you’ll enjoy a unique opportunity to experience Bangkok’s creative landscape, right at your front door: The innovative new ART Space gallery-style showcase extends from the Hotel’s tranquil arrival lobby to the riverfront promenade and features a rotating selection of Thai artists. Gather with friends, sip bespoke cocktails and wander through garden courtyards taking in the display.

There’s more to discover without going too far: Just steps from the Hotel lies historic Charoen Krung Road – the oldest thoroughfare in Bangkok. Dotted with historic landmarks like Buddhist and Chinese temples and 19th-century neoclassical buildings, the road leads to an abundance of spots to explore. Let the Hotel’s Concierge lead you on a behind-the-scenes tour of the small streets and alleys that make up the neighbourhood, from after-hours gallery tours to street food favourites.

ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS

You don’t need a full-blown safari experience to reap the benefits of spending time with nature. Escape from the bustle of the city with a short stay at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, deep in the heart of the world’s most celebrated wildlife reserves. Our favourite way to spend the day? Lounging on a sun bed by the free-form infinity pool, where you’re perfectly positioned to spot elephants when they gather at a nearby watering hole. For something a little more active, set off with a Maasai guide or a park ranger for a 90-minute walk and the chance to catch a glimpse of the Big Five – lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants and rhinoceros – and other wildlife at home in the Serengeti. Help install a “camera trap” to digitally record these fascinating animals on the move.

End your day with an uphill nature hike with a Maasai guide and a yogi to the Lodge’s sunset kopje, where captivating views help clear your mind during a meditation session that will leave you re-energized and ready to return to your daily life.

SIP AND SAVOUR

Your wine-country getaway can begin and end at the new Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley, surrounded by acres of vineyards and framed by green forests and majestic mountains.

Nestled in the Calistoga American Viticultural Area, the Resort’s 7.4-acre organic vineyard specializes in Cabernet Sauvignon and has been carefully designed and planted to intensify the grapes’ flavour. Get hands-on experience in winemaking – help harvest the grapes, learn how to sort them and try your hand at blending wine – during a session with Resort winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, or join him for a tasting session, where he’ll describe Calistoga’s unique terroir and talk about the differences between floral and woody, balanced and rounded, and fruit-driven and terroir-driven wines. End your day with a meal at TRUSS Restaurant + Bar, featuring the best of Napa Valley cuisine, and or gather in your private villa with friends and loved ones and raise a glass to your time together.

TRADITIONAL WAY TO REFRESH

Hammam rituals have long been a part of Moroccan culture, adopted from Roman civilization in the seventh century and considered an important step in cleansing both body and mind. Steam away your stress with an authentic hammam experience at Four Seasons Resort Marrakech. After a deep steam in the Resort’s mosaic-tiled hammam, enjoy a full body exfoliation using traditional Moroccan black soap and a kessa glove, and a soothing body mask made from Atlas Mountains clay.

Refreshed and replenished, join a Resort specialist in the Spa garden to harvest herbs for a custom tisane. Sip your tea as you wander through the Resort’s 16 hectares of Moorish gardens and pools, or enjoy the mountain views from your private terrace. This private oasis is yours to explore.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

Perched high above the Ionian Sea, San Domenico Palace traces its origins to the 14th century, when it was established as a convent for Dominican nuns. Today, it’s home to the new San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel. With magnificent views of Mount Etna and the ancient Greek theatre, the Hotel is an iconic Sicilian landmark. Explore its rich history with an expert Four Seasons guide, who will point out original architectural details like traditional cloisters, choir stalls and restored frescos, plus an extensive array of paintings, sculptures, restored artefacts and relics on display in the Galleria.

Continue your historical journey beyond the Hotel: A guide will lead you to sites like the medieval village of Castiglione di Sicilia, Palazzo Corvaja and Piazza IX Aprile, where you’ll learn about the many cultures that have occupied Sicily over the centuries. Or make the Hotel’s Italian gardens, shaded by jasmine and hibiscus trees, yours for an afternoon of quiet contemplation or a romantic stroll.

World Class

During a recent trip, my sons gingerly made their way through the rice paddies at Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai as a guide pointed out the long grasses in the waters around their boots, the sounds of the resident buffalo in the distance carrying across the still air. As we walked, our guide explained how the animals and the farmers work together, and how much land is required to create a bag of rice we’d purchase without a thought at a supermarket back home. Later, we sampled the product: In a cooking class, the executive chef showed the boys how to make mango sticky rice and other tasty Thai dishes. We headed home with recipes, a new appreciation for a dinner staple, and knowledge of another culture and way of life.

Chi 1214 970x540

Our visit to Thailand was just one stop on our family’s trip around the world. Without class curricula, we let the journey school our sons. We learned new languages at playgrounds and restaurants, explored conservation efforts in wild spaces, tested our math skills while figuring out currencies, and practised reading with signs at museum exhibits.

Over the past year, terms like “remote schooling” have become a part of many families’ vocabularies. But for us and other avid family travellers, learning has always been a part of the adventure. Every trip we’ve taken has taught us, kids and adults, something new. As we look forward to future journeys together, here are some of the exciting opportunities offered by Four Seasons to help us learn about – and from – local destinations and people.

WILD OCEAN ENCOUNTERS

Who needs a biology classroom – or a playground – when your family can explore the incredible marine life that surrounds Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, México? As part of its “Schoolcations” program, marine learning activities for kids include an expert-guided whale-watching tour, a sea foraging excursion and the chance to assist with the release of olive ridley sea turtle hatchlings.

At Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, families (including kids as young as 9) can keep an eye out for sea turtles and other marine life – including migrating humpback whales, in season – during a private outrigger canoe paddle. Championship-level guides teach you the basics and show how this ancient tradition continues to play a role in Hawaiian culture.

In a new partnership with WiseOceans, and with a new Resort marine biologist and educator, Louise Sabadel, Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is now more certain than ever to appeal to conservationists of all ages. Snorkelling the calm lagoon and reef is an easy way for multiple generations to discover local underwater life together.

STAYING FIT AND FOCUSED

Healthy bodies and healthy minds go hand in hand, so learning a new skill that strengthens physical and mental muscles is good for the whole family. At Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, kids as young as 4 can learn the traditional art of Thai kick-boxing (muay thai) from a professional boxer. Every member of the family will enjoy gazing out over the gulf from a hilltop ring, practising this sport that promotes flexibility, strength and coordination.

On the flip side, sometimes it’s important to concentrate on quiet minds and calm spirits. At Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, kids age 6 and older can develop both. Board a dhoni boat together and sail over to the Island Spa, where children can relax with treatments all their own, including oil blending, nourishing seaweeds, or yoga on land or sea. “Kids are never too young to learn the importance of self-care or the role of nature in our well-being,” says Spa Assistant Manager Angelica De Leon. “Our children’s treatments all include an educational aspect.”

And it’s easy to turn a sport your child already loves into a teachable moment. At Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort, sign your student up for a one-hour golf lesson with PGA professional Rod Cook, the Resort’s Director of Instruction, to learn different golf skill sets like chipping, putting and driving. Afterwards, explore the science behind the sport: Director of Golf Maintenance Stephen Tucker will explain the winning formula of water, fertilizer and care that goes into keeping the course in prime condition.

ARTS, CRAFTS AND CULTURE

From a fairly young age, many kids have had some exposure to ancient Greek mythology and culture. In Athens, a visit to local museums will show them how important pottery remains are to the archaeological record and our modern understanding of the era. Bring the stories to life and engage kids’ hands-on creativity with pottery lessons at Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens.

Prefer your art in 2D? Learn about Italian artists and the techniques used in their work when you try your hand at reproducing pieces by legends like Raphael and Caravaggio. The exclusive collaboration between Four Seasons Hotel Milano and the Pinacoteca di Brera museum includes a sketchbook, colouring kit and private tour options. “The children who participate are captured by the colours, by the thousands of stories that the paintings tell,” says Pinacoteca di Brera Deputy Manager Alessandra Quarto. “They are totally fascinated; they sit on the floor and listen, observe, draw.”

Or make art that takes to the sky: At Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay and Four Seasons Resort Nevis, on-site kite experts will help kids build their own creations to soar high and challenge others. Kites play a cultural role in both destinations; spring brings kite competitions in Nevis, and summer in Bali is the time to watch locals battling it out in the skies with kites up to 5 metres wide.

Inspire any budding chefs in your family with a hands-on French culinary experience – starting with a drive to Versailles to see the Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, kitchen garden—with the Hotel’s Michelin-starred Chef Simone Zanoni. Or book a family lesson in Vietnamese cuisine at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An. The skills kids learn here from an expert chef, such as rolling rice paper, can add spice to mealtimes back home.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE

For kids, history books can be boring. Interactive activities bring the facts more vividly to life in experiences the adults can share. Pay a lantern-lit evening visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, exclusively arranged by Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC, where you’ll learn about the first U.S. president and explore spaces that aren’t open to the general public. “Mount Vernon looks like it was frozen in time during Washington’s life—it is truly living history,” says Concierge Supervisor Michael Chase. “No tour is duplicated from one family to the next; the guide tailors to the ages and curiosities of the children.”

At Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, a local expert will guide you on a walking tour along the Pearling Trail in the old city of Muharraq, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a glimpse into its history and its pearling traditions. Pair it with a family snorkelling or diving trip to search for fresh wild pearls.

If the legend of El Dorado has caught your children’s interest, a visit to Bogotá’s Museo del Oro is in order, and a helicopter tour over Lake Guatavita, arranged by Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogotá, can add a sense of place to the fabled city of gold. The lake was a sacred site for the indigenous Muisca civilization, where chiefs threw offerings including gold to the gods; the story grew into the myth of El Dorado.

For the ultimate adventure, the Four Seasons Private Jet may be just the ticket: The first family-friendly journey, African Wonders (December 28, 2021, to January 9, 2022), includes stops in seven countries and a visit to one of the world’s most compelling historical sites, Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza, with expert guides and special access. It’s just the type of experience to inspire your children’s love of learning, and your favourite family memories, for years to come.

CHERISH THE LAND IN MAUI

There are plenty of ways to embrace the spirit of aloha at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea: outrigger canoe tours, lei making, cultural tours, hula lessons. But at the heart of Hawaiian heritage is malama ‘aina – caring for and cherishing the land. To help protect its stretch of Wailea’s golden sand beach, the Resort has joined with the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Malama Hawaii program to offer Resort credits and a free night’s stay for guests who participate in a self-led beach clean-up. Pick up your supplies from the Concierge, then set out on a three-hour walk on the beach with family, collecting debris and learning how it affects marine life. It’s a great way to teach children to appreciate their surroundings.

TRACK ENDANGERED TURTLES IN NEVIS

From June to October, three species of sea turtle – the hawksbill, the leatherback and the green turtle – flock to Nevis to nest. All are endangered, and all need our help to protect their nests. For 15 years, Four Seasons Resort Nevis, West Indies has partnered with the Sea Turtle Conservancy to sponsor GPS satellite transmitters that help researchers track the turtles’ migration. Guests can get in on the action, too: The Resort’s annual Sea Turtle Conservation Weekend, held each July, includes night turtle-tracking walks, sea turtle–themed programs, and catch-tag-and-release events. After guests depart, they can go online and see where the turtles have travelled.

SUPPORT WILDLIFE IN SERENGETI

Elephants, lions, antelopes, exotic birds: Keep an eye out for them when you stay at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti. After all, the Lodge is located in one of the most magnificent wildlife habitats in the world. To protect that habitat, the Lodge supports a number of initiatives, including the Serengeti Lion Project – the world’s longest continuous field study of large mammals – and the Serengeti Cheetah Project, which identifies and maps the big cats. One project dear to the heart of Ahmed Attas, manager of the Lodge’s Discovery Centre: a partnership with the Frankfurt Zoological Society’s Rhino Conservation Project, which supports mobile anti-poaching units to help safeguard the critically endangered black rhino. Every Four Seasons–led game drive, walking tour and safari benefits these conservation programs.

LEARN ABOUT GIANT TURTLES IN SEYCHELLES

Through partnerships with the Island Conservation Society and WiseOceans, guests at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island can assist in beach clean-ups, native tree planting and snorkelling excursions led by marine educators. One of the most memorable ways to get involved in conservation efforts on the island is a visit to the Tortoise Sanctuary, just a bike ride from the Resort. The Aldabra giant tortoise as a species faces extinction, but here you can watch individuals as they feed on fruit and move slowly through their habitat. Sponsor a juvenile tortoise and learn fun facts about the beloved creatures – for example, the Aldabra giant tortoise drinks through its nose.

PROTECT CORAL REEFS IN MALDIVES

Few marine conservation programs have been as successful as the Reefscaper initiative launched by Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa and environmental consultancy company Seamarc in 2001. Initially an effort to help local reefs damaged by coral bleaching, the program today includes Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru and has deployed more than 500,000 pieces of 40 types of coral to help build up reefs and re-establish fish species like the citron goby. Guests can get involved at the Marine Discovery Centre: Help build coral frames, then dive into the lagoon to see them at work. Later, you can check in on the corals growing on your frame via the Marine Savers website.

STUDY SHARKS & BUTTERFLIES IN COSTA RICA

Take a two-day deep dive into the Pacific Ocean’s diverse ecosystems at Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo. On the first day of the Resort’s Conservation Land and Sea Extraordinary Experience, a private plane whisks you to the Golfo Dulce, a large marine area on the south Pacific coast. There, you’ll spend the day aboard a luxury yacht studying the habitat of hammerhead sharks with the marine biologists and conservationists behind the non-profit Misión Tiburón. On the second day, take a 35-minute flight along Guanacaste’s volcanic mountain range and touch down in Quebrada Grande at the lab Dr. Daniel Janzen, known as the “Darwin of Conservation.” Janzen and a team of parataxonomists and field-trained biodiversity specialists will assist guests as they collect caterpillars and test butterfly DNA.

Jennifer Nelson, front office manager at Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, has been a Four Seasons team member for 22 years. Her dogs, Bernard, a Shih Tzu, and Charlie Ann, a rambunctious boxer, have reaped the benefits.

“They are some spoiled pups,” Nelson says. “Charlie and Bernard visited Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Vail, San Francisco, Scottsdale and Dallas. Guests at Four Seasons Hotel Megève can build a special relationship with dogs in the wilderness. “I find our dogsledding activity to be much more than just a riding experience: You get to see the herd from within, understand the hierarchy among those furry athletes, as they get ready to run,” says General Manager Stéphane Gras. “Then, sitting low and cuddling in the sled, the adrenaline keeps on increasing as the pace picks up; after a few seconds of adjustments, you just enjoy the beautiful white surroundings – do not get surprised if you start shouting with joy.

“At the end of the ride, you get to assist the expert musher as he checks on the herd and gets ready to feed them – sun gets down, a bit of yapping, the herd is getting ready to sleep in the middle of the birch grove.”

“When I look at our treats, I cannot help but think of Oliver, who visited us from New York City,” says Carolina Avaria, Chef Concierge and past president, Les Clefs d’Or Canada. “His human was so happy to know that while he was away on business, Oliver was more than comfortable and safe within his suite. Oliver loved his setup, especially his plush dog bed, treats, fresh water and, of course, belly rubs in the lobby. Every time I meet a four-legged VIP, our treats make us immediate best friends.” Guests Daniel and Julio Reyes says their dog, Canela, is just as excited to stay at Four Seasons Hotel Toronto as they are, thanks to the personalized pet attention. “From the thoughtful snacks to a dedicated area all to herself in the room, it’s truly a luxurious experience for us all,” they say. “It’s important to know that we can trust the Hotel to ensure that our little family feels pampered and taken care of in the best way possible.”

Guest Lauren Amiri lives in Europe and says it’s been a struggle to find pet-friendly luxury in the U.K. Then she discovered Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire. “It feels like a home away from home, and one of the most luxurious dog-friendly hotels we have experienced,” she says. “Upon arrival to our beautiful suite, we found Beignet had been left bowls, some bottled water, treats and a food sachet along with a sumptuous tartan and corded bed that he dived into immediately. We were able to take him for long, scenic walks and enjoy the library area for tea all together afterwards with him curled up on the rug and the staff going the extra mile to accommodate him. It’s also lovely to see the other guests enjoy having a dog around. So many people came up to us to pet him and enquire as to his breed.”
