7 Ideas to Add to Your 2023 Travel Bucket List

Every traveller is different, and the reasons we travel are just as varied. But travel brings people together and strengthens relationships in a way that Zoom and FaceTime simply can’t. Whether you’re still daydreaming about where to visit or are about to enter the planning stages of your next big trip, one thing’s for certain: Sharing your bucket-list experiences with the people you love most will make them all the more memorable.

Maybe living the island life is calling your name this year for a relaxing family vacation. Or perhaps you’re thinking about where your next culinary escapade should be – like the one you and your friends had in Italy last summer. Either way, planning itineraries to suit a variety of needs is an art form Four Seasons has mastered. Here are seven destinations worthy of a spot on your short list, along with ideas for what to do when you get there that will make everyone in your group happy.

Punta Mita: Meet on the beach

A quiet fishing village in Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit, Punta Mita is famous for its tranquil coastline, snorkelling, dive sites, surfing and golf. At Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, the Concierge team can design group itineraries with the perfect mix of relaxation, culture and activity.

A prime Bahia de Banderas location makes chartering the Resort’s private yacht an ideal group excursion. The 17-metre (55-foot) ship is available for snorkelling charters to the protected Marietas Islands, seasonal whale watching and sunset sails. You can even take the yacht’s WaveRunner for a ride once the boat is anchored.

Back at the Resort, the private Las Manzanillas Beach offers an idyllic setting for an intimate family-style dinner served at a candlelit table in the sand. The low light leads to fantastic stargazing as ocean breezes rustle through the manzanilla trees. And once you’re ready to settle in for the night, you can take a moonlit stroll along the beach back to the five-bedroom Coral Beach House. With its completely private location directly on the sand, multiple terraces, personal media room, breezy layout and infinity-edge pool, this hacienda-style house is one of Punta Mita’s finest. You’ll have access to everything the Resort has to offer in addition to upgrades such as private full-time attendants, golf carts for getting around, and meals cooked by Four Seasons chefs in your own gourmet kitchen.

Vail: Gather in the great outdoors

A mountain resort is a great place to have fun boosting your adrenaline, whether it’s awash with snow or with wildflowers. And few do it better than Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail.

Between December and April, enjoy an epic snowmobile tour with your group in Vail Valley through outfitter Rocky Mountain Adventure Rentals. Great for beginner and intermediate riders, set out on a scenic groomed ride on a two-seat Trail Sled, or book a Powder Sled if you’re an advanced rider looking to carve your own path across the mountain’s steep and deep terrain. In summertime, white-water rafting is an exciting bonding experience, as groups work together to steer their raft safely over rapids.

Agreeing on where to eat can be a challenge for any large group, which is why pairing a restaurant with an adventure can appeal to the whole crowd. For an off-piste dining excursion, book a reservation at The 10th, an on-mountain restaurant located at MidVail atop Gondola One. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, The 10th offers updated classics in a modern alpine lodge. When the snow melts, groups can go on a one-hour horseback ride, led by an experienced wrangler, up to Beano’s Cabin. This log cabin is known for its farm-to-table fare with seasonal items ranging from a foie gras and black truffle tart to elk tomahawk.

After an adventure-packed day, the Resort’s Private Residences are ideal for relaxing together by the fireplace for warm evening chats or connecting over a meal on the outdoor terrace next to mountain views. Ranging from one to six bedrooms, these elegant alpine retreats offer plenty of space so you can all relax indoors after your great outdoor adventures.

Hampshire: Escape to the English countryside

Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire is a restored Georgian manor just an hour’s drive from London and 35 minutes from Heathrow Airport. Set on 500 acres of beautiful English countryside, this is where the hustle and bustle of daily life is happily traded in for a bit of quintessential English country living.

Running right through the estate grounds is the beautiful Basingstoke Canal, where you can hop aboard the Hotel’s private canal boat for an afternoon champagne and canapé picnic complete with a stop at a local pub. Adventurous groups can tackle the on-property highwire and zip-line courses, ride horses, or learn the art of falconry during a Hawk Walk. The latter involves accompanying a Harris’ hawk around the estate under the guidance of an expert falconer as you learn all about the majestic creature.

Come dinnertime, connect with each other and nature during a barbecue supper in the historic Walled Garden, which has beautiful gates, dovecotes and some much-valued privacy. Enjoy a dinner specially prepared by Four Seasons chefs and a spot of croquet in the nearby orchard.

Three wings of rooms and suites furnished with English countryside décor adjoin the 18th-century Georgian Manor House at the centre of the Hotel. Groups can work with the Concierge to choose a wing that suits them best. Large suites in the East, South and West wings provide sweeping views over the Estate’s grassy fields, and the spacious Royal Suite on the ground floor of the West Wing features a balcony for appreciating sunsets over the countryside. But history enthusiasts might prefer staying in the restored Manor House itself. Built in 1728, it has seen many lives, and was even used to billet Dutch and Polish airmen during World War II.

Hangzhou: Experience an ancient culture together

“A voyage on West Lake offers more refreshment and delectation than any other experience on earth,” declared Marco Polo when he visited Hangzhou in the 13th century. Checking in to the intimate Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake – a serene oasis set right on the fabled lake – lets you fully immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage and stunning beauty of this ancient city.

Bespoke group activities such as outdoor tai chi and guided birdwatching tours make the most of the Hotel’s magnificent gardens and lakeside location. Head off-property and go cycling together around West Lake, one of China’s best bike trails, or take a private tea plantation tour for quieter quality bonding time.

Planning your visit around a special milestone? Jin Sha restaurant’s 11 private dining rooms surround a picturesque garden lagoon and make for intimate settings to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions over Chef Wang Yong’s award-winning Zhejiang cuisine paired with wines suggested by the sommelier.

For a sanctuary within a sanctuary, the Hotel’s three-storey Jiang Nan–style Three-Bedroom Presidential Villa features its own entrance, a private landscaped garden, a grand indoor pool and plenty of space for everyone to spread out. If a big family reunion is on the calendar, you can also buy out the entire hotel (81 rooms) to enjoy dedicated attention by the whole Hotel staff.

Mauritius: Embrace island life

It may be small in size, but Mauritius brims with things to do. A year-round tropical climate makes it the perfect destination to enjoy beautiful beaches, water sports and golf at Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita.

One can’t miss activity: A sailing excursion to a secluded cove on Ile aux Cerfs, exclusively available to Four Seasons guests. Famous for its white-sand beaches and serene turquoise lagoon, this island is just a quick speedboat ride away from the Resort’s jetty. Once you arrive, beach attendants are on hand to help you find your perfect spot, while the Beach Bar and Grill serves up fresh-caught seafood brought in daily by local fishermen, shareable plates, local beers and refreshing cocktails and juices so you can play castaway all day long.

While we wouldn’t blame you for never wanting to leave the beach, the Resort’s Five-Bedroom Royal Residence Villa is quite the place to come home to. Set on a stunning peninsula with mesmerizing lagoon views, its infinity and plunge pools, full kitchen, and multiple communal areas make it the ultimate tropical oasis for comfort and seclusion.

Chiang Mai: Indulge your taste buds

Travel and trying new foods go hand in hand. And digging in to a destination’s local cuisine is one of the best (and most delicious) ways to experience its culture first hand. Nestled among fields of vibrant green rice paddies, Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai is not only a tranquil haven for reconnecting with family and friends, it’s also an excellent place to experience Thai cuisine.

At Rim Thai Kitchen – part restaurant, part cooking studio – you can learn the principles of Thai cuisine in a Thai teak house, then enjoy the fruits of your labour in the open-air pavilion overlooking a waterfall. Cooking class participants spend the morning investigating the Chef’s secret garden for ingredients and then return to the cooking school for a hands-on lesson in creating authentic Thai dishes.

Or leave it to the experts and let the Resort’s culinary team treat your group to a custom meal in the Orchid Nursery, a private dining space that mirrors the lush tropical landscape of Northern Thailand and sets an unforgettable stage for a private family brunch, afternoon tea or a themed reception amid a kaleidoscope of fragrant exotic orchids in bloom.

When you’ve had your fill, head back to you private residence to relax or spend some more quality time together. The Resort’s Private Residences offer spacious indoor-outdoor accommodations that families and groups of friends will love. Create lifelong memories with game night, yoga lessons on the pool deck, friendly cooking competitions, dinner, or a private performance for you and your group, all arranged by your full-time personal host.

Sharm El Sheikh: Seek adventure by the Red Sea

Looking to visit somewhere truly unique this year? Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh makes it possible to explore the dry, exotic landscapes of the Sinai Desert and the magnificent underwater world on the same day. In fact, the Red Sea resort is situated right next to the world’s warmest sea.

Be sure to pay a visit to the famous Ras Mohamed Protectorate, a naturally preserved dive site whose coral reefs are considered among the world’s best. Swim together alongside hawksbill turtles for an experience you’ll all bond over for years to come.

Then, at the end of the day, grab a seat beneath the stars for a private Bedouin-style feast on the Resort’s beach, complete with live entertainment, authentic Egyptian dishes and even a chance to take a nighttime camel ride along the shore.

Of the residential suites, the Four-Bedroom Villa offers the most space. Furnished in rich Middle Eastern style, that space includes a private pool, fully stocked kitchen and expansive terraces.

No Skis Required: Why the Off Season Is the Time to Visit a Ski Resort

Jackson Hole, Whistler, Vail and Megève are quintessential winter destinations celebrated for their world-class ski slopes. But locals know that when the snow melts, these mountain towns are just as enchanting – and don’t have peak season crowds. Hike, fish or golf with a backdrop of emerald pine forests and snow-capped peaks. Get that black-diamond ski run rush while navigating single-track mountain bike trails or Class IV whitewater rapids. Discover the surrounding wilderness on a wildlife safari in search of bears, bison and even wolves. With longer days, you’ll have twice as much time to explore. Here are some of the adventures Four Seasons can arrange for your next summer mountain escape.

Fly fishing, national park safaris and star gazing

The focus is on the ski resort in the winter, but in summer, Jackson Hole’s radius for exploration expands twofold. With Grand Teton National Park at its doorstep and the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park just 75 minutes away, newly renovated Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole is the perfect base for geothermal icons and wildlife safaris into the parks.

The concierge team can arrange full-day trips that draw near to features such as Old Faithful and the Fountain Paint Pots. A photographic safari in Grand Teton promises the perfect shots of the park’s bears and bison. And through a recently launched partnership with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris and Yellowstone Safari Company, guests have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage with the elusive Yellowstone grey wolf population.

Jackson Hole is also a magnet for fly fishers. The Resort’s expert in-house guides offer casting lessons for novices and float trips on the Snake River for experts. The Handle Bar, the Resort’s al fresco patio bar, is a great place to toast the sunset. Or the team can arrange a trip by luxury SUV to Grand Teton, where you can sip wine as the sun goes down, then use a state-of-the-art telescope to spot comets, double stars and planets in the night sky.

Bears, ice cave explorations and world-class golf

Whistler’s dramatic mountain backdrop and Canadian wilderness make even low-key activities like golf feel wild. Golf fanatics can play five internationally known courses through the Sea to Sky Highway. Three championship courses, surrounded by towering mountains, giant pines and sparkling glacier lakes, are just 10 minutes from Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler. Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains are also home to approximately 60 black bears and cubs. April to May and September to October are prime months for bear viewing. The concierge team can set up a guided 4×4 excursion led by naturalists and researchers to observe black bears and their cubs in Whistler Olympic Park.

There are countless options for hiking and mountain biking, but for some real bragging rights, have the Concierge arrange an exploration of ice caves by helicopter. The chopper will fly you to 10,000-year-old ice caves where a guide will lead you through a glowing blue world of natural ice chambers, sculptures and slides.

Ziplines, horseback riding and fly fishing

Vail’s Bavarian-inspired mountain village comes to life in the summer with a free concert series on Tuesday nights and music and dance festivals throughout the season. From Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail you can walk to the gondola and ride to the top of Vail Mountain to experience the new summer adventure park, Epic Discovery at Adventure Ridge. Activities such as zip lines, ropes courses and an alpine coaster rival the thrills of Vail’s famed Back Bowls.

Parents looking to blend education with adventure can head to Game Creek, where a guided aerial tour via zip lines and suspended bridges doubles as a lesson about the surrounding mountain ecosystem. Or take in views of the Sawatch Range and Castle Peak by horseback with the team at 4 Eagle Ranch, a working ranch on the valley floor. The concierge team can also put together an angler’s dream day, be it a wade or a float excursion casting for brookies and browns on trophy-class, Gold Medal–designated rivers.

Mountain biking, paragliding and canyoning

Europeans escape to the French Riviera in the summer months, which means their stunning mountain playgrounds in the Alps are crowd-free. A paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, the mountains around Four Seasons Hotel Megève are laced with scenic hiking trails. The concierge team can customize leisurely guided hikes that include a gourmet picnic enjoyed lakeside with views of Mont Blanc, or more strenuous treks that entail an overnight in a mountain hut.

In the summer months, the best way to explore the region’s charming villages is by bike. A network of mountain bike trails connects to nearby towns such as Sallanches, Combloux and Flumet. Golfers have priority access to one of the world’s oldest golf courses, the 18-hole Golf du Mont d’Arbois. If you’re more of a thrill seeker, try the unique sport of canyoning, which involves traversing canyons by rappelling, sliding and jumping into natural pools, or tandem paragliding, a favourite pastime of the region that promises unrivalled Alpine views.

An Overwater Aisle in the Maldives

With its mesmerizing lagoon and verdant jungle backdrop, the Maldives may cause you to forget what season it is, particularly when you behold the wedding venues at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. “I’m often asked what makes our Wedding Pavilion so unique,” says Restaurant Manager Mohamed Rasheed of the Resort’s overwater structure 50 metres (164 feet) from shore. “In my mind, it amplifies an already special day – from the approach via traditional dhoni and walking down a glass-bottom aisle, to claiming our UNESCO waters as your ‘something blue.’”

A woman in a straw hat sits with a black dog on the beach

Jennifer Nelson, front office manager at Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, has been a Four Seasons team member for 22 years. Her dogs, Bernard, a Shih Tzu, and Charlie Ann, a rambunctious boxer, have reaped the benefits.

“They are some spoiled pups,” Nelson says. “Charlie and Bernard visited Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Vail, San Francisco, Scottsdale and Dallas. Your pups always have a cosy Four Seasons doggy bed awaiting them – and no, they do not need to share, they each get their own. If you order In-Room Dining, ask for the puppy menus, as most Four Seasons have a special menu just for your pups.

“Nothing brings me more joy as the front office manager than when a guest checks in with their furry friends. You see the staff instantly light up. It is not just a convenience and luxury for the guest, it also brings the team instant smiles daily.”

If your pet can’t tag along on your trip, Four Seasons provides plenty of opportunities for you to meet and interact with other cuddly creatures during your stay.

Guests at Four Seasons Hotel Megève can build a special relationship with dogs in the wilderness. “I find our dogsledding activity to be much more than just a riding experience: You get to see the herd from within, understand the hierarchy among those furry athletes, as they get ready to run,” says General Manager Stéphane Gras. “Then, sitting low and cuddling in the sled, the adrenaline keeps on increasing as the pace picks up; after a few seconds of adjustments, you just enjoy the beautiful white surroundings – do not get surprised if you start shouting with joy.

“At the end of the ride, you get to assist the expert musher as he checks on the herd and gets ready to feed them – sun gets down, a bit of yapping, the herd is getting ready to sleep in the middle of the birch grove.”

“When I look at our treats, I cannot help but think of Oliver, who visited us from New York City,” says Carolina Avaria, Chef Concierge and past president, Les Clefs d’Or Canada. “His human was so happy to know that while he was away on business, Oliver was more than comfortable and safe within his suite. Oliver loved his setup, especially his plush dog bed, treats, fresh water and, of course, belly rubs in the lobby. Every time I meet a four-legged VIP, our treats make us immediate best friends.” Guests Daniel and Julio Reyes says their dog, Canela, is just as excited to stay at Four Seasons Hotel Toronto as they are, thanks to the personalized pet attention. “From the thoughtful snacks to a dedicated area all to herself in the room, it’s truly a luxurious experience for us all,” they say. “It’s important to know that we can trust the Hotel to ensure that our little family feels pampered and taken care of in the best way possible.”

If you’ve had to leave your dog at home, Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail has you covered. “One of my favourite guest experiences is dogsledding with Winterhawk Dog Sled Adventures,” says General Manager Meredith Macfarlane. “This is an unbelievable experience. You have the opportunity to meet the Alaskan husky pack prior to the sledding adventure, and then you’re whisked through the forest and fully surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, with unbelievable views of Mount Elbert, Colorado’s tallest peak. Following the adventure, hot cocoa is served to the guests while the staff photographers share the images they captured.”

Guest Lauren Amiri lives in Europe and says it’s been a struggle to find pet-friendly luxury in the U.K. Then she discovered Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire. “It feels like a home away from home, and one of the most luxurious dog-friendly hotels we have experienced,” she says. “Upon arrival to our beautiful suite, we found Beignet had been left bowls, some bottled water, treats and a food sachet along with a sumptuous tartan and corded bed that he dived into immediately. We were able to take him for long, scenic walks and enjoy the library area for tea all together afterwards with him curled up on the rug and the staff going the extra mile to accommodate him. It’s also lovely to see the other guests enjoy having a dog around. So many people came up to us to pet him and enquire as to his breed.”
