NordicTrack’s Ultra 1 Reformer Is the Secret to Building Strength and Supporting Mobility

There is something remarkable about Pilates: more than 100 years after Joseph Pilates developed his method, the fundamentals remain remarkably unchanged. Precise movement. Control. Breath. Awareness of the body.

What has changed is our understanding of why those things matter.

Today, Pilates has moved far beyond the studio. It has become part of a broader approach to wellbeing—one that values strength and mobility alongside recovery, balance, longevity and simply feeling good in your body. It can complement almost any form of movement, from running and cycling to golf and tennis, while helping you build the foundations to move well for years to come.

“I’ve been teaching Pilates for more than 20 years, and what’s fascinating is that the philosophy hasn’t really changed,” says Yvette McGaffin, Director of Pilates at iFIT and founder of Reform RX. “What has changed is the way we think about health. We’re increasingly interested in longevity, mobility, recovery and how we want our bodies to feel not just today, but 10, 20, or 30 years from now.”

That evolution is part of what makes Pilates so relevant now—and it is also changing where and how we practice it.

The new NordicTrack Ultra 1 Reformer channels the experience of a Pilates studio into a beautifully designed piece of equipment, combining the physicality of the reformer with immersive instruction and intuitive technology. Its 24-inch rotating HD touchscreen gives you access to iFIT Pilates classes across different levels and styles, allowing the practice to evolve with you rather than asking you to fit your body into a particular kind of workout.

“We weren’t trying to make a smaller studio Reformer,” says McGaffin. “We were thinking about how to recreate the experience of a great Pilates studio—the equipment, the instruction, the progression, and the feeling of being guided through a practice.”

The iFit touchscreen on the NordicTrack Ultra 1 Reformer

That sense of ease is important. The Ultra 1 is designed to make the reformer feel intuitive from the first session, with no exposed springs and resistance adjusted at the push of a button. Spring engagement and footbar position are visible as part of the experience, helping remove some of the unfamiliarity that can make a reformer feel intimidating when you first encounter one.

For McGaffin, good design is ultimately about removing friction between people and movement.

“The goal was to remove friction,” she says. “If something is difficult to understand or takes too much effort to set up, you’ve created a barrier before you’ve even started. We wanted the experience to feel intuitive, beautiful and easy to return to.”

The NordicTrack Ultra 1 Reformer

And perhaps that is where the future of Pilates lies: not in making the practice more complicated, but in making it easier to access and sustain.

A reformer at home can create continuity in your routine. So can a Pilates class at a hotel when you travel, or a session between meetings when your day is full. The setting can change; the fundamentals don’t have to.

“Pilates has been part of my life for more than 20 years, and I still find something new in it,” says McGaffin. “That’s the beauty of the practice. It can challenge you, build incredible strength and control, support recovery and mobility, or give a professional athlete that extra one percent difference in balance, stability, power, and body awareness that can change performance. And then it can be the thing you come back to for the next 20 or 30 years because it continues to evolve with you.”

“That’s why I’m so passionate about Pilates. It’s not just a workout or something you do to stay in shape. It’s a way of understanding your body and giving it the tools to perform, recover, and keep moving well throughout your life.”

The NordicTrack Ultra 1: Where Performance Meets Elegance

NordicTrack’s sleek Ultra 1 treadmill is not your cookie-cutter exercise machine: it’s a chic statement piece, designed to complement the most stylish of homes, that turns your workout into a luxurious and immersive experience.

The Ultra 1 is the culmination of 50 years of fitness innovation and design. Every element—from real wood finishes and cockpit-inspired metal controls to a 24-inch HD touchscreen and state-of-the-art software—was designed with modern style and the latest functionality in mind. The experience starts the moment you step onto the deck, with ambient lighting that illuminates the machine as you train. No wonder the Ultra 1 was named one of Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2025.

The Ultra 1 is available in two styles: dark walnut with black finish and light maple with bronze finish (pictured).

Once your workout begins, sleek, V-shaped railings outfitted in premium wood and metal and embedded with strategically placed fans offer head-to-toe air flow and mimic the feel of a refreshing outdoor run. Eight surround-sound speakers deliver ambient audio that puts you right in the virtual environment of your workout, whether it’s a sprint down the streets of Paris or a run in the trails of Patagonia.

The powerful brushless motor stays quiet at maximum speed.

With a speed capability of 15 mph and an incline range of –3 to 15 percent, the Ultra 1 is designed to provide full treadmill capabilities. Commercial-grade Progressive Reflex cushioning absorbs up to 52 percent of impact to protect your joints, and the decoupled deck design reduces vibrations for a smoother run. If you’re targeting a heart rate zone, simply connect your Bluetooth heart rate monitor or wearable, and the Ultra 1’s ActivePulse feature will modulate the workout intensity to keep you in your desired training zone.

The first-in-class treadmill comes with a free one-month membership to iFIT Pro, with access to an expansive library of more than 10,000 trainer-led video workouts from around the world, including a HIIT class set among the stunning red rocks of Sedona, a 10K training series in the Balkans, and a hike to Mt. Everest base camp. Strength training, Pilates, yoga and other studio offerings are also available on the platform. Another premium perk: You’ll be able to enlist iFIT’s new AI Coach, a virtual personal trainer that creates customized training regimens based on your individual goals.

User-friendly cockpit-inspired controls give the Ultra 1 a premium look and feel.

The Ultra 1 is the next level of smart fitness, providing a new, luxurious way to experience immersive workouts. Whether the goal is peak performance, cardio conditioning, or weight loss, you’ll feel pampered by the Ultra 1—even when you’re feeling the burn.

Find Your Centre: Wellness Trips to Take This Year

Sometimes, a day at the spa is all you need to recharge. Other times, you have to go a little deeper. Creating the kind of space – mentally, physically, emotionally – that allows you to look inward and gain clarity is best done when you’re in an environment that caters to it. Expert-led and fully customizable, the immersive wellness experiences here invite you to disconnect from the world and focus on one thing: yourself. Healing with crystal singing bowls in coastal Vietnam, cycling through Florence – there’s a place and a plan for every vision of revitalization. The beauty of exploring wellness with Four Seasons is that all you have to do is find the place that speaks to you and let the experts do the rest.

Let nature move you in Lanai

Known as the last of Hawaii’s wild islands, Lanai is a crowdless, verdant paradise rising from the Pacific. Here, Four Seasons Resort Lanai hugs aquamarine Hulopoe Bay, a marine preserve bound by powdery white sand. Nearly all rooms have private lanais looking out on the ocean or tropical gardens. Bordered by native greenery, a lagoon-style free-form pool overlooks the ocean.

Taking full advantage of its spectacular surroundings, the Resort’s 1,100-square-foot (102-square-metre) Yoga Studio features some of the best views on the island. Classes in meditation, sound healing, reiki and yoga for any level can also be held right on the beach, allowing you to sink into the soothing back-and-forth rhythm of the ocean waves. The Resort also boasts Manele Golf Course – a links that designer Jack Nicklaus considers one of his finest – as well as clay tennis courts and a ranch offering scenic horseback rides through the hills of Koele.

Prefer an adults-only, all-inclusive wellness experience? You may want to book a stay nearby at Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort – the first of its kind in the Four Seasons portfolio. Here, your personal journey to supreme health begins when you meet with a Sensei Guide to optimize your stay, whether you plan to end your vacation slimmer, more relaxed or both. The Hotel’s food scene alone is worth the trip, with menus devised by star chef Nobu Matsuhisa and a team of expert nutritionists.

Connect with nature in Lanai

Find your fitness flow in Florence

Two exquisitely restored former residences built more than 500 years ago make up the elegant Four Seasons Hotel Firenze. Its Renaissance-era elegance and 17th-century frescoes easily transport guests to another era.

“Our property is really the best place to reconnect with nature, relax and detox from a stressful everyday life,” says Spa Director Lucia Papalini. “In our 11-acre garden – the biggest private garden in town – guests are able to take personal fitness classes, training in a historical and amazing green space. They also particularly love meditation classes that can be done overlooking the Duomo.”

Find your place in the garden for a guided session focused on meditation, breathing and strengthening, or join a FLEX 30 class to limber up with static and dynamic stretching.

“People can also follow the running paths in the garden, or rent one of our customized bicycles to explore the city on two wheels,” Papalini says, “before ending the day with a Michelin-starred dinner prepared with the freshest vegetables coming from local producers.” The Hotel’s three restaurants – including the Michelin-starred Il Palagio, where choices are crafted using the best seasonal ingredients – turn out healthy, balanced meals to keep you properly fuelled.

Recovery and rejuvenation also come in the form of toning massages, iridescent mud therapy and body illumination treatments. Inside the glassy two-storey Spa, find further revitalization in the soothing steam bath. Afterwards, wander the regal 11-acre (4.5-hectare) Giardino della Gherardesca, a study in perfectly placed statues, fountains and flora, some planted centuries ago. You’ll feel like an Italian aristocrat – and, by the end of your stay, a particularly fit one.

Learn the art of meditation in Vietnam

Situated on an immaculate stretch of Vietnam’s central coast, with three infinity pools cascading in stair-steps to the sea, Four Seasons Resort Hoi An (The Nam Hai) is a sanctuary for the spirit. Support, compassion and acceptance are the guiding principles of the Resort’s holistic Heart of the Earth Spa, which follows the teachings of revered Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. “The Heart of the Earth Spa is a serene environment where our therapists create a very special space,” says Spa Manager Dwi Susanti.

Classes and treatments are designed to help you stop, listen, examine the harmony of your surroundings and reach the musings of the inner self. You can practise yoga, meditation and mindful breathing in intro-level classes or go further with sound and breath exercises and reiki. A palm-shrouded yoga pavilion offers aerial yoga: Cradled in a soft hammock, you’ll stretch and soar into body-opening postures.

For the ultimate self-awareness moment, don’t miss the intimate Goodnight Kiss to the Earth ceremony. This ritual occurs each evening by the water, and invites you to send a traditional Vietnamese wishing lantern out onto the moonlit lagoon while listening to the meditative hum of the crystal singing bowls.

Swim, bike and trek like an Ironman in Kona

Whether you’re a budding triathlete or an elite competitor, there’s one man who can help you get better — six-time Ironman world champion Dave Scott, who is leading five-day clinics at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. In this brand-new triathlon training program, running from June 20–24 and December 5–9, you can smooth your swimming style, get faster at transitions, become more efficient on the bike, and run across the finish line in less time than ever.

I want to help drive athletes, and share the reasons why you can become better. – Dave Scott

“It’s very interactive — I’m not showing them how many muscles I have, but instead how to minimize their time and maximize their workouts.” Scott designed each day’s training session based on his own lessons learned, not only in swimming, biking and running, but also in nutrition, flexibility and injury prevention. “A lot of people think more is better, and I was my own worst enemy in my heyday of racing,” admits Scott, who now offers a more balanced approach to students. “Do what you can do at the moment. Be present. Be mindful. It adds calmness and it adds clarity.”

Master Thailand’s ancient form of fighting

Athletes who commit to mastering Muay Thai – the centuries-old practice of fighting with eight points of contact – will emerge stronger both physically and mentally. They’ll also gain a new appreciation for Thai massage.

Surrounded by breezy palm trees in the Bill Bensley–designed training ring on the Gulf of Thailand, guests participating in the full-day Muay Thai Adventure at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui begin with lessons from a Muay Thai pro in the seaside ring. Together, students and the master focus on the fist, forearm, knee and shin strikes that earned for this form of kick-boxing the name “the Art of Eight Limbs.” At the Resort’s spa, the recovery is all-out, too: an herbal steam, cool-water leg massage, and full-body massage with essential oils of cloves, ylang-ylang and black pepper.
