Why Your Next Great Adventure Is on the Water

Why spend your entire vacation experience on solid ground? Four Seasons resorts around the world are extending their unparalleled hospitality with luxury dive boat charters. Whether it’s snorkelling or sunbathing you’re after, or both, we’ve compiled the ways you can change your perspective on paradise.

Koh Samui yacht

Thailand’s Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park is home to 42 uninhabited islands ripe for exploration.

Koh Samui, Thailand

On Samui Island, guests at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui can extend their range with its two yachts. The Minor Affair, a 19.5-metre (64-foot) Sunseeker yacht, accommodates up to 12, with two cabins and a master suite. Its hydraulic swimming platform has a built-in shower, and a Bose sound system is ready to supply your sailing soundtrack.

The Resort’s 12.8-metre (42-foot) charter, the Siam Seas Explorer, has an outdoor deck where you can lie still in the sun. It also happens to be an island-hopping speedboat that can reach up to 44 knots (about 50 mph). The crew – a personal assistant and a deckhand – can provide picnics, full meals and, of course, champagne.

Trips aboard each yacht are fully customizable, but the Resort suggests several itineraries, such as a jaunt to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park – 42 uninhabited islands great for snorkelling, with a chance to dive through a cave to the saltwater Emerald Lake. The yachts also offer sunset cruises and tours around Koh Samui or to Thailand’s southernmost island, Koh Phangan, where every month up to 30,000 people flock to dance at its Full Moon Party.

“Our guests really enjoy the yacht trips to the Ang Thong marine park – it is a beautiful destination with a nice trek and secluded beach,” says Sean Mosher, General Manager of the Resort. “What’s equally impressive is the experienced and knowledgeable crew, especially our captain.”

Explore Lanai’s southern coastline aboard Lanai II, the Resort’s sloop-rigged sailing catamaran.

Lanai, Hawaii

When guests at Four Seasons Resort Lanai board Lanai II, a 65-foot (20-metre) sloop-rigged sailing catamaran, they’ll experience the pristine waters surrounding Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island in complete luxury. Set off for a three-hour snorkel sail to Kaunolu on the southern shore. This heritage site was King Kamehameha’s summer retreat, and the waters were a favourite fishing spot of his royal entourage. Swim along coastal reefs teeming with brilliantly coloured fish and wildlife – and perhaps catch a glimpse of humpback whales that frequent the waters seasonally, from December to mid-April. Snorkel gear, wetsuits and stand-up paddleboards are all provided, as is a picnic lunch on board before heading back to shore.

For an unforgettable evening, take Lanai II out for a two-hour sunset cruise to sip cocktails as the sun falls below the horizon, enjoy delicious pupus (appetizers) and watch schools of spinner dolphins frolic in the surf. Guests can also book a private charter on Lanai I, the Resort’s 50-foot (15-metre) sailing catamaran, to snorkel, scuba-dive, fish, whale-watch, or just relax and take in views of the beautiful Lanai coastline.

“An ocean adventure is one of the best ways to explore the southern coastline of Lanai,” says Captain Kamalani Ranis of Lanai Ocean Sports. “Just minutes from the harbour are some of the best dive sites in the world, resident spinner dolphins and some of the highest sea cliffs in the world. All experiences with our Lanai-based crew are unique.”

A private boat makes its way around the coast of Bora Bora

The Resort’s Andreyale Bateaux Taxis were modelled after 1920s New York City commuter boats.

Bora Bora, South Pacific

At Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, up to 20 people can embark on two-hour excursions aboard a custom-built, 11.8-metre (39-foot) Andreyale Bateaux Taxi. The taxi boats – Heinoanoa, Leana, Poeiti and Vaihani – were inspired by New York City commuter boats that, in the 1920s, transported Wall Street executives from Long Island to New York’s Financial District. But the 21st-century models are made with mahogany, teak and stainless steel, and they stick to the South Pacific.

The Andreyales serve as transfers between the Resort and Bora Bora Airport, and are also available for private charters to take guests snorkelling with rays and sharks, deep-sea fishing, or touring the area with a local guide. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora has its own fleet for one-hour to full-day excursions. The latter choice is easily the most popular.

“A private Sunset Sushi and Champagne Cruise is an incredibly romantic experience,” says Romain Chanet, General Manager of the Resort. “Not only do you get to see the beautiful colours of Bora Bora’s lagoon and sky change with the sunset, but you get to do so with your loved one while enjoying the perfect pairing of fresh sushi and champagne. It’s truly one of Bora Bora’s most memorable experiences.”

Traditional muay Thai boxing involves nearly the entire body – known as the “art of eight limbs,” it uses eight main parts of the body. Two hands, two legs, two elbows, two knees. Unleash your inner warrior with a session with an expert at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, where you’ll learn the basic moves of this ancient combat art. It’s also a great workout, increasing your heart rate and releasing stress. The five-night program begins with a health consultation with physiologists, nutritionists and mindfulness coaches to provide personalised insight into how you can improve your game. Over the course of the program, a WHOOP wearable device will track your performance metrics with detailed video analysis and instruction.

“The opportunity to work with guests on their golf game really gives us a chance to dive deep through an honest assessment of what their game currently is, what their goals are and how we can get them to that point,” says Coach Scott Ashworth, PGA, Director of Golf. “By working with the practitioners at Sensei and sing technology such as the WHOOP Band, we gain a better understanding of focus areas for well-being to integrate with golf instruction and maximize guest’s enjoyment and potential.”

Swim, bike and trek like an Ironman in Kona

Whether you’re a budding triathlete or an elite competitor, there’s one man who can help you get better — six-time Ironman world champion Dave Scott, who is leading five-day clinics at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. In this brand-new triathlon training program, running from June 20–24 and December 5–9, you can smooth your swimming style, get faster at transitions, become more efficient on the bike, and run across the finish line in less time than ever.

I want to help drive athletes, and share the reasons why you can become better. – Dave Scott

“It’s very interactive — I’m not showing them how many muscles I have, but instead how to minimize their time and maximize their workouts.” Scott designed each day’s training session based on his own lessons learned, not only in swimming, biking and running, but also in nutrition, flexibility and injury prevention. “A lot of people think more is better, and I was my own worst enemy in my heyday of racing,” admits Scott, who now offers a more balanced approach to students. “Do what you can do at the moment. Be present. Be mindful. It adds calmness and it adds clarity.”

Master Thailand’s ancient form of fighting

Athletes who commit to mastering Muay Thai – the centuries-old practice of fighting with eight points of contact – will emerge stronger both physically and mentally. They’ll also gain a new appreciation for Thai massage.

Surrounded by breezy palm trees in the Bill Bensley–designed training ring on the Gulf of Thailand, guests participating in the full-day Muay Thai Adventure at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui begin with lessons from a Muay Thai pro in the seaside ring. Together, students and the master focus on the fist, forearm, knee and shin strikes that earned for this form of kick-boxing the name “the Art of Eight Limbs.” At the Resort’s spa, the recovery is all-out, too: an herbal steam, cool-water leg massage, and full-body massage with essential oils of cloves, ylang-ylang and black pepper.

Freedive in the French Riviera

Using breathwork to become a world-class athlete may not sound conventional, until you talk technique with a champion freediver. Learn their tips and tricks as part of the new Mindfulness and Wellbeing Program at Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel.

Led by freediving world champions Arthur Guérin-Boeri and Thomas Bouchard, the workshop takes a holistic view of health, based on the key pillars of exercise, relaxation, nature and wholesome food. Work on your asana and qigong under the Mediterranean sun, then head to the spa for a custom skin analysis and treatment session.

“Breathing, and even holding your breath, is a powerful and accessible way to balance your body and mind,” says Guérin-Boeri. “The connection with water makes the link even stronger. The program is open to everyone who wants to discover a unique relaxation experience, coming straight from our world-ranking expertise.”

A Helicopter Over Volcanoes in Oahu

In Hawaii, the two of you can strengthen your bond by sharing the Earth, Wind & Fire helicopter tour offered by Four Seasons Resort O‘ahu at Ko Olina. Prepare for sensory abundance as you and your loved one fly past the verdant cliffs of Molokai, the green – yes, green – sand beaches of Papakolea, the Hamakua Coast’s misty waterfalls and even active volcanoes. “Each of the Hawaiian islands is so different from the next, so beautiful in its own way,” says Concierge Manager Ricarda Schellenberg. “This experience delivers all of the magical landscapes Hawaii has to offer.”

A high point of the journey takes place on the ground. “When you land at the Hawaii Legacy Forest on Big Island, you walk through waist-high grass and get your hands into the rich black volcanic soil to replant a native koa tree, giving back to the ‘aina,” caring for the land, Schellenberg says. “Afterwards, the awe of seeing the landscape from above becomes very real.” You’ll return to the Resort in time for a glass of Champagne at sunset.

A Private, Starlit Spa in Nevis

What could be better than stargazing together? Stargazing from a private volcanic-stone jetted tub in the heart of the Caribbean. The Spa Under the Stars experience at Four Seasons Resort Nevis transforms the Spa into an exclusive sanctuary for serenity and romance. You’ll have the entire space to yourselves – including a Japanese–inspired cold plunge pool and Spa Deck, surrounded by the privacy of a tropical garden. Your Nevisian massage begins with a foot bath in warm coconut milk infused with lemongrass, followed by a massage using a locally infused blend of oils inspired by the exotic scents and spices of the West Indies. End your evening with a candlelit dinner for two on the sala deck, overlooking Nevis Peak.

“Spa Under the Stars is inherently romantic, but I love when a guest goes the extra mile to make it a surprise for their partner,” says Spa Specialist Kevin Raymond. “And if you happen to be here during a full moon night, there’s just nothing like it.” Couples should also make sure to tour the ruins of the Hamilton Estate, a former sugar plantation once owned by the family of Nevis-born U.S. founding father Alexander Hamilton – as in Broadway’s hit show Hamilton.

The special quality of a candlelit meal is amplified when it’s served on a white sand beach illuminated by the moon. Four Seasons Resort Seychelles arranges that very dinner on Petite Anse Beach, ringed by flourishing coral reefs. If you can take your eyes off each other, you might spot fruit bats (they’re vegan) flying high overhead and hermit crabs meandering along the shore.

“Arrive around 6:30 pm, just in time for sunset and a glass of Champagne,” says Executive Chef Apostolos Dimou, who’s careful to note that the sun drops directly in front of the bay. “We can also work with couples to develop their own perfect menu, so the experience becomes even more personal.” The sky is the limit when it comes to the menu: savour local flavours, or really impress your partner by recreating dishes from your first dinner date.

If your definition of a dream date includes a touch of Indiana Jones, look no further than Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogotá. Taking the Hotel’s Sierra Nevada day trip, you’ll board a private jet for the village of Santa Marta some 45 minutes away, and then hop on a helicopter to soar over Colombia’s lush Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains, where the indigenous Kogi community has lived for centuries. Explore the thatch-roofed Mulkuakungui Village and connect with Kogi locals, learning rituals and receiving a handwoven piqué backpack. Lovebirds can keep an eye out for blue-bearded helmet crests, one of the 28 avian species that occupy only this region. (Colombia has the most diverse bird population worldwide.) As you fly out, take note of the circular terraces of Ciudad Perdida, or Lost City, which the Kogi built in AD 800.
