The Family Trips You’ll Be Talking About for Years

When you’re travelling with your brood, you’ll need to know about top-notch activities those of all ages can enjoy. These five Four Seasons properties go above and beyond to make young guests and their parents feel like VIPs, whether exploring under-the-radar theme parks in Orlando, Florida, or taking a secret tour of the Crown Jewels in London.

Watch fireworks in Orlando, Florida

It’s no surprise that Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort, located in one of the earth’s top destinations for families, is chock-a-block with child-friendly activities. Guests will find a 5-acre waterpark with a lazy river (complete with two curving water slides); sand volleyball and a rock-climbing wall; and Disney character breakfasts, to name a few. Parents can opt to send their little ones to the supervised Kids For All Seasons program so as to spend a few hours at the adults-only pool, and then pick them up for the nightly fireworks – best seen from the rooftop of Capa restaurant (or Park View guest rooms).

And there’s plenty more to see in town. “I-Drive 360, where the new Orlando Eye is located, has great family activities, including Madame Tussauds wax museum and the Sea Life Aquarium,” says concierge team member Alex Lum. “Just a few minutes away from our Resort, guests can experience the magic of the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World. The Disney theme parks each feature special new activations and entertainment for the celebration. Plus, the complimentary shuttle from our Resort makes it an easy trip.”

Go behind the scenes in London

Home of both Mary Poppins and Harry Potter, London is a children’s favourite by association. Parents choose Four Seasons Hotel London at Tower Bridge for its over-the-top children’s amenities – such as miniature dressing gowns, slippers and teddy bears in the rooms – not to mention a perk that’s all too rare in England: a 14-metre pool open to all ages, with adult supervision.

Once you’ve been to “The Making of Harry Potter” to see the sets created for the wildly popular films, Assistant Head Concierge William Sloan recommends that you ask him to arrange a secret tour of a more historic British attraction: The Tower of London. For centuries, only the British monarchy and their close affiliates have had access to the Crown Jewels there: 23,578 gemstones on site, unless they’re in use. “You’ll see places that haven’t been available to the public before,” Sloan says, “and we can even arrange for a Yeoman Warder to meet guests and show traitors to the gate.”

Another fun option, especially for young scallywags: the National Maritime Museum. “Just a two-minute walk from the Hotel to Tower Pier, guests can hop on one of the Thames River Boats and head to explore life on the sea,” Sloan says. Don’t miss the Cutty Sark, where you can “steer” the 1869 ship’s wheel and even climb into a bunk that will make you especially glad you’re staying at Four Seasons.

Learn guitar in Austin, Texas

At Four Seasons Hotel Austin, guests of any age can play giant Jenga on the leafy grounds, kayak and stand-up paddleboard at the adjacent Lady Bird Lake, and – every Friday and Saturday night – make s’mores in the glow of lanterns hung from oak trees at the Hotel’s two firepits. But the highlight for music lovers is the Taylor Guitars Concierge program: You can borrow either a Baby Taylor or a 214 DLX guitar for four-hour jam sessions, or book a lesson with a pro.

“If they’re brand new to guitar, most guests who take a lesson begin with a few basic chords,” says Concierge Cabe Thornton, a staffer at Four Seasons Hotel Austin since 2012. “After some practice, they’ll move on to easy pop tunes that most people know, like ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ or ‘Bad Moon Rising.’ You can leave having memorized at least a few chords – enough to impress friends back home.” Stay tuned for another amenity at this property: an Airstream playhouse, coming later in 2018.

Take a bike safari in Mauritius

If at first Mauritius, an island off the coast of Madagascar, seems a bit far to take the kids, consider the perks at the 64-acre Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita. Beyond the tropical climate, the resort boasts features families won’t believe. In the thatched-roof Hobbit Village, children can bake pizza in a miniature kitchen; the whole family can take a quad bike safari through nearby Casela Nature Parks, where you’ll spot zebras, wild boar and ostriches; and teens can learn to spin records with resident DJ Ashley Gai in Karokan, the young adult centre.

But one of the most beloved activities has to be catching (and releasing) fiddler crabs, ghost crabs and mud crabs at sunset on the Resort’s beach. “Growing up in Mauritius, crab hunting is something you’d often see families doing over the weekend,” says Kids Club staffer Sophie Beaublanc. “The kids love searching for them in the evening; it’s a great activity for parents to join in with.”

Zip-line in Whistler, British Columbia

With Alaskan malamute Maola on staff for welcome cuddles, and Ski Concierges waiting with hot cocoa and house-made chocolate chip cookies, what else could wee guests of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler ask for? A lot, apparently – and their wishes would be granted. Families adore the on-site mini golf (not to mention lessons at Nicklaus North and Whistler golf club), the giant Connect Four set and nearby zip-lining courses. “The more kid-friendly option is offered by The Adventure Group and features a seat-like harness on a mountain-to-mountain ride,” says Kate Colley, a representative of the Resort. “Guests can even ride them side by side, two at a time.” Double the fun.

Tech Amenities You Have to See to Believe

Strolling the grounds of Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is an eye-popping experience – 53 gardeners work on the 64-acre lagoon-side Resort, perfecting the lush grounds. But it’s also an educational one, thanks to the resort’s new garden tour—guests can use their phones to scan Quick Response (QR) codes along the walkways to identify local plants, like the Pandanus utilis (with spiny leaves and aerial roots) and the green leaves of the rare Cassine orientalis. The QR codes also detail “Fast Facts” on each plant, including growing advice for green thumbs. “Look for Traveller’s Palm, which has a fan-like shape that inspired the international airport here, and the tamarind tree, which is found near the tennis courts and has a sweet fruit that’s part of the welcome amenity for guests,” says Debbie Duval, Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Resort. “All guests are able to enjoy use of complimentary bicycles throughout their stay, so this is the perfect way to learn more about nature while cycling around.”

Calling all oenophiles: Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley at East Palo Alto has added Plum wine dispensers – which chill, preserve and perfectly serve full bottles of wine – to suites and select guest rooms. “One of the great things about Plum is that it allows us greater flexibility to feature hand-selected wines based on our guest preferences,” says Director of Food and Beverage Richard Lanaud. “The wines can also be easily changed out, so for instance if we know a guest prefers a specific type of wine, or if they are bringing a special vintage from their own collection, we can very easily place those wines in the machine, which then individually chills and preserves them at their perfect serving temperature.” The machines hold two bottles at a time – typically a white and a red – and they’re identified by a built-in database of more than 6,000 wines; it automatically shares the backstory of the wine’s varietal and vintage, and alerts management if one needs to be replenished. One of the first wines featured in the dispensers was Blend 122, a unique red wine blend created by Byington Vineyard & Winery exclusively for the Hotel.

Four Seasons app

In November, Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort launched a new Style Chat service connecting guests to a stylist via text. The stylist hand-selects items from the Resort’s boutique, which carries brands like Tory Burch, Missoni and Jimmy Choo, that are then delivered directly to the guest’s room. “Many of our visitors are hurrying from park to park, or trying to squeeze in a few extra minutes in the Resort’s lazy river,” says Teresa Hughes, Retail Manager. “Letting us deliver curated fashion straight to your room allows you more time to enjoy your vacation.” It can also solve last-minute sartorial problems. “We recently had a guest whose husband wanted to take her to Capa, our rooftop restaurant, for dinner, but her luggage was lost by the airline,” Hughes says. “We connected with her via Style Chat, then sent a ‘Night Out’ look to her room. She stopped into the boutique to say ‘thank you’ and that she was so pleased she didn’t have to spend time away from her kids shopping.”

In December, Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills unveiled five guest rooms and two suites tailor-made for a healthful stay, including amenities curated by Delos like circadian mood lighting, meditations by Deepak Chopra, and an in-room dining menu created by the Hotel’s Executive Chef Byron Thomas and approved by the Cleveland Clinic (including antioxidant-rich salads, seared salmon and avocado and pistachio dumplings). “The air is purified in the rooms four times per hour, which reduces pollen, mould spores, and other pollutants,” says Billy Cueto, Director of Rooms at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. “And each comes with in-room yoga mats by Alo, a body ball and hand weights; suites even have Peloton bikes.”

If applying sunscreen to your entire body in 10 seconds without lifting a finger sounds too fantastic to be true, check into Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. In July, the property installed a SnappyScreen, which was invented by Cornell University alum Kristen McCllelan to apply your choice of PABA- and paraben-free sunscreen in SPF 15, 30 or 40 to your entire body. (Guests have easy access to disposable hair caps and eye protection.) “SnappyScreen was a huge hit with our guests – it was amazing to see so many people Snapchat and Boomerang videos of themselves using the device all summer long,” says Graham Williamson, Director of Food and Beverage at the Resort. “Even golfers have found the SnappyScreen, and sneak onto the pool deck before they hit the first tee to apply their sunscreen.”

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon recently introduced the Art Collection by Ritz Lisbon app for iPhone and iPad — a behind-the-scenes tour of the property that even allows users to rate the museum-quality pieces by Portuguese artists like Carlos Botelho, Estrela Faria and Lagoa Henriques. “Don’t miss the three tapestries by José de Almada Negreiros in the lobby-level lounge named for him, the Almada Negreiros Lounge,” says Catarina Mendonça Social Media & Marketing Coordinator for the property. “They’re hand-made and based on the Centauro constellation; note how different coloured dots simulate earth and sky.”

Improve your stroke with a swimming legend at Cap-Ferrat

A man and a woman sit on the edge of a pool overlooking the ocean

An icon of the Côte d’Azur since 1950, the swimming pool of Club Dauphin has seen an impressive list of celebrities – from Elizabeth Taylor to Elton John – learning how to master their swim at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat since 1950. Above the rocky coast of the Mediterranean Sea, the 37-metre heated infinity pool is the ideal place to practise breathing control and stroke technique that benefit both serious swimmers and visitors just hoping to feel more comfortable in the water.

The Texas capital of live music, Austin offers plenty of venues for listening to noteworthy bands. At Four Seasons Hotel Austin, your  guest room can be one of them. Through the complimentary Taylor Guitar Concierge program, you can host your own four-hour jam session. Elevate your yoga practice in Bali

Aerial yoga

Learning to fly takes on new meaning at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, where AntiGravity® Yoga lures both novices and long-time yogis seeking an alternative to their standard practice. Supported by soft hammocks, students explore full-body movements designed to increase strength and flexibility. “Once you let go of your fears and trust the instructor – as well as the strength of the hammock – you feel such a sense of achievement,” says Yoga Master Putu Purnama. “This is the most rewarding thing about teaching AntiGravity Yoga: seeing the guests’ delight when they surprise themselves.”

Fly falcons in the countryside of Hampshire

Take up a sport favoured by English kings with a falconry lesson at Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire. A hunting tradition with deep roots in Hampshire, falconry now showcases the strength and majesty of birds of prey while pointing towards ecology and education. “We go on Hawk Walks around the estate to demonstrate all the techniques and equipment used in falconry,” says Simon Wilson, a falconer at Four Seasons. “Falcons are experts at body language, so we teach guests body language techniques to get the birds to move.” After learning the basics, slip on a glove and try flying a falcon, hawk or owl.

From Africa With Love: 3 Romantic Getaways

Travelling as a couple can tell you a lot about your relationship. How do you make decisions? How do you respond to unexpected opportunities? Most important, will your journey strengthen your bond?

Africa is a very special place. It brought us together like never before. – Robert Michael Poole

For photographer Robert Michael Poole and his partner, Marcy Yu, the answer is yes. After they met in Panama in January 2016, Marcy persuaded Robert to travel to the San Blas Islands. Afterwards, he persuaded her to quit her nine-to-five job and travel around the world. They’ve been to Costa Rica, Belize, France and Monaco together.

Most recently, they discovered three distinct romantic escapes in the Serengeti, Seychelles and Mauritius. “Africa is a very special place, a once-in-a-lifetime trip,” Robert says. “That’s saying something from two people who travel constantly.”

They made their plans carefully, but didn’t set them in stone. “We anticipated we would have to be very flexible,” Marcy says. Their patience paid off with safari adventures and picture-perfect beaches – and time to discover more about each other while exploring.

Map of Africa

Upon arriving at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Robert and Marcy were immediately struck by the landscape. “It hasn’t changed for thousands of years,” he says, “and there you are, at this permanent, modern Lodge that’s wonderfully authentic. It’s perfect for adventure – and romance.”

Map of Africa

Although you’re still in Africa when you arrive in Seychelles, it seems a world away from the Serengeti. “Everything about it is different,” Robert says.

He and Marcy were delighted to explore this new world, including Four Seasons Resort Seychelles. Robert, a seasoned traveller by this time, says, “It’s easily one of the most spectacular resorts I’ve ever stayed in.”

*Note: Travel from the Serengeti to Seychelles includes a bush plane flight from the Serengeti to Nairobi, where guests stay overnight before departing on a short flight to the island. Consider the Safari Unplugged offer to experience the best of both worlds.

After romantic stays in the Serengeti and Seychelles, Robert and Marcy weren’t sure what to expect at Four Seasons Resort Mauritius. What they discovered, however, was just right. “We both found the experience there to be quite calming,” says Robert. “Although travelling is the ultimate relationship test, we found exactly what we were looking for.”

On Instagram, Bora Bora is repeatedly deemed a favourite escape, even called the land of “50 shades of blue.” In addition to the seemingly endless waters, guests can soak in the sight of Mount Otemanu. Sundara, Bali at Jimbaran Bay

Sundara, lauded as the best beach club in Bali, sets this escape apart from the rest. Enjoy live music, sundown cocktails and fresh Jimbaran seafood while you lounge beachside.

The lure of the exotic leads us to another one of our favourite tropical escapes: the beach of Jimbaran Bay. With volcanic mountains visible in the distance, soft white sand and year-round warm temperatures characterize the Bali beach.

After relaxing in the sun, get active with catamaran spilling, stand-up paddle boarding and surfing Bali’s famous breaks. Linger for Jimbaran’s magical sunsets with a drink at Sundara beach club and fresh seafood at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay.

Best Beaches in Latin America

Though typically known for its vivid rain forests, South America and Central America can also claim some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

No setting sun is more gorgeous than one dozily sinking behind the ocean, which is why Costa Rica is one of your favourite beaches at day’s end. With warm gulf waters, pristine white sands and tropical trees swaying inland, the Gulf of Papagayo is a premier setting for beach photos – day and night.

Editor’s Pick: Punta Mita

Pun 694 970x540

The Marieta Islands just off the coast of Mexico have hidden beaches perfect for a secluded escape.

With nearby golf courses and opportunities for surfing, Punta Mita is one of our favourite beaches for those who want to do more than just relax.

For a day excursion, visit Islas Marietas National Park, just a few miles west of Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita and relax on one of the world’s most unusual beaches. The islands, formed by volcanic activity, are rich in natural wildlife. From December to March, marvel at the power and grace of humpback whales during their migration through the bay.

Best African Beaches

Home to some of the best lesser-known snorkelling and diving spots, the islands off Africa are excellent options for your next beach getaway.

Traveller’s Pick: Seychelles

Just off the coast of East Africa lie Four Seasons Resort Seychelles and Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island, home to numerous beaches and nature reserves. Nature is awe-inspiring here. You may even catch a glimpse of a rare giant Aldabra tortoise.

“Nothing can beat Seychelles sunsets,” says traveller Tania Gae Mllitello. Besides the beautiful close of the day, she also loves the relaxed atmosphere and the great surfing waves. “On a Sunday afternoon you can go there and find many Seychellois and tourists together catching waves or having a picnic by the beach.

Editor’s Pick: Mauritius

Hidden enclave by ocean

Surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and basking in nearly year-round sunshine, Mauritius is an island paradise.

The island of Mauritius, blissfully stranded in the Indian Ocean, beckons travellers who seek the serenity of being one with nature. At Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita guests can enjoy three private beaches, with their choice of a beach sofa, palm tree hammock or sun lounger on Ile aux Cerfs, the Resort’s exclusive private island.

Sail the turquoise sea, marvel at giant tortoises on the beach, play golf on a championship course, or just gaze at the glinting water outlined by the Bambou Mountains in the distance.

Best Beaches in Southeast Asia

With some of the world’s most varied coral reefs and year-round tropical climate, the “East Indies” offer travellers some of the most picturesque scenes for their beach vacation.

Traveller’s Pick: The Maldives

Guests seeking stillness and tranquillity often turn to the beaches of the Maldives, a nation made up of more than 1,000 coral islands known for their blue lagoons and underwater scenery. Katharina Horstmann claims the Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru as her favourite beach because “it reveals the perfect beauty of nature.”

“For me, [true happiness] is when I walk alone on the beach through the coral sand, while the shallow turquoise water tickles my toes.”

For the ultimate in peaceful seclusion, escape to Maldives Private Island Voavah at Baa Atoll.

Editor’s Pick: Hoi An, Vietnam

Beach at Hoi An, Vietnam

Enjoy direct access to Ha My Beach from your suite at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai in Hoi An, Vietnam.

Lying in Vietnam’s cultural heartland, the tranquil kilometre-long stretch of beach in Hoi An has been deemed one of the world’s best beaches, and it’s also a relaxing perch from which to explore the country’s rich history.

In between bouts of lazing in the sun, take an excursion to any of the three UNESCO heritage sites nearby: Hue’s imperial city, the temple sanctuary of My Son and Hoi An’s enchanting lantern-lit streets.

Best Beaches in the United States

Whether you’re looking to ride a gnarly wave, sail the Atlantic or escape to the peaceful exotic, the United States of America has a beach for you.

Traveller’s Pick: Lanai, Hawaii

Though Lanai begs to be photographed for its Hawaiian sunsets, swaying palms and sweeping views of the Pacific, its starry night sky is what moved Mark Edward Harris to share the beauty of what has been long celebrated by guests as a favourite American beach destination.

Spend the day playing in the white sands of the secluded “Shipwreck Beach,” accessible only by 4×4 jeep, and snorkelling in the waters of Hulopoe Bay, a protected marine preserve. Then hike to Pu’uPehe (Sweetheart Rock), 20 minutes from Four Seasons Resort Lanai, and stare into the glittering nighttime.

Editor’s Pick: Palm Beach, Florida

Traveller’s Pick: Nevis

A post shared by Four Seasons Resort Nevis (@fsnevis)

Called a “hidden gem” by guests, Nevis offers lovely beaches that are almost never crowded. “We spent every evening on this beach watching the beautiful sun set into the ocean,” says Anna Ng, who selected Nevis as her favourite beach getaway. “You truly feel like you’re on a quiet, remote island away from the rest of the world.”

On the north side of the island is a sweet spot, Lovers Beach, virtually hidden from the road. Its secluded location ensures guests optimal privacy. Locals agree that the best beaches on the island are on the northern and western shores. A more popular spot is Pinney’s Beach, running for about three miles near Four Seasons Resort Nevis.

Editor’s Pick: Anguilla

Anguilla hammock

Relax in your choice of a hammock or beach lounger while enjoying the laid-back atmosphere in Anguilla.

From hidden coves to long stretches of powdery sand, Anguilla is home to 33 breathtaking beaches. And with no cruise ships or casinos allowed, you’re promised a relaxing scene for unwinding.
