CHERISH THE LAND IN MAUI

There are plenty of ways to embrace the spirit of aloha at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea: outrigger canoe tours, lei making, cultural tours, hula lessons. But at the heart of Hawaiian heritage is malama ‘aina – caring for and cherishing the land. To help protect its stretch of Wailea’s golden sand beach, the Resort has joined with the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Malama Hawaii program to offer Resort credits and a free night’s stay for guests who participate in a self-led beach clean-up. Pick up your supplies from the Concierge, then set out on a three-hour walk on the beach with family, collecting debris and learning how it affects marine life. It’s a great way to teach children to appreciate their surroundings.

TRACK ENDANGERED TURTLES IN NEVIS

From June to October, three species of sea turtle – the hawksbill, the leatherback and the green turtle – flock to Nevis to nest. All are endangered, and all need our help to protect their nests. For 15 years, Four Seasons Resort Nevis, West Indies has partnered with the Sea Turtle Conservancy to sponsor GPS satellite transmitters that help researchers track the turtles’ migration. Guests can get in on the action, too: The Resort’s annual Sea Turtle Conservation Weekend, held each July, includes night turtle-tracking walks, sea turtle–themed programs, and catch-tag-and-release events. After guests depart, they can go online and see where the turtles have travelled.

SUPPORT WILDLIFE IN SERENGETI

Elephants, lions, antelopes, exotic birds: Keep an eye out for them when you stay at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti. After all, the Lodge is located in one of the most magnificent wildlife habitats in the world. To protect that habitat, the Lodge supports a number of initiatives, including the Serengeti Lion Project – the world’s longest continuous field study of large mammals – and the Serengeti Cheetah Project, which identifies and maps the big cats. One project dear to the heart of Ahmed Attas, manager of the Lodge’s Discovery Centre: a partnership with the Frankfurt Zoological Society’s Rhino Conservation Project, which supports mobile anti-poaching units to help safeguard the critically endangered black rhino. Every Four Seasons–led game drive, walking tour and safari benefits these conservation programs.

LEARN ABOUT GIANT TURTLES IN SEYCHELLES

Through partnerships with the Island Conservation Society and WiseOceans, guests at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island can assist in beach clean-ups, native tree planting and snorkelling excursions led by marine educators. One of the most memorable ways to get involved in conservation efforts on the island is a visit to the Tortoise Sanctuary, just a bike ride from the Resort. The Aldabra giant tortoise as a species faces extinction, but here you can watch individuals as they feed on fruit and move slowly through their habitat. Sponsor a juvenile tortoise and learn fun facts about the beloved creatures – for example, the Aldabra giant tortoise drinks through its nose.

PROTECT CORAL REEFS IN MALDIVES

Few marine conservation programs have been as successful as the Reefscaper initiative launched by Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa and environmental consultancy company Seamarc in 2001. Initially an effort to help local reefs damaged by coral bleaching, the program today includes Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru and has deployed more than 500,000 pieces of 40 types of coral to help build up reefs and re-establish fish species like the citron goby. Guests can get involved at the Marine Discovery Centre: Help build coral frames, then dive into the lagoon to see them at work. Later, you can check in on the corals growing on your frame via the Marine Savers website.

STUDY SHARKS & BUTTERFLIES IN COSTA RICA

Take a two-day deep dive into the Pacific Ocean’s diverse ecosystems at Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo. On the first day of the Resort’s Conservation Land and Sea Extraordinary Experience, a private plane whisks you to the Golfo Dulce, a large marine area on the south Pacific coast. There, you’ll spend the day aboard a luxury yacht studying the habitat of hammerhead sharks with the marine biologists and conservationists behind the non-profit Misión Tiburón. On the second day, take a 35-minute flight along Guanacaste’s volcanic mountain range and touch down in Quebrada Grande at the lab Dr. Daniel Janzen, known as the “Darwin of Conservation.” Janzen and a team of parataxonomists and field-trained biodiversity specialists will assist guests as they collect caterpillars and test butterfly DNA.

Salt | Hualalai

Of all Hawaii’s small wonders, from shells of adornment to plants of legend and love, the sea contains the purest of all. “The natural salt the ocean provided was a cornerstone of Hawaiian living,” says Uncle Earl Regidor, Kaʻūpūlehu Cultural Center Manager at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. Used in ceremony (alaea salt blessed my new home) and cooking (seasoning the pig that filled our last family imu), it’s also used to heal.

Hiking along the coast adjacent to Four Seasons Resort Hualalai leads guests to the centuries-old Kaʻūpūlehu salt flats. When seawater pools on black lava and dries in the sun, it forms salt that guests gently scoop with wooden spoons and collect in fabric bags.

This precious harvest is used during a private, interactive cooking class where guests explore varieties and their use in traditional Hawaiian cooking and in dishes prepared for the occasion. Seven Hawaiian sea salt varieties are also used in the Salts of the Ocean body treatment at the Spa to promote detoxification and healing.

Stories percolate throughout Hawaii’s landscapes, and the story of sugar is one important part of island history that visitors don’t often experience.

In the Fire & Wine adventure at Four Seasons Resort Maui, guests are invited to do so after arriving by helicopter at historic Haiku House estate on Maui’s north shore. After a wine tasting to determine the evening’s food pairings, guests embark on a private tour led by the director of the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum, who shares stories about the history of the land, estate owners and sugar itself – brought on voyaging canoes millennia ago and Hawaii’s dominant industry from its beginnings in 1835 until 1959.

Later, hand-selected local ingredients are cooked over an open kiawe (mesquite) fire and served by Maui chef and Advanced Sommelier Yeshua Goodman. A special dessert prepared at the fire provides a sweet finish.

“Guests are able to connect deeply to a part of the island not easily accessed but so rich in history,” says Executive Pastry Chef Riccardo Menicucci. “I get to tell part of the story through doing what I love best, expressing myself through food to delight others.”

Just stepping onto the 140-square-mile island of Lanai transports you back in time to an enduring way of life.

“On Lanai, the majority of the local community still sustains traditionally through ocean gathering and hunting,” says Jay Ballesteros, Cultural Guide at Four Seasons Resort Lanai.

The Resort’s cultural fishing expedition allows guests to understand this important lifestyle first-hand by gathering directly from the sea themselves. “The guides are all local and culturally connected, and go between the lines to personalize the experience,” Ballesteros says, including hands-on practice with different types of coastal fishing, accompanied by a beach picnic and tales of history, culture and authentic island life.

The experience deepens with stops at the old Keomoku fishing village and 800-year-old Waia‘ōpae Fishpond, being rebuilt today to revive the unique Hawaiian aquaculture system that was based on it. At day’s end, if a guest’s catch is big enough, it can be prepared for dinner back at the Resort for a truly sea-to-table experience.

Heading out for a day at sea has been ingrained in island life since Hawaiians first arrived in voyaging canoes using the stars to find their way.

This ancient art of voyaging comes to life at Four Seasons Resort O‘ahu at Ko Olina as guests climb from the sand and into the wa‘a (canoe) Ka‘aumoana, hand-built by experienced navigator Nakoa Prejean.

“Being in a traditionally styled Hawaiian sailing canoe is completely different from any type of adventure,” Prejean says. “It gives guests a cultural connection to some of the ancient ways prevalent in our culture for thousands of years.” As the Ka‘aumoana sails out of the lagoon along the west coast of Oahu, the the ocean’s pure intimacy and thrill unfold while Prejean’s team shares stories of voyaging and wahi pana (storied places).

The canoe then heads to private snorkelling spots so guests can dive in and explore pristine marine environments abundant with sea turtles and spinner dolphins. “Out there in the wa‘a,” Prejean says, “they feel connected with the ocean and make unforgettable memories.”

Jennifer Nelson, front office manager at Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, has been a Four Seasons team member for 22 years. Her dogs, Bernard, a Shih Tzu, and Charlie Ann, a rambunctious boxer, have reaped the benefits.

“They are some spoiled pups,” Nelson says. “Charlie and Bernard visited Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Vail, San Francisco, Scottsdale and Dallas. Your pups always have a cosy Four Seasons doggy bed awaiting them – and no, they do not need to share, they each get their own. If you order In-Room Dining, ask for the puppy menus, as most Four Seasons have a special menu just for your pups.

“Nothing brings me more joy as the front office manager than when a guest checks in with their furry friends. You see the staff instantly light up. It is not just a convenience and luxury for the guest, it also brings the team instant smiles daily.”

Guests at Four Seasons Hotel Megève can build a special relationship with dogs in the wilderness. “I find our dogsledding activity to be much more than just a riding experience: You get to see the herd from within, understand the hierarchy among those furry athletes, as they get ready to run,” says General Manager Stéphane Gras. “Then, sitting low and cuddling in the sled, the adrenaline keeps on increasing as the pace picks up; after a few seconds of adjustments, you just enjoy the beautiful white surroundings – do not get surprised if you start shouting with joy. 

“At the end of the ride, you get to assist the expert musher as he checks on the herd and gets ready to feed them – sun gets down, a bit of yapping, the herd is getting ready to sleep in the middle of the birch grove.”

The Hotel’s resident Lab mixes, Hank and Freddy, grew up at Four Seasons Hotel The Surf Club. “The dogs do their property rounds and head from department to department to cheer up the staff and keep them company,” says Communications Manager Natasha Dodd. Resident and visiting pups are treated like VIPs. “The Pawsh Life,” a dedicated pet menu, offers house-made meals, along with a selection of healthy biscuits and cookies from the Barkery. Pet owners don’t have to go far to walk their pup. The property has two designated dog parks, both enclosed in greenery and outfitted with pet stations. And when guests head to dinner, Four Seasons team members ensure their beloved pets are looked after. One of the Hotel’s dog-loving supervisors has been known to take selfies with visiting dogs and share the photos with pet parents to put them at ease while they’re away.

Guest Experience Supervisor Danielle Carp has worked with extended-stay clients towards achievements in winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. But her favourite educational adventure? Ice climbing.

“I have assisted our guests in curating adventure-based programs that have allowed them the opportunity to overcome adversity and to put their trust in a team, guide or leader,” she says. “These experiences allow guests to improve their communication skills and build their confidence.

“Personally, I have an affinity for ice climbing. You are provided with an ice axe, a harness and crampons. Your guide places ice screws into an ice wall, you climb the wall while the guide is belaying you on your way up. It’s similar to a pulley system. The climber must fully trust their guide as they climb the ice wall. The views are extraordinary, and the overall experience is truly like nothing on earth.”

The new partnership between Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora and WiseOceans has been a hit with longer-stay guests. Travellers with less time can enjoy a complimentary snorkelling tour. When they have more flexibility, they can combine recreation with education and embark on a Private Lagoon Discovery Tour. This private, guided experience is an amazing way to learn about the marine environment while aboard a private chartered boat. Guests then join the Resort’s marine biologist, Louis Sabadel, under the surface.

“To create a mountain of memories you need to start on top of a mountain,” Marissink says. “We set up daily skiing lessons for both the parents and the kids with local ski guides, who truly know the hidden gems of our backyard.

These were followed by cultural and culinary itineraries all around town: the best places for a Canadian Caesar, the best cheese fondue, Crockpot customized dinners prepared by our kitchen team. Our team members also shared their local tips, and the family loved their insights. It was truly rewarding to watch these guests sharing interests and developing a bond that will last a lifetime.”
