Tech Amenities You Have to See to Believe

Strolling the grounds of Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is an eye-popping experience – 53 gardeners work on the 64-acre lagoon-side Resort, perfecting the lush grounds. But it’s also an educational one, thanks to the resort’s new garden tour—guests can use their phones to scan Quick Response (QR) codes along the walkways to identify local plants, like the Pandanus utilis (with spiny leaves and aerial roots) and the green leaves of the rare Cassine orientalis. The QR codes also detail “Fast Facts” on each plant, including growing advice for green thumbs. “Look for Traveller’s Palm, which has a fan-like shape that inspired the international airport here, and the tamarind tree, which is found near the tennis courts and has a sweet fruit that’s part of the welcome amenity for guests,” says Debbie Duval, Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Resort. “All guests are able to enjoy use of complimentary bicycles throughout their stay, so this is the perfect way to learn more about nature while cycling around.”

Calling all oenophiles: Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley at East Palo Alto has added Plum wine dispensers – which chill, preserve and perfectly serve full bottles of wine – to suites and select guest rooms. “One of the great things about Plum is that it allows us greater flexibility to feature hand-selected wines based on our guest preferences,” says Director of Food and Beverage Richard Lanaud. “The wines can also be easily changed out, so for instance if we know a guest prefers a specific type of wine, or if they are bringing a special vintage from their own collection, we can very easily place those wines in the machine, which then individually chills and preserves them at their perfect serving temperature.” The machines hold two bottles at a time – typically a white and a red – and they’re identified by a built-in database of more than 6,000 wines; it automatically shares the backstory of the wine’s varietal and vintage, and alerts management if one needs to be replenished. One of the first wines featured in the dispensers was Blend 122, a unique red wine blend created by Byington Vineyard & Winery exclusively for the Hotel.

In November, Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort launched a new Style Chat service connecting guests to a stylist via text. The stylist hand-selects items from the Resort’s boutique, which carries brands like Tory Burch, Missoni and Jimmy Choo, that are then delivered directly to the guest’s room. “Many of our visitors are hurrying from park to park, or trying to squeeze in a few extra minutes in the Resort’s lazy river,” says Teresa Hughes, Retail Manager. “Letting us deliver curated fashion straight to your room allows you more time to enjoy your vacation.” It can also solve last-minute sartorial problems. “We recently had a guest whose husband wanted to take her to Capa, our rooftop restaurant, for dinner, but her luggage was lost by the airline,” Hughes says. “We connected with her via Style Chat, then sent a ‘Night Out’ look to her room. She stopped into the boutique to say ‘thank you’ and that she was so pleased she didn’t have to spend time away from her kids shopping.”

In December, Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills unveiled five guest rooms and two suites tailor-made for a healthful stay, including amenities curated by Delos like circadian mood lighting, meditations by Deepak Chopra, and an in-room dining menu created by the Hotel’s Executive Chef Byron Thomas and approved by the Cleveland Clinic (including antioxidant-rich salads, seared salmon and avocado and pistachio dumplings). “The air is purified in the rooms four times per hour, which reduces pollen, mould spores, and other pollutants,” says Billy Cueto, Director of Rooms at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. “And each comes with in-room yoga mats by Alo, a body ball and hand weights; suites even have Peloton bikes.”

If applying sunscreen to your entire body in 10 seconds without lifting a finger sounds too fantastic to be true, check into Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. In July, the property installed a SnappyScreen, which was invented by Cornell University alum Kristen McCllelan to apply your choice of PABA- and paraben-free sunscreen in SPF 15, 30 or 40 to your entire body. (Guests have easy access to disposable hair caps and eye protection.) “SnappyScreen was a huge hit with our guests – it was amazing to see so many people Snapchat and Boomerang videos of themselves using the device all summer long,” says Graham Williamson, Director of Food and Beverage at the Resort. “Even golfers have found the SnappyScreen, and sneak onto the pool deck before they hit the first tee to apply their sunscreen.”

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon recently introduced the Art Collection by Ritz Lisbon app for iPhone and iPad — a behind-the-scenes tour of the property that even allows users to rate the museum-quality pieces by Portuguese artists like Carlos Botelho, Estrela Faria and Lagoa Henriques. “Don’t miss the three tapestries by José de Almada Negreiros in the lobby-level lounge named for him, the Almada Negreiros Lounge,” says Catarina Mendonça Social Media & Marketing Coordinator for the property. “They’re hand-made and based on the Centauro constellation; note how different coloured dots simulate earth and sky.”

Moment by Moment: 6 Tips for Planning a Picture-Perfect Wedding

Your wedding day is something you want to remember for all the right reasons. From flowers to food to photography, there are many elements that go into an event you and your guests will love. And often it’s the little things that have the biggest impact.

Who better to weigh in on what makes for a standout affair than those with a well-trained eye for “I do” details – our Four Seasons Weddings experts. Here, they offer up their tried-and-true advice for creating the celebration you’ve always imagined, whether you’re dreaming up a destination wedding or one closer to home.

1. Take Time for a “First Look”

Carving out a few minutes before the wedding for a “first look” is a great way to connect with your partner and take a breath before your ceremony begins. “The key to creating the perfect first look is keeping it truly private, meaning just the two of you and the photographer,” says Gerald Lim, the Catering Sales and Wedding Manager at Four Seasons Hotel Seattle.

Lim always recommends planning a first look with your photographer beforehand so you can choose just the right location. The first look above was captured at the Hotel’s infinity pool, with views overlooking the Olympic Mountains, the Seattle Great Wheel and Elliott Bay. The best time? “Sunsets are especially gorgeous in the summer in Seattle,” Lim says.

2. Let Your Ceremony Space Shine

When it comes to enhancing your ceremony space, let the time of day be your guide. The light-filled Aria event space at Four Seasons Hotel Toronto was a glorious sight for this opulent daytime wedding, with towering green and white floral arrangements that accented the airiness of the venue. Having an evening ceremony? Think candles, crystal and wedding flowers that pop.

Speaking of flowers, you don’t have to say goodbye to all that floral after you say “I do.” Lina Marchesano, Senior Catering Sales Manager at the Hotel, recommends making the most of your ceremony décor by repurposing flower arrangements or candles at your reception. “They can be the backdrop on your ceremony stage, then be moved behind your head table,” she says.“Or keep your ceremony stage and backdrop to highlight your cake or your sweet table.”

3. Work with Your Baker to Create a Cake That’s Uniquely You

A classic ballroom like the one at the manorial Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire is the perfect setting to experiment with a twist on the traditional, especially where guests least expect it. “Your cake can be the perfect opportunity to showcase your personality and passions,” says Emma Westacott, Wedding and Events Manager at the Hotel, who loved seeing the vision of bride Paula Rooney (who happens to be an award-winning florist) come to life with cake designer Krishanthi Armitt. Using bold colours and cascading flowers, the pair collaborated to create a statement piece that was one of the biggest highlights of the wedding. “Paula’s love of floristry is evident from the use of her favourite flowers on her cake,” Westacott says.

4. Don’t Forget the Personal Touches

While elements such as your wedding flowers, décor, and even your entertainment are definitely important, it’s the personal touches that guests will find most memorable. “The best way to personalize a wedding is to come up with unique ideas that reflect the couple’s interests and favourite things,” says Gus Tejeda, Director of Marketing for Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas. For Kalli and Andy, that definitely included their two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Bingley and Sherman.

Since the Hotel is pet-friendly, wedding planner Emily Reno with Weddings & Events by Emily suggested the dogs serve as ring bearers. “Bingley and Sherman sat with the couple as they got ready for the day and took wedding photos,” Tejeda says. “They even wore tuxedos and mini boutonnières.” After the ceremony, during dinner in the Acacia Ballroom, the pups went with a private dog sitter so Mom and Dad could enjoy the reception.

5. Capture the (Whole) Moment

Your wedding photos should be a pleasure to look at for a lifetime. Besides choosing a photographer whom you trust, it’s important to make sure that person knows how to take advantage of the destination – particularly one as awe-inspiring as Four Seasons Resort Nevis.

The right photographer will help you explore and highlight your surroundings, as Joy Marie Smallwood did for Katie and Jamie’s wedding photos. “Coming from Colorado, Katie and Jamie wanted to connect with the history and nature of their wedding destination,” says Sabrina Shelton, Conference Service Manager for the Resort. “They fell in love with the island from the moment they arrived and were intent on enjoying the entire resort, not just the beautiful beach where their ceremony took place.”

The couple and their photographer ventured out for photo ops throughout the Resort, including the fairway of the second hole on the golf course, with 17th-century sugar mill ruins as the backdrop. “There’s an incredible amount of geographic diversity here on Nevis and a lot of expansive views,” Shelton says. “A wide-angle lens is key to capturing the wonders of this magical island.”

Four Seasons Resort Nevis

6. Stop and Smell the Roses

Whether you’re dreaming of a lush garden ceremony filled with peonies or a sophisticated arrangement of calla lilies on your reception tables, your florist can help bring your blooming Pinterest boards to life. Accentuating your venue’s natural setting, as this couple did for their spectacular chuppah in the Wetherly Garden of Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, can create a gorgeous backdrop.

“Wetherly Garden is an oasis in the city, surrounded by European-style fountains, citrus, and succulents,” says Jennifer Rebello, the Hotel’s Director of Catering. “[The venue] lends itself to a variety of ceremony and floral styles, like contemporary, enchanted garden, traditional romantic, and rustic Napa style,” she says.

Rebello adds that the combination of mature landscaping and the Italian-tiled aisle often stimulates the creativity of florists and couples alike. “It [gives] our floral partners the creative freedom to design unique looks for our brides’ and grooms’ dream weddings.”

7 Pieces of Art You Didn’t Know to Look For

The Mona Lisa, Starry Night, Dalí’s Persistence of Memory – we all need to see these show-stoppers, but visitors can forget that they’re in a museum full of equally beautiful, intriguing artworks. Because of their more famous neighbours hanging nearby, these 7 paintings and art installations are some of the most undeservedly overlooked masterworks in the world.

London: Saint Margaret of Antioch

Francisco de Zurbaran’s Saint Margaret of Antioch. On Display at the National Gallery

Encounter St Margaret’s direct gaze, but take a moment to admire the painter’s attention to detail and the menace of the dragon beneath her feet.

You’re in London, at the National Gallery, and your first port of call – naturally – will be Van Gogh’s iconic Sunflowers, hanging in Room 43. But for one of the gallery’s curators, Francesca Whitlum-Cooper, it’s Francisco de Zurbaran’s Saint Margaret of Antioch (in Gallery 30) that shouldn’t be missed.

“Every time I look at Zurbaran’s picture of Saint Margaret,” Whitlum-Cooper says, “I fall in love with the bright red of her skirt, her beautifully painted alforjas, or saddlebags, the amazing geometric swirls of her straw hat – it’s a surprise every time to look down at her feet and remember that there’s a menacing dragon prowling around them.”

“To me, there’s something very modern and powerful about Saint Margaret’s direct gaze,” the curator continues, “so cool and calm, so confident in her faith, the dragon’s presence doesn’t bother her in the least.”

Paris: Death of the Virgin

While the notorious crowd swarms around Leonardo’s most famous work, the Mona Lisa, at the Louvre, slip away to see Caravaggio’s Death of the Virgin (1606). This Italian baroque masterpiece shows the Virgin Mary’s mortal body as you’ve never seen it depicted before. The painting is so intense that it was rejected by the monks at the church it was intended for, Santa Maria della Scala in Rome.

Los Angeles: Portrait of a Girl/Still Life With Fan

Max Pechstein's Portrait of a Girl/Still Life With Fan on display at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art

Highlighting the dark, oppressive environment of Europe’s post-war period, Portrait of a Girl/Still Life With Fan served as the beginning of a breakthrough for artists Wassily Kandinsky and Emil Nolde in art’s contemporary period.

When you go to LA’s most famous art museum, Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, chances are you’ll flock to see Diego Rivera’s Día des Flores (Flower Day), 1925. It’s one of his most iconic depictions of the indigenous peoples of Mexico, and the first major Rivera painting to enter a public art collection in the U.S. But as you meander through the collections, be sure not to overlook the paintings of German expressionist Max Pechstein.

Although he’s not as well known as his contemporaries Wassily Kandinsky and Emil Nolde, he played an important part in the breakthrough of the style. Pechstein survived the turmoil of the 20th century – and was incredibly skilled at translating this onto the canvas. His painting Portrait of a Girl/Still Life With Fan, painted in 1919–20, captures the dark, meditative atmosphere of the post-war period in Europe.

Seoul: Matrilineal Society in Asia – China #4

You can find the work of American greats, such as Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, at the Seoul Museum of Art. But it would be a shame to miss the emerging Korean artists that the museum nurtures and showcases. Admire Bek Ji Soon’s photographic portraits of women from across South East Asia, particularly her photograph Matrilineal Society in Asia – China #4, in which a young girl in traditional clothes – confident and joyful in her gaze – sits front and centre. It’s a unique way to get acquainted with the city’s locals and learn more about the culture.

New York: One: Number 31, 1950

Jackson Pollock’s One: Number 31, 1950. On Display at the Museum of Modern Art.

One of the “drip” paintings Pollock created by pouring and drizzling paint from above, One: Number 31, 1950, highlights the artist’s technical expertise.

If you’d rather avoid the masses crowded around Starry Night, another of MoMA’s must-see paintings is on the same floor. Jackson Pollock’s One: Number 31, 1950 is an iconic piece of American abstract expressionism that is often overlooked since it doesn’t really “look like” anything in the conventional sense. But what you’re really seeing in this painting is Pollock’s dramatic, dynamic movements, throwing paint (and himself) around. It can’t be missed.

Mumbai: Maratha Lady

While visiting Mumbai’s renowned colonial-era Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, it would be difficult to miss Rao Bahadur MV Dhurandhar’s Court Scene, an early 20th-century watercolour. Bahadur was known for capturing the busy scenes and colourful characters of early 20th-century Mumbai, then known as Bombay, and this is a perfect example.

But another of his works, Maratha Lady from 1916, should not be overlooked. Rather than depicting a busy scene, here Bahadur focuses on one strong woman looking straight at the viewer, with a rural scene in the background. At the same time, the soft fabric of her sari shows her softer side, in sync with the rolling hills behind her.

Chicago: The White Place in the Sun

Georgia O’Keeffe’s The White Place in the Sun (1943). On display at the Art institute of Chicago.

At the Art Institute of Chicago, steal away to find O’Keeffe’s White Place in the Sun, which brings to life the smooth and stunning rock formations of New Mexico.

The Art Institute of Chicago is home to Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks (1942), one of the best-known artworks to emerge from 20th-century America, so it’s no surprise that it draws a lot of visitors. While you wait for the crowd to thin out, make your way to AIC’s Gallery 265 and see Georgia O’Keeffe’s The White Place in the Sun (1943). This shows you a completely different side of the U.S. – the sparse desert and smooth yet striking rock formations of the White Place near Abiquiu in New Mexico. The geological formation in the White Place had been smoothed and whittled by water and wind over centuries, until it eventually resembled spires and cliffs, and O’Keeffe contrasts its undulating shapes with the bright blue sky.

Hit the trail in the Santa Monica Mountains

A hiker treks along the Backbone Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Make sure to pack your hiking boots when visiting Westlake Village. This year’s completion of the Backbone Trail offers visitors and locals alike a 67-mile (108-kilometre) uninterrupted path traversing the Santa Monica Mountains’ sandstone peaks and canyons. The trailhead is a 20-minute drive from Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village. A half-century in the making, this ambitious project connects two state parks – Point Mugu in Malibu and Will Rogers in Pacific Palisades – through mountainous terrain that will test your fitness and endurance.

Water sports paradise in Malibu

Yoga on paddleboards near Malibu offers two workouts in one.

Less than a 30-minute drive to the Pacific Ocean and under an hour to Malibu, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel provides an easy springboard to maritime adventures like kayaking and paddleboarding. “Paradise Cove in Malibu has great water sports,” says Honor Echlund, the Hotel’s Assistant Chef Concierge. The Concierge can also arrange a trip to Marina del Rey – just 30 minutes away, it’s home to the largest man-made marina in the United States – where you can paddle, surf or even join a yoga class on a stand-up paddleboard.

Coastal climb in the Santa Barbara mountains

A hiker absorbs the views near Rocky Pine Ridge in the Santa Barbara mountains, not far from the Cold Spring Trail.

Life doesn’t get much healthier – or beachier – than in Santa Barbara, the stylish coastal town 100 miles north of Los Angeles.

“I feel so fortunate to live here,” says Chef de Partie at Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara, an avid runner who has completed 54 marathons. “Santa Barbara is a mecca for runners and cyclists, and you get to enjoy amazing trails year round.”

Bruno recommends hitting the nearby Cold Spring Trail, a path beloved by both hikers and cyclists that combines a variety of terrains leading to majestic views of the Pacific Ocean and Montecito Peak. The hiking trail loops alongside waterfalls and a bubbling creek as it rises from 600 to 1,200 feet (183 to 366 metres). Steep in some places and gently sloped in others, this woodsy walk beats any treadmill or stationary bike regimen.

Heights of San Francisco

The spiral staircase at San Francisco’s Embarcadero Center is one of many climbing opportunities that combine exercise with public art.

No need to limit yourself to a stair machine in a city full of picturesque inclines, such as the residential Outer Sunset neighborhood’s swirly mosaic stairs that reward with vistas of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco cityscape. For another scenic walk, climb Lyon Street’s 244 steps that link gourmet enclave Cow Hollow with stately Pacific Heights. Both are within a few miles of the Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco.

Repair wrinkles with the help of plankton and Icelandic barley

In posh Los Angeles, the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills offers a DNA Facial created by Cosmetic and Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr Ronald Moy. During the treatment, DNA-repair enzymes derived from marine-based plankton and organic barley from Iceland are combined with the oxygenating OxyGeneo+ machine to help the body repair sun damage and wrinkles while boosting collagen production.

“DNA-repair enzymes act like a seamstress, finding damaged DNA and cutting it out,” Moy explains. “It’s a gentle treatment that leaves you fresh and glowing instead of red and raw. The oxygenating effect allows active ingredients to penetrate deeper than they would on their own.”

The treatment begins with a gentle exfoliation that allows the Regeneration Serum to seep into every pore, preventing age and maturity spots while plumping and hydrating the skin.

Experience the most comprehensive physical you’ll ever have

There’s also a BOD POD at Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village, California, used as one component of both The Ranch 4.0 programme and Integrative Lifestyle Physical.

A four-day retreat, The Ranch 4.0 was created in partnership with The Ranch at Live Oak in Malibu and applies a holistic approach to wellness, incorporating nutrition, massage and fitness. The programme consists of 8 to 10 hours per day of rigorous exercise (mountain hikes, exercise classes, yoga), as well as a daily 1,400-calorie vegetarian diet.

The Integrative Lifestyle Physical, which is an optional add-on to The Ranch 4.0, offers a comprehensive medical diagnostic check-up. The full-day experience includes in-depth laboratory analysis, diagnostic testing, fitness and nutritional consultations and energy healing therapies.

“[The Integrative Lifestyle Physical] takes an annual doctor’s check-up to a new level with a full day of testing and consultations from the medical team at the California Health and Longevity Institute, with a breadth of experience in preventative health care,” says The Ranch 4.0 co-founder and CEO Alex Glasscock.

“When paired with our Ranch 4.0 programme, guests leave with a renewed body and mind, along with a personally tailored health and fitness programme to support a vibrantly active and healthy lifestyle,” Glasscock says.

Soothe the skin with sapphires and supersonic speed

Another non-invasive but highly effective tool for younger-looking skin is the PURE TDA (transdermal application) Facial at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay. Finely ground sapphires and crystals exfoliate the skin before the TDA does its work.

After the manual microdermabrasion preps the face for one of four serums, which are applied at supersonic speed and frequency with a computer-controlled applicator, the serum’s nanoparticles penetrate deep into the dermis. The result? Tighter and more nourished skin.

While the spa treatment might sound intense, the 60-minute facial is not at all painful. Instead, the massage technique improves oxygen and blood circulation for an immediate hydration boost.

“Guests see the results – supple, glowing skin – instantly from the first treatment. It is especially popular before weddings.”
— Luisa Anderson, Regional Director of Spa

Burn up to 700 calories in 20 minutes

Get a head start on your beach body in less than 30 minutes at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea with quick and painless i-Lipo laser treatment technology. The low-level lasers signal a lipase enzyme to break down triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol, reducing cellulite and tightening skin.

Between 500 and 700 calories are liberated in a 20-minute session, but to keep them off, it’s recommended to complement the treatment with exercise.

“Dieting is often challenging, and I feel the i-Lipo gives you a running start,” Makozak says. “When you begin to lose weight, it becomes encouraging to continue on. Also, unlike some other sculpting lasers that kill the fat cells and can damage the appearance of the skin, it mimics a natural response in the body.”
