FAQ
Yes. Celebrate December 31 with a New Year’s Eve Dinner Buffet at EMBA KYOTO GRILL. On January 1, enjoy its festive lunch and dinner courses, while Sushi Ginza Onodera offers festive omakase on both dates. Reserve your preferred restaurant and seating time in advance, and share any dietary requirements when booking.
Kyoto’s New Year celebrations centre on temple bells and shrine visits rather than large public fireworks displays. For a traditional evening, experience joya no kane, when temple bells ring to welcome the year. If fireworks are a priority, Universal Studios Japan in Osaka has announced a ticketed countdown display. Our Concierge can advise on travel arrangements.
Nearby Chishaku-in and Kiyomizu-dera hold joya no kane, the traditional New Year’s Eve bell-ringing ceremony. Our Concierge can help you check visiting times, access arrangements and routes from the Hotel. If you wish to ring a bell yourself, ask about participation requirements in advance, as arrangements vary by temple.
Toyokuni Shrine in Higashiyama is a nearby option for hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year. Yasaka Shrine and Fushimi Inari Taisha are also popular choices. Our Concierge can help you plan your route and check visiting arrangements. Expect crowds at major shrines during the first days of January, and allow extra time for your visit.
Opening hours vary over New Year, with some shops, independent restaurants and attractions closing for several days, particularly around January 1. Many temples and shrines welcome visitors for New Year traditions, while the Hotel offers festive dining. Our Concierge can help check individual schedules and plan outings around your stay. Reserve preferred restaurants in advance.
Reserve New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day dining separately from your accommodation to secure your preferred restaurant and seating time. We also recommend booking spa treatments and private cultural experiences in advance, and discuss transport if you plan a late-night temple or shrine visit. Our Concierge can help coordinate your plans and check holiday availability.
