Kyomizu Pottery-Making Experience
With the popularity of tea ceremonies dating back to early Edo period, the foothills of Higashiyama mountains along the way to Kiyomizu-dera Temple have long been home to some of the country’s best ceramic artisans, who would produce the wares for tea masters from nearby temples. The art of Kiyomizu-yaki, Kyoto’s Kiyomizu pottery making, remains a popular handicraft today.
Try your hand at pottery making Kyoto-style with a ceramic lesson from one of the city’s established studios. You can choose to make your very own creation from scratch using a potter’s wheel. Or if you feel more artistic, attend a ceramic painting workshop, where unglazed, ready-made ceramic items await to be decorated. In both cases, your items will be finished in the kiln and shipped directly to your home.
