A Quieter Día de Muertos
Mexico’s best-known Día de Muertos celebrations are city-scale: parades, crowds, cemeteries lit until dawn. The Costalegre offers the other version. Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo sits within a 3,000-acre private reserve where copal is gathered from the trees that scent the ofrenda, and marigolds are cut the morning they are placed. Three unhurried days: candlelit altars above Majahua Beach, Temazcal at first light and Latin American cooking at Coyul.

Mexico’s Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a vibrant, multi-day celebration honouring loved ones who have passed. Blending ancient Indigenous rituals with Catholic traditions, it takes place from October 31 to November 2, featuring altars (ofrendas), marigolds, candles and favourite foods to welcome spirits home.
A Day of the Dead altar honours the four elements: water, earth, wind and fire. Water, traditional sweet bread (pan de muerto), colourful paper banners (papel picado) and candles each represent one of these elements, while marigolds and copal incense help guide loved ones home. Guests are invited to add a photograph to our altar in remembrance of someone special.
Pan de muerto is a traditional orange-scented sweet bread baked exclusively for Día de Muertos. Topped with a signature cross of dough shaped like bones and a dusting of sugar, it is traditionally placed on the ofrenda and enjoyed with hot chocolate. It is available at Coyul throughout the three-day celebration.
