Peace and Quiet in Las Vegas:
How to Unplug in Sin City

A closer look at Las Vegas, city of bright lights and infinite indulgence, reveals its softer side. We asked local Four Seasons experts where to unwind. Here, eight relaxing experiences to round out your next trip.

Cabana Fever

“Our Hotel in itself is an oasis,” says Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas’ Chef Concierge Patrick Ritschard. “We share a building with Mandalay Bay, so the casino experience is right there, but you can easily return to the sanctuary of the Hotel at any time.” The well-appointed poolside cabanas, complete with ceiling fans, sofas, chilled towels and dedicated servers, are a favourite hideaway for guests. “We don’t have loud music at the pool, so it’s a haven of quiet,” Ritschard says. “Lots of people spend the day there.”

Ohm, What?

For a good stretch with a lofty view, try yoga in the High Roller Observation Wheel. This futuristic Ferris wheel sends you soaring 550 feet (168 metres) above ground in a glass-walled pod with room for a small group to follow the peaceful poses of a local instructor. “We recommend doing it right before dusk,” Ritschard says. “Las Vegas has some amazing sunsets.”

Refresher Course

What better way to wind down the day and recharge for the evening than with a proper tea? Afternoon tea at the Hotel’s poolside Veranda restaurant is an hour-long escape from hubbub, with finger sandwiches, scones and pastries prepared by French chef Jean-Luc Daul and his team. Every weekday in December, guests clad in holiday sweaters can sip a complimentary glass of Champagne paired with seasonal sweets like eggnog crème brûlée.

Red Rock Canyon

Stretch your legs at Red Rock Canyon, just west of the city.

Desert Aces

Vast canyons, vermilion sandstone peaks and spiny desert flora fill the Mojave Desert surrounding Las Vegas. Two spots to stretch your legs and breathe in some fresh air: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a 15-minute drive west of the city, and Valley of Fire State Park, an hour to the east. At Red Rock, take in the scenery on horseback, a bicycle or your own two feet – or with the top down on a 13-mile scenic roadway. Ancient trees, petroglyphs and otherworldly arches are among the treasures at Valley of Fire. Enhance either trip with a picnic lunch courtesy of Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas.

Seven Magic Mountains

Ugo Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains is set among desert scrubland in a clearing off Las Vegas’ Interstate 15.

Fine Art

“You can really get lost in the beautiful art experiences in Las Vegas,” Ritschard says. “James Turrell’s experiential exhibit, Akhob, inside the Louis Vuitton store, is all about light and space, and it’s by reservation only so it’s never overly crowded.” Another compelling installation: Ugo Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains, a series of three-storey towers composed of vibrantly painted boulders, set among desert scrubland in a clearing just 10 miles (16 kilometres) south of the Strip.

Schuss It Out

“A lot of people don’t realize there’s a ski resort here,” Ritschard says. In fact, Lee Canyon, 50 miles (80 km) from Vegas, offers 24 downhill skiing trails, plus a snow-tubing course and snowshoeing trails. “There are some beautiful hikes you can do there, year-round. And mountain-biking trails, too.”

Nurture by Nature

Set smack in the middle of Las Vegas, the non-profit Springs Preserve nature centre traces the city’s history while serving up sustainable ideas for its future – all via interactive exhibits fit for all ages. Stroll through the serene butterfly garden as the sprightly creatures fly freely around you, or wander the meandering botanical garden trail alongside hundreds of varieties of native plants.

5 Swoon-Worthy Summer Picnics

Does anything say summer quite like dining al fresco? Around the globe, Four Seasons hotels and resorts elevate the classic picnic with enchanting settings, appetizing adventures and inspired dishes.

Florence picnic

In a Clandestine Park

How better to enjoy this 15th-century palazzo and its gated gardens than with a picnic supplied by Four Seasons Hotel Firenze‘s Michelin-starred restaurant? “This experience is quintessentially Italian,” says Vito Mollica, Executive Chef and Director of Food and Beverage. “Our dishes are steeped in tradition, and Italians are known for eating outdoors on holidays.” Choose your setting – a grassy lawn shaded by centuries-old ginkgo trees, a secluded gazebo or a blanket by the park’s neoclassical temple – and pop open a bottle of Tolaini al Passo. The Tuscan red pairs well with a meal of artful dishes, from melon with shaved ham and airy asparagus frittatas to classic baci di dama biscuits made with hazelnuts.

Seychelles picnic

On a White-Sand Beach

A tropical lunch meets relaxed adventure at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island, a private isle ringed with nearly 9 miles (14.5 metres) of sugar-soft sands.

“This island is meant for exploring,” says Chef Olivier Barré, “and the picnic is a delicious excuse to pause and enjoy the view.” Guests can stroll or cycle to one of dozens of spots, on the edge of turquoise waters or shaded by coconut groves, that simply beg for a gingham blanket. Lunch, neatly packed into a bike-friendly wicker basket, is completely customizable, though bites like pesto chicken and local cassava or banana chips are perennial favourites, not to mention the kiwi Danishes. While you dine, keep an eye out for Aldabra giant tortoises – more than 100 live on the island.

Prague boat picnic

Aboard a Private Riverboat

Take in the Czech Republic capital’s sights – the iconic Charles Bridge, Prague Castle – aboard one of Four Seasons Hotel Prague‘s elegant wooden boats. Built by master craftsmen in Italy, the two vessels that sail the Vltava River are furnished with deep blue cushions and overseen by captains in crisp white suits. Begin the picnic with house-made pretzels (a guest favourite) and bottles of chilled Prosecco, followed by hearty salads and sandwiches stuffed with prosciutto di San Daniele or smoked salmon. “Guests see the city from a whole new angle,” says Chef Concierge Petr Zezula.

Vail picnic

On a Mountain Trek

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail launched its picnic program last summer and it’s back by popular demand. “The Colorado-inspired meals are a convenient addition to mountain biking or hiking adventures,” says Kate Allan, Guest Relations Supervisor. Guests can earn their lunch with a walk along one of the Four Seasons recommended routes, such as a hike to placid Piney Lake or a tour through aspen groves to scenic Booth Falls. The backpack spread includes a selection of portable delectables such as the Resort’s popular house-made granola and sandwiches of shaved meats – pancetta, calabrese and salami, among others – sourced from the state where you’re enjoying them.

Las Vegas heli-tour

After a Heli-Tour

This unparalleled picnic experience from Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas starts with a helicopter trip through the Valley of Fire, a 40,000-acre nature preserve known for its bright red Aztec sandstone. Guests have exclusive access to a private landing pad at the base of the Grand Canyon. Here, a picnic fit for royalty is presented: plates like ahi tuna crudo, Waygu beef carpaccio and blackened salmon salad, along with Champagne. The food gains relish from the backdrop: towering canyon walls and the winding Colorado River. “Travellers visit Las Vegas for myriad reasons, many never realizing the destination’s proximity to one of the seven natural wonders of the world,” says Hotel Manager Angelica Palladino. After this excursion, you won’t be likely to forget it.

Moment by Moment: 6 Tips for Planning a Picture-Perfect Wedding

Your wedding day is something you want to remember for all the right reasons. From flowers to food to photography, there are many elements that go into an event you and your guests will love. And often it’s the little things that have the biggest impact.

Who better to weigh in on what makes for a standout affair than those with a well-trained eye for “I do” details – our Four Seasons Weddings experts. Here, they offer up their tried-and-true advice for creating the celebration you’ve always imagined, whether you’re dreaming up a destination wedding or one closer to home.

1. Take Time for a “First Look”

Carving out a few minutes before the wedding for a “first look” is a great way to connect with your partner and take a breath before your ceremony begins. “The key to creating the perfect first look is keeping it truly private, meaning just the two of you and the photographer,” says Gerald Lim, the Catering Sales and Wedding Manager at Four Seasons Hotel Seattle.

Lim always recommends planning a first look with your photographer beforehand so you can choose just the right location. The first look above was captured at the Hotel’s infinity pool, with views overlooking the Olympic Mountains, the Seattle Great Wheel and Elliott Bay. The best time? “Sunsets are especially gorgeous in the summer in Seattle,” Lim says.

2. Let Your Ceremony Space Shine

When it comes to enhancing your ceremony space, let the time of day be your guide. The light-filled Aria event space at Four Seasons Hotel Toronto was a glorious sight for this opulent daytime wedding, with towering green and white floral arrangements that accented the airiness of the venue. Having an evening ceremony? Think candles, crystal and wedding flowers that pop.

Speaking of flowers, you don’t have to say goodbye to all that floral after you say “I do.” Lina Marchesano, Senior Catering Sales Manager at the Hotel, recommends making the most of your ceremony décor by repurposing flower arrangements or candles at your reception. “They can be the backdrop on your ceremony stage, then be moved behind your head table,” she says.“Or keep your ceremony stage and backdrop to highlight your cake or your sweet table.”

3. Work with Your Baker to Create a Cake That’s Uniquely You

A classic ballroom like the one at the manorial Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire is the perfect setting to experiment with a twist on the traditional, especially where guests least expect it. “Your cake can be the perfect opportunity to showcase your personality and passions,” says Emma Westacott, Wedding and Events Manager at the Hotel, who loved seeing the vision of bride Paula Rooney (who happens to be an award-winning florist) come to life with cake designer Krishanthi Armitt. Using bold colours and cascading flowers, the pair collaborated to create a statement piece that was one of the biggest highlights of the wedding. “Paula’s love of floristry is evident from the use of her favourite flowers on her cake,” Westacott says.

4. Don’t Forget the Personal Touches

While elements such as your wedding flowers, décor, and even your entertainment are definitely important, it’s the personal touches that guests will find most memorable. “The best way to personalize a wedding is to come up with unique ideas that reflect the couple’s interests and favourite things,” says Gus Tejeda, Director of Marketing for Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas. For Kalli and Andy, that definitely included their two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Bingley and Sherman.

Since the Hotel is pet-friendly, wedding planner Emily Reno with Weddings & Events by Emily suggested the dogs serve as ring bearers. “Bingley and Sherman sat with the couple as they got ready for the day and took wedding photos,” Tejeda says. “They even wore tuxedos and mini boutonnières.” After the ceremony, during dinner in the Acacia Ballroom, the pups went with a private dog sitter so Mom and Dad could enjoy the reception.

5. Capture the (Whole) Moment

Your wedding photos should be a pleasure to look at for a lifetime. Besides choosing a photographer whom you trust, it’s important to make sure that person knows how to take advantage of the destination – particularly one as awe-inspiring as Four Seasons Resort Nevis.

The right photographer will help you explore and highlight your surroundings, as Joy Marie Smallwood did for Katie and Jamie’s wedding photos. “Coming from Colorado, Katie and Jamie wanted to connect with the history and nature of their wedding destination,” says Sabrina Shelton, Conference Service Manager for the Resort. “They fell in love with the island from the moment they arrived and were intent on enjoying the entire resort, not just the beautiful beach where their ceremony took place.”

The couple and their photographer ventured out for photo ops throughout the Resort, including the fairway of the second hole on the golf course, with 17th-century sugar mill ruins as the backdrop. “There’s an incredible amount of geographic diversity here on Nevis and a lot of expansive views,” Shelton says. “A wide-angle lens is key to capturing the wonders of this magical island.”

6. Stop and Smell the Roses

Whether you’re dreaming of a lush garden ceremony filled with peonies or a sophisticated arrangement of calla lilies on your reception tables, your florist can help bring your blooming Pinterest boards to life. Accentuating your venue’s natural setting, as this couple did for their spectacular chuppah in the Wetherly Garden of Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, can create a gorgeous backdrop.

“Wetherly Garden is an oasis in the city, surrounded by European-style fountains, citrus, and succulents,” says Jennifer Rebello, the Hotel’s Director of Catering. “[The venue] lends itself to a variety of ceremony and floral styles, like contemporary, enchanted garden, traditional romantic, and rustic Napa style,” she says.

Rebello adds that the combination of mature landscaping and the Italian-tiled aisle often stimulates the creativity of florists and couples alike. “It [gives] our floral partners the creative freedom to design unique looks for our brides’ and grooms’ dream weddings.”
