Hawaii Helicopter Tour

Enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Hawaii during a helicopter tour of the Big Island. Children will love watching an active volcano spill lava into the ocean, or weaving through jungle-filled valleys.

For a carefree vacation, I love Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Kaupulehu, where kids and parents alike can have the holiday of their dreams. Because the Resort is only 15 minutes from the airport, as soon as you arrive, you’re there—it’s logistic nirvana—and the programming at the Resort is so extensive you don’t have to ever leave the grounds. If you do venture out, try the full-island Hualalai helicopter tour—our son loved watching bubbling lava flow into the ocean. Hupuna State Park is nearby, with long sandy beaches and water that’s ideal for body-boarding.

At the end of the day, we found ourselves happily lingering on the grounds of the Resort. Our son enjoyed watching turtles nest along the beach, and playing near the shops as the sun set. He learned to snorkel without leaving the property and spent Kid’s Night Out watching movies on the lawn while my husband and I enjoyed date night. We learned hula and lei-making as a family at the Kaupulehu Cultural Center—the perfect way to expose our child to a new culture and spend quality time together.

Activities galore in Hong Kong

Four Seasons Hong Kong Pool

A family vacation in thriving Hong Kong combines thrilling visits to theme parks for the kids with cultural learning experiences, plus time to relax at Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong and take in the iconic skyline from the outdoor pool.

Hong Kong is a surprisingly easy family travel destination. Public transportation is efficient, the airport is easy to navigate, and everything a family needs can be purchased within steps of Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong. While much of Hong Kong is a bustling city, there are plenty of opportunities to hike, enjoy the beach or spend time on the sea, so you can choose a pleasant mix of urban and outdoor activities for an active family. Two of the most popular family destinations are Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park, where kids can be kids and parents can score major cool points. If you prefer to skip the packed parks, head up to Big Buddha on a glass-bottom cable car, or take a ride on the new waterfront observation wheel at twilight to watch the city sparkle.

While many parents worry about the food options in Hong Kong, this shouldn’t dissuade those with even the pickiest of eaters. Kids love the petite dim sum, and if all else fails, pizza and burgers are available all over the city. We used many of the Hotel’s family amenities, including the outdoor pool deck, where complimentary popsicles and treats are passed around periodically. If the siren call of the watering holes at Lan Kwai Fong beckons, book a nanny through the Concierge. Otherwise, stay back in your Harbour View Room and watch the Symphony of Lights laser show over the water. Word to those still strollering: The city’s uneven pavement and unavoidable stairs make pushing your tiny tots a tiny hassle.

A resort hideaway in Sharm El Sheikh

Beaches of Sharm El Sheikh

Egypt’s most underrated attraction might be the stunning white-sand beaches of Sharm El Sheikh, which disappear into the turquoise waters of the Red Sea.

You don’t often hear the words “Egypt” and “children” spoken together in the travel sphere. Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh is an exception. From the moment we arrived at the Resort, we all felt at home. We spent most of our time at the property, which is large but well contained. Rooms feel like mini-cottages (with plunge pools in some!), and it only took a few hours for all of us to get to know the lay of the land.

Whether at the pool or on the beach, we enjoyed great views and attentive service, and the restaurants excelled at offering something for every palate. Mealtimes included options our children were familiar with as well as the chance to try new things, like the delicious Merguez sausage and hummus.

And the Resort’s Kids for All Seasons Club is small, but it makes up for its size with fun cultural activities, like learning to write your own name in hieroglyphics. The kids had to be pried away each day, and the talent show at the end of our stay had us all laughing. An unexpected perk of being at a Resort where there are many international travellers was that we made lasting friendships with other families.

Food and fun in Austin

Barbeque taco from Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ food truck in Austin, Texas

Make a trip to South Congress to try Austin’s amazing food trucks, so everyone in the family can try something they want—from freshly made doughnuts to Tex-Mex tacos.

Nominated by: Lori Lange of Recipe Girl

Austin is a terrific destination for active families. By far, the highlight of our trip was kayaking on Lady Bird Lake behind Four Seasons Hotel Austin. We loved cruising along together, and it was really cool to go under the bridge and hear the bats squeaking. If your children are a bit older, the Segway tour of Texas’ state capital is a great way to enjoy the city while keeping your child occupied and interested. (Be sure to check age restrictions.) And because the Hotel has so many amenities and fun things for the kids to do—they took part in the treasure hunt, played in the pool and watched bats at dusk—we were able to relax and soak in the sun.

Austin can be explored by your taste buds as well. One of the best ways to do this with kids is to try the food trucks of nearby South Congress. Children have fun running between options and trying unfamiliar cuisine, and you might even get them to fall in love with something new. The city also offers delicious tacos: Try the breakfast tacos at El Primo, or chow down at lunchtime on a Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ taco (both are food trucks), followed by one of Austin’s famous doughnuts. A personal favourite is Gourdough’s Donuts, where you can make a whole meal with variations on the tasty treats.

Interactive exploration in Lisbon

Algarve, Portugal

Renting a car is a great way to get out of Lisbon’s crowds and explore the Algarve, one of Portugal’s stunning natural wonders and a fun place for the kids to run along the sandy beaches or swim in the gentle surf.

Upon arrival, we did a motorcycle and sidecar tour of Lisbon, which offered a fun, interactive way to see the city and to get a sense of the history and soul of the place. Next, we explored on foot. Keep in mind the amount of walking you’ll do in the city: There are plenty of hills to climb and cobblestone walks to hike down, but if you stay at Four Seasons Hotel Lisbon a massage at the luxurious Spa will quickly loosen tired muscles after a long day on your feet.

The Hotel offers a great breakfast buffet, the perfect, hassle-free way to start each morning before exploring the city anew. Mix it up with trolley or taxi rides when the kids get tired, or rent a car. We explored coastal Algarve by car, taking in the deep turquoise waters with twisted rocks jutting out peacefully towards Africa, as well as exploring the nearby towns at Europe’s end. Car rentals offer the opportunity to get out of Lisbon and into the history and culture of Portugal’s more rural areas. And if all else fails, our kids loved to play in the warm sand or run laughing through the gentle surf on one of Portugal’s beautiful beaches.

A museum haven in Washington, DC
Nominated by: Liz Borod of Travelogged

Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC

A full day of exploration in Washington, DC—from introducing your child to the wonders of the world at a Smithsonian museum to taking in historical monuments—is best ended by relaxing in the comfort of your room at Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC.

Washington, DC, is like an educational version of Disney World because there are so many great attractions and things to see and do with kids. Visiting the Smithsonian Museums is a must: Our 3-year-old enjoyed the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum, and it was fun for us as parents to revisit those old favourites, too.

But the real highlight was the impressive Newseum, which looks at recent history through the lens of the media. Of course, after all of that museum-hopping, a trip or two around on the carousel at the National Mall is a perfect reward for good behaviour. After a busy day of sight-seeing, we were happy to go back and relax in our room at the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC, which is located in my favourite neighbourhood—Georgetown. Full of well-preserved Federalist architecture, Georgetown also has the best shopping and dining in the city. We managed to find time to stroll around the cobblestone streets, but my son had more fun back in the Hotel, enjoying the kid-friendly amenities.

A cultural introduction in Florence
Nominated by Amie O’Shaughnessy of Ciao Bambino

Four Seasons Hotel Firenze Park

Home to the largest private garden in Florence, Four Seasons Hotel Firenze offers an oasis in an otherwise crowded city: Admire architecture in the morning, and then spend the afternoon watching your children play outdoors back at the Hotel.

Florence is a busy metropolis, and the crowds and noise can be overwhelming. Luckily, Four Seasons Hotel Firenze has the largest private garden in the city—one of our favourite secluded hideaways, especially in summer. The oasis offers a pool; the vast garden itself, where the kids run; and a slice of calm and quiet without compromising proximity to Florence’s top sites.

From the Hotel, everything is walkable. My son loved climbing to the top of the Duomo and counting the 463 steps of the dark, ancient stairwell. The summit offers stunning panoramic views of Florence that are worth the climb, and gave our family one of our all-time favourite travel memories.

Although Florence is a city of Renaissance art and architecture, visiting with children offers the opportunity to see more of the parks, eat more delicious gelato and chow down on pizzas while experiencing the city’s attractions in an active, fun way. My son loved playing in the Santa Croce Piazza while we enjoyed superb people-watching in the shadow of the magnificent façade.

Endless excitement in Orlando
Nominated by: Colleen Padilla of Classy Mommy

Fun in Orlando

Orlando is not exactly a stranger to family fun. Earn a stream of smiles from your little ones at a theme park, or soak up the sun at the Resort pool, designed to be fun for both the young and the young at heart.

Orlando is a place worth visiting over and over again so that you can experience the many attractions while still allowing time to relax poolside at Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort. Easy transfers from the airport to the Resort make travelling to this destination logistical bliss with children.

My best advice for experiencing Orlando and Walt Disney World® Resort is not to try to do it all in one visit. You’ll exhaust yourself and the kids will be cranky. Instead, prioritise a few activities each day so that you feel accomplished rather than overwhelmed. And because the Resort has a private luxury bus to take your group to and from the Disney Theme Parks, you can schedule half-day visits to ensure there’s time left over to enjoy the Resort pool.

If you’re tired of lines, take your tots to the Resort’s Good Morning Breakfast with Goofy & His Pals, where you can get pictures with all the characters they love as well as score a nutritious meal. Once you’ve experienced everything there is to see and do at Walt Disney World®Magic Kingdom® Park, Epcot®Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios®, to name only a few of the must-see attractions—retreat back to Four Seasons and enjoy Explorer Island, a 5-acre (2-hectare) family playground. Complete with fountain-equipped splash zone, lakefront family pool, meandering lazy river for tubing, gaming arena, and courts for beach volleyball and basketball, Explorer Island has something for everyone.

Something for everyone in Los Angeles
Nominated by: Katie Dillon of La Jolla Mom

Natural History Museum of Los Angles

Encourage your child’s love of learning with a visit to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, where the Dinosaur Hall’s massive fossils will impress children of all ages.

LA has ample attractions to make for a lively family vacation: With Disneyland only an hour away, the La Brea Tar Pits not far afield, and some of the world’s prettiest beaches and Santa Monica Pier nearby, there is no shortage of ways to entertain children of all ages. For an all-out family vacation, hit the Los Angeles Zoo, Universal Studios and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, where your kids can learn as well as play. For more of a local perspective, try the American Girl Place at The Grove for lunch in the café before doing a bit of shopping on Rodeo and Robertson. The LACMA children’s gallery offers interactive art and a fun way to get creative with your children.

LA has the widest range of cultural activities in Southern California, and I’m always a fan of widening my daughter’s scope of interest and knowledge by exposing her to new things. Food in LA is easy for the young, who never seem to tire of the city’s creative kid’s menus. Or dine in at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills: The menu at Culina presents a vast number of choices, but if your child can’t find anything appealing, the Hotel can make something to suit his or her palate.

Beijing’s Craft Beer Scene

Charcoal brewpub in Beijing

Locals and visitors can enjoy Arrow Factory Brewing’s extensive selection at Charcoal, the company’s newest outpost.

Craft beer and Chinese culture: It’s an alluring combination that’s easily assembled in modern Beijing. Today, the city has seen a proliferation of brewpubs and microbreweries, many of them located in hutongs (alleyways) that capture the traditional spirit of China’s capital city. These establishments incorporate typically Chinese ingredients such as chrysanthemum tea, cinnamon and Sichuan peppercorns, and give their beers exotic names—Zombie Pirate Ale, Hop God 120, Flying Fist, the Man with the Golden Hop.

But these brewpubs are also focused businesses, founded by individuals dedicated to making the kind of unadulterated, unpressurised beer that was once nearly impossible to find in Beijing. The beers are tasty and reasonably priced, the food delicious, the surroundings convivial, and the patrons generally friendly folk who appreciate finely crafted brews. Here’s a taste of four places pouring Beijing’s best craft beers.

Four Seasons Hotel Beijing

Great Leap Brewing Co.

The original brewpub courtyard location of Great Leap Brewing is situated in a particularly hard-to-find hutong. According to Great Leap Brewing founder Carl Setzer, the challenge of finding the place is as much a part of the fun as the humble environment that greets guests once they arrive: “It is such a great walk finding it, and on a good day it is great to sit outside there in the courtyard, shaded by trees, drinking a pint,” he says.

Great Leap Brewing built on its pioneering hutong-location success by opening a purpose-built downtown brewpub, close to the nightlife zone of Sanlitun and, more recently, an outlet located only a short walk from Four Seasons Hotel Beijing. Both pubs have up to 20 beers on tap nightly, ranging from lighter lagers to heavy, porter-style brews, offerings that are consumed by an enthusiastic mixture of Chinese and expatriate drinkers. Setzer recommends the Honey Ma Gold, an exemplary Chinese craft beer with peppercorn and date honey, or the Little General IPA, made with hops from Qingdao.

Jing-A Brewing Co.

Founders Kristian Li and Alex Acker are an especially convivial duo who regularly organise fun events at their brewery’s Sanlitun premises. The Jing-A carte rotates regularly and, on any given night, might include Workers’ Pale Ale, Black Velvet Vanilla Stout, Lucky 8 Lager and Guizhou Smoked Chili Porter. Among its regular offerings is the Airpocalypse Double IPA, whose price is linked to the city’s notoriously poor air: When the pollution index goes up, the price goes down.

Jing-A started as a home-brew operation, and the reaction to their original beers proved so positive that Li and Acker opened a full-fledged brewery, using locally sourced ingredients such as osmanthus flower, peppercorn and hawthorn berries. “It was our dream to brew tasty, artisanal, small-batch beers in a variety of styles, using only the best ingredients,” says Li, a Canadian who has lived in Beijing for more than 15 years.

He and Acker later discovered a converted factory compound, now home to their recently opened taproom. The complex also contains an art gallery, a restaurant and ample outdoor space for al fresco imbibing during spring and summer evenings.

Slow Boat Brewery and Taproom

Slow Boat Brewery is run by American Chandler Jurinka, another long-term resident of Beijing, who brews ales such as Monkey’s Fist IPA, Man-o-War Porter and Dragon Boat Ale. Real ales were almost impossible to find on draft in Beijing until a few years ago; now his are highly rated by connoisseurs of the real thing.

The microbrewery, which takes its name from the song “Slow Boat to China,” has a production facility outside of Beijing that produced the equivalent of 485,000 U.S. pints last year. Its ales can be found in many bars and restaurants in the sprawling city, with more than 15 available daily at the brewery’s taproom—which also offers upscale pub food and a Sunday brunch. Jurinka, whose personal favourite is the Captain’s Pale Ale, plans to open an outlet in Sanlitun later this year.

Arrow Factory Brewing

Arrow Factory Brewing staff in Beijing

For more than eight years, English-born Will Yorke has been quenching Beijing’s thirst for quality beers with his ever-expanding Arrow Factory Brewing company.

English-born Will Yorke opened and ran a kung fu school, worked as a teacher, and became a DJ before he finally found his niche as a restaurateur and brewer. “Coming from the U.K., I have been more prone the English bitter, but we are working for a market that requires a wide spread, so we have a much wider range,” he says. “We have always been serious about making beer, even when it was on a small scale, but now we have ratcheted up the level of seriousness.”

Today, Yorke has six locations in Beijing that serve naturally brewed beer, including his original Vineyard Café on Wudaoying Hutong; another nearby bistro, Stuff’d; and the Vineyard Café by the River, located within easy reach of the Hotel. Charcoal, another brewpub from Yorke created to brew large batches of natural ale, recently opened on the same site as Arrow Factory. Offerings here include the Pilgrim’s Progress Amber Ale, Guanxi Pale Ale, Longbow Men Session Ale and Dark Ages Rye Lager.

A Mangrove Tour in Langkawi

Close your eyes and picture a wildlife safari. What do you see? My guess is that the images dancing through your mind involve Africa’s Big Five – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffaloes – and not the region’s lesser-known Little Five, a contingent of smaller-statured wildlife that includes rhinoceros beetles and elephant shrews.

I had expectations of grandeur myself as I travelled just off the northwest coast of Malaysia and prepared to embark on the Mangrove and Eagles Safari, an Extraordinary Experience on offer at Four Seasons Resort Langkawi. But I soon discovered, amid mangroves and dense geoforests, that observing wildlife on a smaller scale can be just as exhilarating as catching sight of a majestic lion stalking across the Serengeti.

Aerial view of Langkawi mangroves

Langkawi’s labyrinth of mangroves house sea caves, millions-year-old rock formations and myriad wildlife.

The more modest specimens in question here include fish, birds, monkeys and those known by local guides as Langkawi’s Flying Five: airborne lemurs, lizards, frogs, tree snakes and squirrels. They’re just as alluring and elusive as megafauna, and certainly as impressive if you have the chance to see them up close.

Langkawi is the largest in an archipelago of 99 islands, most of them technically sea stacks born some 550 million years ago of tectonic plate movement. Upon these porous limestone rocks today, thick geoforests make for stunning scenery and, more importantly, host a unique ecosystem and range of wildlife. Brushing the Andaman Sea and nestled into the forest on the northern shore of Langkawi is the Resort, the perfect access point to Langkawi’s Kilim Karst Geoforest Park (part of the UNESCO-protected Langkawi Geopark) and the place where our enlightening wildlife adventure begins.

We meet our guide, Farouk, in the Resort’s Geopark Discovery Centre. After a brief introduction to the park and the Resort’s efforts to aid conservation, we board our boat, a motorised Malay pinas, straight off the beach. Bouncing along the shoreline, we get a close-up view of one of the sea stacks, which looms over us as we glide by. It’s a curious sight: sheer walls, thick with foliage, sprouting from the sea.

Up ahead the mangroves come into view, and we slow to a crawl to prevent our wake from damaging the delicate shorelines. Still on open water, we edge up to the fringes of the forest, and on the muddy waterfront Farouk points out fiddler crabs, mudskippers and, in the water, needlefish. As we crane over the side of the boat to get photos, he explains how important the mangroves are to the archipelago; more than 60 percent of the area’s marine life depends on this habitat.

Four Seasons Resort Langkawi Geopark Discovery Centre exterior

Experience the wonder of South Asia’s first UNESCO Geopark at the Resort’s Geopark Discovery Centre, featuring exhibition boards, interactive presentations and authentic displays.

It’s not long before a group of macaques, curious about their new neighbours and likely on the hunt for a free feed, emerge from the branches. Farouk tells us the monkeys are, as one might expect, intelligent creatures unfazed by human contact, even known to board tour boats at times. Farouk is a delightful, animated guide, filling us in on animal behaviour and anecdotes from his excursions. Many of the monkeys, he says, recognise him and adapt their behaviour accordingly, sometimes challenging him for alpha male status.

Macaque in Langkawi

Curious macaques are among the many species of local wildlife you’ll spot during the safari.

Now fully surrounded by mangroves, our boat rounds a bend and enters a broad stretch of brackish water over which white-bellied sea eagles and Brahminy Kites, whose name in Malay gives Langkawi its name, swoop and dive to catch titbits from a feeder boat.

Farouk takes us farther up the river, where it narrows to such an extent that mangroves brush the sides of the boat. We’re in the thick of action here, the sun only dappling the water as we glide through. Someone spots a snake on a branch, but we’re assured it’s at a safe distance; later on a lizard, 2 feet long from nose to tail, breaks from the bank and swims out in front of our bow. We’re thoroughly immersed in this fascinating tropical environment.

Farouk has one more treat up his sleeve for us before we make our way home: We pass through a ravine and into a tunnel-like cave. Not until he switches his torch on and points it upwards do we see that the ceiling is crowded with sleeping bats.

As we skip over the sea back to the Resort, I reflect on the creatures we’ve seen in this unique environment and those that have eluded us, including the Flying Five—that’s the chance you take when you look for animals in their natural habitat. I’m sure of one thing: I’ll have to return.

Toast to good taste from a hidden wine cellar in Paris

Four Seasons Paris wine cellar experience

As a recent guest at Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, I was fortunate enough to join the ranks of an exclusive group of oenophiles who have travelled the 14 metres (46 feet) below ground to tour the Hotel’s legendary wine cellar. Over candlelit French canapés and a glass of Burgundy Pinot Noir, I took in the fascinating history of the George V cellar and sampled from a choice selection of the 50,000-bottle collection of rare wines, which includes a bottle of Terrantez from 1795 and a bottle of (drinkable!) port that dates back to 1900. With a set-up this romantic and picture perfect, it’s not surprising that the cellar sees its fair share of marriage proposals. See more from my glamorous stay in the City of Light, including a tour of the Hotel’s legendary penthouse, on The Road Les Traveled.

Exploring Mumbai With a Dabbawala

The Mumbai train system is the lifeblood of this metropolis. It nourishes the city by pumping commuter trains full of citizens through its arteries to all of their destinations. More than 7.5 million commuters crowd its coaches every day, making this one of the busiest rapid transit systems in the world.

On a humid winter morning, I arrive at Churchgate railway station, one of the system’s critical nexuses. At any given moment, trains glide in and out of a dark, bustling train terminus, picking up and dropping off people from every tier of life in Mumbai, from office workers to students to merchants to executives. Standing with Valencia Albuquerque, Concierge of Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai, I watch as tides of vibrant colours spill on and off of the trains and spread in every direction.

Two Mumbai dabbawalas carry their customers' lunch pails

Mumbai’s dabbawalas pick up fresh meals from their clients’ homes each day before delivering the containers to their workplace in time for lunch.

As the sea of commuters begins to clear, I also notice passengers dressed head to toe in white and unloading assortments of cylindrical tiffin boxes. These are the city’s dabbawalas, highly specialised workers whose sole task is to ensure that meals originating from homes all around Mumbai reach their owners safely at lunchtime.

The dabbawala system is a reflection of the Mumbai that surrounds it: incredibly organised chaos. – Zach Glassman

More than a century of history

This unique system originated in the late 1800s, when there were very few restaurants in Mumbai, and fewer still to cater to a new class of commuting workers. As a matter of urgency and practicality, a new delivery system developed in which dabbawalas—literally “carriers of boxes”—stepped into the breach to bring warm lunches to the workers in every family.

Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai

Today, thousands upon thousands of deliveries are made to offices around Mumbai. The dabbawalas, part of a tradition that began about 125 years ago, are the packers and messengers for hungry office workers all over the metropolis.

Experiencing lunch in Mumbai

It was at Churchgate station that I met Dyaneshwar Paangare, whom I would be shadowing for the day through the Lunch Like a Local Extraordinary Experience, available exclusively through Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai. While I didn’t actually assist the dabbawalas in the sorting and final delivery of their shipments—several botched deliveries might have resulted if I had tried my hand—I did gain understanding of this complex system and its various moving parts. The explanations from both Albuquerque and Paangare helped me appreciate the amount of work and precision required for the delivery of a single dabba (box).

From beginning to end, each meal changes hands at least five times. Every tiffin box has an alphanumeric code (some written more clearly than others) from which a dabbawala can ascertain the origin, the destination and other crucial information. With great interest and countless questions, I followed Paangare from Churchgate to a delivery at his final destination (Mafatlal Centre, an office building in Nariman Point).

A complex system

In an age when nearly all logistics have moved to electronic coding and tracking, it was fascinating to see a system that appeared so haphazard and yet worked with astounding accuracy and efficiency. The system relies entirely on human processing, from the cooking of each meal to the reading of each individual tiffin box to the physical delivery of each parcel. And it operates nearly flawlessly, with errors being reported so rarely that the rate of successful deliveries is close to 100 percent. The dabbawala system is a reflection of the Mumbai that surrounds it: incredibly organised chaos.

My immersion in the world of dabbawalas served as the best possible introduction to the city’s train system, and to the Fort and Nariman Point areas of Mumbai. Once the delivery was complete, I returned to the Hotel, where a warm vegetarian tiffin box awaited my attention. Though my own lunch might not have arrived from a faraway corner of Mumbai, I was able to unwind and enjoy some delicious food with a new-found comprehension of the craft, customs and systems behind this daily ritual.
