FAQ
Autumn in Beijing is September to November and is the city’s clearest, driest season. Summer humidity gives way to sunny days; warm early-autumn afternoons cool to single digits by November, while the ginkgo avenues and Fragrant Hills turn gold. Four Seasons Hotel Beijing, in the Chaoyang district, makes the perfect central base for the season.
Golden Week is the week-long national holiday that begins with China National Day on October 1. It’s Beijing’s busiest travel period, and tickets for the Forbidden City and major museums sell out days ahead and prices rise across the city. Booking well in advance is essential, and our Concierge can arrange reservations, quieter visiting times and private Great Wall experiences away from the busiest sections.
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the full moon in September or early October each year. Families can admire the moon and share mooncakes, the festival’s traditional pastry. Cai Yi Xuan, our Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, marks the season with mooncakes and festive menus.
September brings warm days, around 25 degrees C (77 F) with cool evenings. October is crisp and clear, typically 10 to 20 degrees C (50 to 68 F), and by November daytime temperatures drop to single figures with the first winter chill. Rain is scarce and autumn brings some of the city’s clearest skies of the year, with only layers and a warm coat needed for exploring the city.
The Fragrant Hills in the northwestern part of the city are famous for red autumn leaves, usually peaking from late October to mid-November. Ditan Park’s historic ginkgo avenue turns gold in the same window, along with the grounds of the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace. Our Concierge can arrange visits at the best times.
Yes, autumn is one of the most rewarding times to visit Beijing. The weather is clear and comfortable, the city’s parks and hills are at their most colourful, and the season brings both the Mid-Autumn Festival and Golden Week. Outside the holidays themselves, crowds at major sites are also smaller than in summer. We invite you to explore our seasonal celebrations.
