Rodeo Drive. New Bond Street. Via Montenapoleone. Fifth Avenue. Many of the world’s most desirable shopping districts have maintained their status (and high rents) for generations. Newcomers, let alone ones built almost from scratch, rarely break into that elite circle. Yet that’s exactly what the Miami Design District has accomplished since its beginnings in the 1990s. “When I started, you know, 25 years ago, it was an abandoned area,” says the district’s developer, Craig Robins, who is also a co-founder of the annual Design Miami fair.

The 16-acre walkable neighbourhood of restaurants and luxury stores has pulled off that feat by following a distinctive playbook: placing art and design installations at nearly every turn, from Buckminster Fuller’s whimsical Fly’s Eye Dome to artist Alteronce Gumby’s vibrant mural Living the Dream, 2024, composed of gemstones (green jade, turquoise), stained glass, and mosaic tiles. Robins says the goal is to offer visitors a sense of discovery, variety, and, ideally, joy. “It gives people a different connection to the place than if it just looked like everywhere else,” he explains. He likens the district to a museum with a permanent collection and rotating exhibitions, like artist Katie Stout’s recent design commission, Gargantua’s Thumb, a series of nearly a dozen cartoonish faux-marble animals in the form of benches. Also worth checking out is the private art collection of Dacra (Robins’s development company), located inside the historic 1926 Buick building and available to visit by appointment.

Recent restaurant openings include the eight-seat omakase spot Yasu and Le Specialità, an outpost of the Milan trattoria, while the district has recently welcomed new or renovated flagships from Rolex, Miu Miu, Fendi, David Yurman, Saint Laurent, Bulgari, and Cartier (located in a sculptural glass building by Diller Scofidio + Renfro that’s inspired by a 1909 brooch). For those looking to navigate the district’s more than 170 boutiques with ease, Four Seasons Hotel Miami offers guests complimentary tours led by expert personal shoppers.
