Mardi Gras season officially begins on Twelfth Night (January 6) and culminates on Fat Tuesday on March 4, 2025.
While the main festivities occur in the two weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras season lasts several weeks. Plan your stay to enjoy multiple parades and celebrations.
Fat Tuesday is the grand finale of Mardi Gras, with massive parades, street parties and colourful costumes filling the city.
Mardi Gras celebrations are citywide, but the largest parades take place along St. Charles Avenue and Canal Street, and in the French Quarter.
Mardi Gras, or “Shrove Tuesday,” has roots in French Catholic traditions brought to Louisiana in the 18th century. Today, it’s a unique cultural celebration with parades, costumes and revelry.
The typical temperatures during Mardi Gras can range from 10 to 20 degrees C (50 to 68 F), with occasional rain. Pack layers, comfortable walking shoes, a raincoat and festive attire to fully enjoy the parades.
