Our nature reserve spans 1,214 hectares (3,000 acres) and features 10 kilometres (6 miles) of coastline, making it an incomparable setting for discovery and freedom. With a deep respect for the environment (only 2% of the reserve is developed), we serve as the guardians of this vast natural sanctuary and as your guides to it. Our activities have been personally curated to allow you to experience this utopia and define the Tamarindo experience. A Taste of Tamarindo
Led by our Culinary Director, Nicolás Piatti, our culinary workshops are immersed in Mexican cuisine and traditions. Learn about recipes passed down through generations and fresh produce such as blue agave from Rancho Ortega, our low-impact farm. Piatti and his team also bring organic corn from the Yucatán Peninsula and harvest salt. Each of our workshops serve to tell a story – of a place, traditions and ingredients – and are soulful expressions of Mexico’s culinary heritage.![]()
Discovery Centre
Tamarindo has been home to a team of researchers and biologists for almost three decades, documenting and protecting the inner workings of our nature reserve and its wildlife. Our Discovery Centre is where guests can access the team’s passion for learning and tap into their knowledge, exploring freely whenever interest strikes. It’s also a home base from which Four Seasons guides can take you bird watching, snorkelling to identify local sea life, and much more.![]()
Go Bird Watching
Our resident biologists and their teams will guide you through one of the largest private nature reserves in Mexico in search of rare bird life. Tamarindo is a true paradise for experiencing a natural encounter, with 13 endemic species flying over the reserve throughout the day. The team will take you to secret areas where the jungle comes alive with the sounds and colours of tropical birds in the late afternoon. Small Wonders Safari
Some of the most impressive scenes that you will witness during your stay in Tamarindo may require you to crouch down and stare intently at a leaf or the bark of a tree, where the unexpected drama of the insect world unfolds. During this after-dark adventure, our in-house insect expert and nature explorer, Dr. Pavel Kirillov, will lead you across the reserve, searching for its smallest inhabitants. Learn about the organizational skills of soldier ants, the camouflage abilities of caterpillars and the intriguing shapes of treehoppers. And if you are fascinated by colourful butterflies, the experience is also available during the day, when these flying beauties are making the rounds. Bring your camera, long pants and long sleeves to protect your arms and legs from mosquito bites. Guests ages 7 and older are welcome.

Macro-Photography Scuba Tour
Just steps from Tamarindo Beach, a unique variety of marine life awaits, including colourful fish, shrimp and even peculiar molluscs called nudibranchs, who live underwater on rock formations. Test your skills as a nature photographer and dive into a new world on our macro-photography scuba tour. Back on dry land, you can send your photos to a crowdsourcing platform that collects ocean imagery for scientific research.![]()

Caramelo: Inspire a Sense of Wonder
Tamarindo is a school of nature, full of wonders and possibilities for fun and discovery. At Caramelo, our Kids For All Seasons activity area, kids will find out how to identify birds and discover where eggs come from, make juice from the fruit they pick themselves and learn about the littlest creatures and the tallest trees. The stars of Caramelo are Nacho and Lola, our resident explorers, who will guide our little travellers through experiences that inspire play, exploration and education. Escondite: Not just a space, but an identity
Escondite, designed alongside our consultant Marco, aged 13, is a hideaway with the latest technology and the freedom of our vast reserve. Teen guests will find their own refuge and identity in this space, created for connection and adventure, where nature and energy set the stage for lifelong friendships and memories.
Meet the Team
Paco León
Resident BiologistRecognizing guests by name is a pillar of Four Seasons anticipatory service. Francisco Javier León González, better known as “Paco,” manages it just fine, though as our resident biologist, his focus is more on arrivals with four legs, feathers and fins. Paco and his team will lead guests through the reserve, opening eyes to animal tracks, ears to calls and birdsongs and noses to the scents of flowers. Ask him anything about the reserve’s reptiles, birds, mammals or the more than 70 endemic species of flora and fauna. If you catch Paco at his desk (a rare scene) you might have a look at his “jar of creatures” – a collection he's been nurturing since he landed in Tamarindo.
