Where nature replenishes the soul and inspires new adventure
Our nature reserve spans 1,214 hectares (3,000 acres) and features 10 kilometres (6 miles) of coastline, making it an incomparable setting for discovery and freedom. With a deep respect for the environment (only 2% of the reserve is developed), we serve as the guardians of this vast natural sanctuary and as your guides to it. Our activities have been personally curated to allow you to experience this utopia and define the Tamarindo experience. Here, time goes by more slowly, and each moment of exploration brings you closer to everything and everyone around you.
Feel at One With NatureStart your day by awakening your senses and feeling the rhythm of the nature reserve. Join our team of resident biologists and researchers on a morning hike through hills and winding paths. In a destination where there are more animal footpaths than human footpaths, you’ll gain an intimate knowledge of this tropical seasonal jungle. This walk, a Tamarindo tradition, will grant you an insider’s peek into the biologists’ work to study and protect the reserve’s natural treasures as you experience your surroundings with all your senses.
A Taste of TamarindoLed by our Culinary Director, Nicolás Piatti, our culinary workshops are immersed in Mexican cuisine and traditions. Learn about recipes passed down through generations and fresh produce such as blue agave from Rancho Ortega, our low-impact farm. Piatti and his team also bring organic corn from the Yucatán Peninsula and harvest salt. Each of our workshops serve to tell a story – of a place, traditions and ingredients – and are soulful expressions of Mexico’s culinary heritage.
Discovery CentreTamarindo has been home to a team of researchers and biologists for almost three decades, documenting and protecting the inner workings of our nature reserve and its wildlife. Our Discovery Centre is where guests can access the team’s passion for learning and tap into their knowledge, exploring freely whenever interest strikes. It’s also a home base from which Four Seasons guides can take you bird watching, snorkelling to identify local sea life, and much more.
Go Bird WatchingOur resident biologists and their teams will guide you through one of the largest private nature reserves in Mexico in search of rare bird life. Tamarindo is a true paradise for experiencing a natural encounter, with 13 endemic species flying over the reserve throughout the day. The team will take you to secret areas where the jungle comes alive with the sounds and colours of tropical birds in the late afternoon. Patience and curiosity are essential when it’s up to nature to put on the show.
Run FreeDiscover the hills, flats, jungle paths and ocean views of our private nature reserve with the freedom and joy of running alongside our Run Concierge. Take a break at Dorado Beach and watch the waves roll onto the sand, or pause to take in the greatness of the trees that surround you.
Ethnobotanical WalkOur resident biologists will guide you along the reserve on this fascinating Ethnobotany Walk, where you can learn all about nature’s healing powers. Discover the incredible world of plants and unveil the medicinal power that pre-Hispanic Mexican cultures use for healing.
Hike in NatureEnjoy panoramic views of our tropical seasonal jungle during an athletic hike varying in distance and speed – the ultimate natural workout.
Small Wonders SafariSome of the most impressive scenes that you will witness during your stay in Tamarindo may require you to crouch down and stare intently at a leaf or the bark of a tree, where the unexpected drama of the insect world unfolds. During this after-dark adventure, our in-house insect expert and nature explorer, Dr. Pavel Kirillov, will lead you across the reserve, searching for its smallest inhabitants. Learn about the organizational skills of soldier ants, the camouflage abilities of caterpillars and the intriguing shapes of treehoppers. And if you are fascinated by colourful butterflies, the experience is also available during the day, when these flying beauties are making the rounds. Bring your camera, long pants and long sleeves to protect your arms and legs from mosquito bites. Guests ages 7 and older are welcome.
Oceanic ExplorationsOur unique location means that marine birds, dolphins and even humpback whales call these waters their home. The deep, secluded bays of Tamarindo have always been a place where sea mammals come to teach their young. Experience whales and dolphins up close, watching nature work its magic, as we ensure our coastline remains healthy and vibrant. Our water activities are the perfect opportunity to explore this incredible ocean as we honour the creatures that live in it.
A Moment of Pause on the PacificHead out on an adventure with the local fishermen of La Manzanilla, who have lived on these shores for generations and know them better than anyone. Aboard their traditional lancha (fishing boat), listen to their stories about the ocean and the creatures that live in it, and learn the secrets of handline fishing, a sustainable fishing practice, from the very best. As you roll along the ocean, you will gain a unique understanding of local culture – and perhaps a few new friends. On this special fishing trip, time is counted not in minutes but in waves.
Macro-Photography Scuba TourJust steps from Tamarindo Beach, a unique variety of marine life awaits, including colourful fish, shrimp and even peculiar molluscs called nudibranchs, who live underwater on rock formations. Test your skills as a nature photographer and dive into a new world on our macro-photography scuba tour. Back on dry land, you can send your photos to a crowdsourcing platform that collects ocean imagery for scientific research.
Take to the WaterWhen you hear the ocean calling, there are plenty of ways to answer. Head out on a snorkelling journey, or take a water bike, kayak or paddleboard and uncover the treasures in these tranquil waters. Along Tamarindo’s 10 kilometres (6 miles) of stunning coastline, you’ll encounter cliffs, beaches, islands and granite formations, offering awe-inspiring views at every turn.
For Kids and Teens
Caramelo: Inspire a Sense of WonderTamarindo is a school of nature, full of wonders and possibilities for fun and discovery. At Caramelo, our Kids For All Seasons activity area, kids will find out how to identify birds and discover where eggs come from, make juice from the fruit they pick themselves and learn about the littlest creatures and the tallest trees. The stars of Caramelo are Nacho and Lola, our resident explorers, who will guide our little travellers through experiences that inspire play, exploration and education. Every evening, Caramelo offers a curated program of activities for our youngest and most curious minds, while parents can enjoy the unique culinary experiences of Tamarindo.
Escondite: Not just a space, but an identityEscondite, designed alongside our consultant Marco, aged 13, is a hideaway with the latest technology and the freedom of our vast reserve. Teen guests will find their own refuge and identity in this space, created for connection and adventure, where nature and energy set the stage for lifelong friendships and memories.
Meet the Team
Paco LeónResident Biologist
Recognizing guests by name is a pillar of Four Seasons anticipatory service. Francisco Javier León González, better known as “Paco,” manages it just fine, though as our resident biologist, his focus is more on arrivals with four legs, feathers and fins. Paco and his team will lead guests through the reserve, opening eyes to animal tracks, ears to calls and birdsongs and noses to the scents of flowers. Ask him anything about the reserve’s reptiles, birds, mammals or the more than 70 endemic species of flora and fauna. If you catch Paco at his desk (a rare scene) you might have a look at his “jar of creatures” – a collection he's been nurturing since he landed in Tamarindo.
“Our mission is to share nature in order to protect nature – helping future generations learn how to ‘rewild’ the land to preserve all the endemic fauna, flora and animal species.”
