Joseph Dirand\u2019s style mixes architectural minimalism with luxe materials and dramatic lighting, from his Belle Epoque\u2013inspired interiors for the Parisian hot spot Le Grand Caf\u00e9 to his design of boutiques for Balmain and Givenchy.\u00a0That same sensibility informs the French architect and interior designer\u2019s work for Four Seasons.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

Over more than a decade, Joseph Dirand Architecture has renovated a pair of properties with little in common: a 1930s beach club in greater Miami and a Swiss mountain retreat in Gstaad. This is by design. \u201cI love that maximum contrast,\u201d Dirand says. \u201cThere is a sense of discovery, and a feeling that I\u2019m not repeating myself.\u201d He looks for hotels that feel rooted to their location, where he can let culture and history shape the architecture and design.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

That approach defines his best-known work for the brand, Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club<\/a>, in Surfside, Florida, where his Art Deco\u2013meets\u2013mid-century interiors, completed in 2017, perform a high-wire design act, bridging the Mediterranean Revival architecture of the historic clubhouse with the crisp form of Richard Meier\u2019s contemporary tower in glass, concrete, and steel. He has since designed interiors for Four Seasons Seaway at The Surf Club, his first residential project, and a beach villa at The Surf Club.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Next year, Dirand\u2019s interiors for a Swiss ski enclave\u2019s grande dame, originally opened in 1910, will make their debut. The Park Gstaad, A Four Seasons Hotel<\/a>, will offer 75 guest rooms and suites; a collection of sophisticated, chalet-inspired Private Residences; indoor and outdoor pools; and a Clinique La Prairie spa.<\/p>\r\n

Addison Mizner<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

Before designing The Surf Club interiors, Dirand toured Mediterranean Revival structures in Boca Raton and Palm Beach, Florida, including houses by Mizner, one of the era\u2019s leading architects. Studying them helped shape Dirand\u2019s goal: translating that period\u2019s glamour so that it feels up-to-date. \u201cI wanted to take that inspiration and turn it into something that would appeal to a younger crowd\u2014playful and sexy.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Terra-cotta Tile<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

For The Surf Club\u2019s public spaces, Dirand had the property\u2019s 1930s terra-cotta tile reproduced, sourcing it from the Italian company Antica Fornace Carraro. \u201cThey are still doing it the same way they used to, everything by hand and dried in the sun,\u201d he says. \u201cThe charm is in the imperfections. That kind of craftmanship is a big part of what I do.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Ateliers Saint-Jacques & Fonderie de Coubertin<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

Dirand enlisted the French workshop\u2014whose projects have included the restoration of the original gilded royal gate at Versailles\u2014to produce The Surf Club\u2019s Champagne Bar, which is made from lava stone with a fluted surface in green enamel and topped with a white crackle-glazed surface resembling porcelain. \u201cThey are the absolute master of craftmanship.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Saarinen Executive Side Chair<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

A fan of the 1960s classic chair by Eero Saarinen for Knoll, Dirand is drawn to its wooden legs and what he calls its \u201ctropical and organic\u201d shape. \u201cIt\u2019s an extremely comfortable chair.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Pompeii<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

For a current project\u2014a house in Capri\u2014Dirand has been collecting books on Pompeii, studying how objects from jewellery to door frames to tiles were composed and coloured. It\u2019s part of what he describes as a \u201cresearch ritual\u201d for each new project: a \u201cdeep source hunt\u201d for the culture and history that make a design feel true to its place.<\/p>\r\n

John Pawson<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

Dirand cites the British minimalist architect\u2014whose projects have ranged from the Design Museum in London to the bronze-and-granite Lake Crossing bridge at Kew Gardens\u2014as a foundational influence from his student years. \u201cThe radicalism of his work was at the time something very important to me,\u201d he says. Though still inspired by Pawson\u2019s work, Dirand finds new visual ideas everywhere, especially during his travels. \u201cI\u2019m trying to be more open.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Le Grand Caf\u00e9<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

In 2025, Dirand\u2019s design for the new restaurant inside the Grand Palais (the Beaux Arts monument near Paris\u2019s Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es) made its debut. His glammed-up version of a traditional French brasserie\u2014velvet banquettes, wood paneling, and patinated mirrors together with tables surrounded by flowering plants on an outdoor colonnade\u2014quickly became one of the city\u2019s hottest destinations. The space, which dates to 1900, has 60-foot ceilings and massive volumes that in some other hands would have felt cavernous. Dirand made it cozy. \u201cI always try to fill the emptiness,\u201d he says.<\/p>\r\n

Chalets<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

\u201cGstaad is a ski resort, but it\u2019s also known for sophistication,\u201d notes Dirand. \u201cA lot of the private chalets there are beautiful, large, and refined in the detail. There\u2019s a classic feeling, mixed with a mountain destination, and that is something I was excited to play with at The Park Gstaad.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n
