From dramatic water features to public spaces with epic proportions, Jean-Michel Gathy has pioneered the look and feel of the modern ultra-luxury resort.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\u201cAfter 40 years of designing hotels, I know that customer well\u2014what they like, what they don\u2019t like, and what they aspire to,\u201d he says. \u201cThe most important element to me always is comfort.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Belgian-born, Kuala Lumpur\u2013based architect has completed two projects for Four Seasons through his firm Denniston<\/a>: Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi<\/a> (awarded three Michelin Keys in 2025), a sleek, art-filled retreat built into a 39-story tower\u2019s top six floors, with views to Mount Fuji; and Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River<\/a>, a modern architectural statement surrounded by gardens, ponds, and waterfalls that was No. 2 on the list of the World\u2019s 50 Best Hotels 2025.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

What\u2019s next for Gathy? He has three more Four Seasons collaborations underway: a Shanghai property set in the city\u2019s former French Concession; a resort-style retreat in China\u2019s historic city Xi\u2019an; and a beach resort in the Ras al-Khaimah emirate of the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

He fills his projects with art, often of his own conception, and knows how to turn up the volume. But in guest rooms, for instance, soothing d\u00e9cor\u2014soft textures like linen and leather, furnishings that whisper rather than shout\u2014reflects his affinity for understated luxury. \u201cI\u2019m more casual chic than tuxedo polish,\u201d he says.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Geoffrey Bawa<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Sri Lankan architect\u2014whose work drew upon village layouts and who blended modernist principles with local materials, climate, and indigenous culture\u2014was an early influence. \u201cHe was the master of tropical resort design,\u201d says Gathy, who especially admires Bawa\u2019s architecture based on freestanding pavilions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Loro Piana<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Gathy\u2019s personal wardrobe\u2014everything from jackets and jeans to belts and shirts\u2014is from the Italian luxury brand. \u201cI am sick for cashmere and love their sweaters,\u201d he says. \u201cI have over 75 of them in every colour, but I especially like shades of blue. I take three or four of them every time I travel, even if it\u2019s to a warm place.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Water<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For the architect, a hotel is not complete without water features mirroring the sky by day and reflecting the room\u2019s lighting and mirrors by night. At Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi, Gathy built a reflecting pond into the 39th-floor lobby. Guests stepping off the elevator meet it before they reach the windows and experience the hotel\u2019s skyline view.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Thai Silk<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Gathy employed Thai raw silk in the guest rooms at Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, using it on everything from wall coverings to seating and sofas. One source was Bangkok\u2019s famed Jim Thompson Fabrics. The hotel\u2019s palette was drawn from the Thai national flag, marine blue, red, and white, as well as from such native orchid hues as purple, yellow, orange, and crimson.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Sculpture <\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Gathy conceives artworks for every hotel project and finds local artisans to produce them. For Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok, he collaborated with Pongsatat Uaiklang, known as Khun Dong, of Dong Sculpture, on a series of massive sculptures. These include a pair of Thai cabinet sculptures flanking the entrance, a bas-relief in the arrival courtyard depicting white elephants, and an installation inspired by the water hyacinths that line the nearby Chao Phraya River.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Malaysia <\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Belgian-born Gathy moved to Kuala Lumpur in 1992 and has lived there ever since. \u201cThe country is very, very hospitable,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s unique because of the [people] that live here\u2014the Malay, Chinese, and Indian [communities]. People are exceptionally friendly. The landscape is also gorgeous, and there are beautiful beaches.
