Mexico City\u2013based\u00a0Carla Fern\u00e1ndez<\/a> has been fascinated by traditional dress since she was a child. Travelling throughout southern Mexico with her father, she\u00a0witnessed\u00a0early on the textile traditions of the Indigenous peoples. Years later, with her business partner Cristina Rangel, Fern\u00e1ndez founded her eponymous brand, which spotlights historic techniques\u00a0practised\u00a0by artisans across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe superpower of Mexicans is creativity,\u201d she says.\u00a0The designer has become known for her bold, boxy shapes using traditional weaving, embroidery, and pleating, and also for her commitment to empowering artisans through training programs.\u00a0Here, she shares more of her\u00a0favourite\u00a0spots in the capital.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artisan-Led Boutiques<\/strong>: In Mexico City, there are many artisan-led brands and shops she adores, such as Lago<\/a> (with three locations in the metropolis) and Onora<\/a> (in the Polanco\u00a0neighbourhood). \u201cThey work together with artisans to create\u00a0new designs. I love their\u00a0selection\u00a0of pieces from all over Mexico,\u201d Fern\u00e1ndez says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coyoac\u00e1n Market<\/strong>:\u00a0\u201cIf you want Mexican street food, I truly recommend going. They have these tostadas that have shrimp and chicken, which I love. You can find everything there\u2014grasshoppers and cheese from Oaxaca. I also love to shop for flowers. On Sundays, they have tlacoyos, these tortillas with beans, fava, or cheese inside.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Autonomous University of Mexico<\/strong><\/a>: “They have beautiful grounds.” Make sure to stop at the Central Library, which is covered with the world’s largest mural: an extraordinary four-sided tiled mosaic by Juan O’Gorman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museo\u00a0Anahuacalli<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0\u201cAn amazing museum, which now has a contemporary art program that is held by a brilliant curator, Karla Ni\u00f1o de Rivera Torres.\u00a0It\u2019s really progressive.\u00a0They have a lot of workshops and music festivals, so\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0definitely worth\u00a0seeing\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0going on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Masala y\u00a0Ma\u00edz<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0\u201cThey just received their first Michelin star. I saw\u00a0them [grow]\u00a0from the very beginning; we used to be\u00a0neighbours, but [now]\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0moved downtown. Their food is just stunning. I love the shrimp, and they have this fried tortilla that has birria [stewed meat] inside\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0so delicious.\u201d\u00a0[Read more about Mexico City’s food scene here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lamb<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0eat a lot of British food, but I love this tiny little restaurant in Roma. They have really good oysters, as well as fish and\u00a0chips\u00a0and a delicious pea salad. I also usually order a glass of natural wine or cider.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ticuchi<\/a><\/strong>: “I don\u2019t go to Polanco much, but I really like going to Ticuchi\u2014they have the best vegan tacos and amazing mezcal. There\u2019s also a sculpture by my husband (Pedro Reyes<\/a>) in the entrance.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Mano<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cEverything is about Mexico [here]!\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0super relaxed with a beautiful garden. I like to\u00a0go and have\u00a0a hot\u00a0chocolate and sweet bread, but they [also] cook the tortillas by hand and have\u00a0really good\u00a0tacos.\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0a beautiful store where you can buy good mezcal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sal\u00f3n\u00a0Palomilla<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0really great\u00a0bar.\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0get the delicious organic orange wine, which they get from winemakers in Valle de Guadalupe. They have good music from DJs\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0live, so you\u00a0have to\u00a0check the calendar.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a great\u00a0option\u00a0for Sunday nights.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Day\u00a0of the Dead,\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0miss the Pan de Muerto [sweet brioche-style bread]. The hotel is where Fashion Week [events] happen, so I [also] go there to see the shows! The staff are so sweet and gentle.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
