But for one of the gallery\u2019s curators, Francesca Whitlum-Cooper, it\u2019s Francisco de Zurbaran\u2019s <em>Saint Margaret of Antioch<\/em> (in Gallery 30) that shouldn\u2019t be missed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time I look at Zurbaran\u2019s picture of Saint Margaret,\u201d Whitlum-Cooper says, \u201cI fall in love with the bright red of her skirt, her beautifully painted <em>alforjas<\/em>, or saddlebags, the amazing geometric swirls of her straw hat \u2013 it\u2019s a surprise every time to look down at her feet and remember that there\u2019s a menacing dragon prowling around them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, there\u2019s something very modern and powerful about Saint Margaret\u2019s direct gaze,\u201d the curator continues, \u201cso cool and calm, so confident in her faith, the dragon\u2019s presence doesn\u2019t bother her in the least.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"body_block_5\" class=\"body-block body-cta large-body-media body-block-cta-small-body\">\n<div class=\"body-cta-container\">\n<div class=\"cta-text-container\">\n<h3>Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"cta-btn-container\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/reservations.fourseasons.com\/?hotelCode=LON509\" data-owscode=\"LON509\" class=\"btn btn-primary btn-small fs-booking-widget\">Book Now<\/a>\n        <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"body_block_6\" class=\"body-block text-block body-block-article-content-block\">\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<h2>Paris:<em> Death of the Virgin<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>While the notorious crowd swarms around Leonardo\u2019s most famous work, the <em>Mona Lisa<\/em>, at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.louvre.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louvre<\/a>, slip away to see Caravaggio\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.louvre.fr\/en\/oeuvre-notices\/death-virgin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Death of the Virgin <\/em><\/a>(1606). This Italian baroque masterpiece shows the Virgin Mary\u2019s mortal body as you\u2019ve never seen it depicted before. It\u2019s one of his most iconic depictions of the indigenous peoples of Mexico, and the first major Rivera painting to enter a public art collection in the U.S. But as you meander through the collections, be sure not to overlook the paintings of German expressionist Max Pechstein.<\/p>\n<p>Although he\u2019s not as well known as his contemporaries Wassily Kandinsky and Emil Nolde, he played an important part in the breakthrough of the style. Pechstein survived the turmoil of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century \u2013 and was incredibly skilled at translating this onto the canvas. Jackson Pollock\u2019s <em>One: Number 31, 1950<\/em> is an iconic piece of American abstract expressionism that is often overlooked since it doesn\u2019t really \u201clook like\u201d anything in the conventional sense. But what you\u2019re really seeing in this painting is Pollock\u2019s dramatic, dynamic movements, throwing paint (and himself) around. Bahadur was known for capturing the busy scenes and colourful characters of early 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century Mumbai, then known as Bombay, and this is a perfect example.<\/p>\n<p>But another of his works, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdlmuseum.org\/collections\/early-modern-period.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Maratha Lady<\/em><\/a> from 1916, should not be overlooked. Rather than depicting a busy scene, here Bahadur focuses on one strong woman looking straight at the viewer, with a rural scene in the background. While you wait for the crowd to thin out, make your way to AIC\u2019s Gallery 265 and see Georgia O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s <em>The White Place in the Sun<\/em> (1943). This shows you a completely different side of the U.S. \u2013 the sparse desert and smooth yet striking rock formations of the White Place near Abiquiu in New Mexico. The geological formation in the White Place had been smoothed and whittled by water and wind over centuries, until it eventually resembled spires and cliffs, and O\u2019Keeffe contrasts its undulating
