5 Places to Hook 'Em Horns
A 2013 University of Texas graduate, Alyssa interned at the Hotel before taking on a full-time position as guest recognition coordinator. She continues to show her Longhorn pride as the “UT Concierge,” charged with helping visiting students and parents navigate their way around campus and beyond.
Watch the Game
If you’re not cheering on the Longhorns at Darrell K. Royal Stadium, you can still show your support at some of Austin’s best game day watching spots. When I want to stay close to campus, I head over to Pluckers near campus for delicious wings and a fun college football atmosphere. If it’s an evening game, I like to stay in the downtown area so I’ll stop by The Tavern or Doc’s on SoCo, both longtime Longhorn favourites for great burgers and beer. The Cheddar Blanket burger at The Tavern is my favourite!
Get UT Gear
Wearing the iconic burnt orange is a must and you can easily find a cute summer dress or button-up at the Co-op right by campus. But don’t forget the accessories! A great pair of leather boots from Allens Boots or a burnt orange ring or earrings from Kendra Scott, both located not too far from the Hotel in South Congress, complete any outfit perfectly.
Tailgate in Style
During my years as a student, I loved spending game day at the Bob Bullock Museum parking lot just off campus, where a mix of student organization tailgates were always underway. But now that I've graduated, my new favourite spot is Scholz Beer Garden, just a 10-minute walk from the stadium. Not only do they feature all the pre-game showings, they also have great live music to get you revved up and a vast selection of German beer. And because I bleed burnt orange through and through, stopping by the Texas Exes Alumni Center is on the top of my tailgating list too!
Celebrate a Win
Pluckers is a great spot to celebrate a win, although it tends to get pretty crowded since they offer free wings when UT wins. An alternative I love in the same area is Trudy’s, a modern Mexican restaurant with true Austin style and delicious – but dangerously potent – Mexican martinis. Another option close to the Hotel on Rainey Street is Bangers, an amazing sausage house and beer garden that’s popular with locals.
Find a Photo Opp
As you walk through campus, be sure to take a photo in front of the UT Tower – don’t forget to put your horns up! For the best photo opp, though, visit the Tower after a football victory since it will be lit up in beautiful burnt orange.
