Meet Chief Concierge Jorge Sousa
Need a dinner reservation? Directions to the beach? Or simply want to send a postcard back home? Meet Chief Concierge Jorge Sousa. “A concierge at the Hotel can be your best friend,” Sousa tells us. “We can help with recommendations on where to go and what to do, make bookings on your behalf, or help plan a memorably perfect event. Helping plan a wedding proposal is definitely a highlight for any concierge!”
Sousa is a long-time member of Les Clefs d’Or, or the Golden Keys Society, a special international society of concierges that requires prospective members to pass a rigorous exam.
“I started as a concierge in 1986,” Sousa says, “but for the past 10 and a half years I've been chef concierge at Four Seasons Hotel Sydney. So I've been doing this job for 27 years. It’s changed a lot in that time – back in the day we had a handwritten ‘concierge bible,’ which had thousands of entries and had to be updated every month. We’d get the most junior concierge to check every phone number, every listing, and make any updates by hand. Thank God for the Internet!”
Portuguese-born Sousa speaks Portuguese, Spanish and some Japanese, thanks to his time in Japan and his Japanese wife. “I love meeting our guests – especially those from overseas,” he says.
For Sousa, one of the great satisfactions of the job happens when guests come back and tell him about their day or night. “It makes me happy to know I’ve helped create a great holiday memory,” he says.
