Attractions A thriving trading district in the 1800s for Bugis and Arab traders dealing in coffee, gold dust, spices and pearls, Arab Street continues this trading lineage today. Indonesian batiks, Persian rugs, Turkish scents, Indian silks and trinkets and antiques from the Middle East and around the world are stocked and sold by the merchants and middlemen of Arab Street.
A historical area of warehouses, godowns and shophouses on the banks of the Singapore River. Restored and refurbished as restaurants, bars and entertainment centres, they offer alfresco dining along the river's edge.
Roadside peddlers and turn-of-the-century shops can be found next to modern shopping centres in the bustling district of Chinatown. These shops sell everything from wooden Chinese clogs to compact disc players. A walk through Chinatown's numerous alleyways and side-streets will reveal craftsmen practising age-old arts and customs such as Chinese calligraphy, effigy making, idol carving and joss stick making.
Dedicated to the civilians who died during the Japanese occupation in World War II, the memorial features four tapering white columns reaching 70 metres (225 feet) into the sky, each representing a different ethnic group.

Jurong Bird Park
Southeast Asia's largest bird sanctuary, Jurong Bird Park is home to over 7,000 birds of 600 species. With its landscaped environment and impressive aviaries, the park offers visitors an educational and entertaining experience.
The tranquil and beautifully landscaped grounds of the Kranji War Memorial are a fitting tribute to the courage of the Allied troops who died in the defence and fall of Singapore during World War II. The names of those who died are inscribed on the walls, and a register is available from the custodian for viewing.
Lau Pa Sat
Built in 1894, Lau Pa Sat was first a wet market, then a food centre and is now a 24-hour food court, offering shopping, food and entertainment. It is the largest remaining Victorian filigree cast-iron structure in Southeast Asia.

Mandai Orchid Gardens
Singapore's largest commercial orchid gardens, featuring a whole hillside covered with orchids. Incentive and convention groups can have new orchid varieties named after them.

Singapore Botanic Gardens
The Singapore Botanic Gardens are a combination of primary jungle and manicured gardens. Spread over 52 hectares (128 acres), the gardens are home to thousands of species of plant life, including many rare specimens. Admission is free.
Singapore Zoological Gardens
The Singapore Zoological Gardens is one of the world's most spectacular zoos. The open-concept zoo uses natural barriers such as streams, rock walls and vegetation to separate animals from visitors.
The Arts House at The Old Parliament
The Arts House at The Old Parliament, a new arts and lifestyle space has transformed Singapore's oldest surviving government building. Renamed and re-launched The Arts House, the building combines the charm of colonial architecture with cutting edge contemporary visual arts, music, dance, film, comedy and theatre by Singaporean and international artists.

Asian Civilisations Museum
The Asian Civilisations Museum at Empress Place occupies over 14,000 square metres (150,700 square feet) and features 11 exhibition galleries, two dining outlets, a museum shop, a fully equipped auditorium and a function room with spectacular views of the Singapore River. The museum and educational institute is the largest in Singapore and the region.
Changi Prison Museum
Has on record the daily life of the prisoners during World War II through a display of photographs, paintings and sketches. Admission is free.
Fuk Tak Chi Street Museum
Singapore's oldest temple, now restored as a museum to inform and educate visitors about the country's rich heritage. Admission is free.
The museum gives visitors a glimpse at 7,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture. Admission is free.
This museum is dedicated to exploring the legacy and heritage of the unique Peranakan culture.
The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is one of the first in Southeast Asia to offer international standard museum facilities and programmes. The Museum houses the national art collection of Singapore and has the largest collection of 20th-century Southeast Asian art. Its 10,000 square metre floor space includes 14 full climate-controlled galleries, interactive programmes, some of the Museum's collection on a large visual monitor, a reference library, an auditorium, a multi-purpose hall, a museum shop, courtyards and a café.
Singapore Philatelic Museum
A treat for both stamp and non-stamp collectors, displaying stamps dating back to 1907.

Esplanade Theatres on the Bay
The Esplanade Theatres on the Bay is Singapore's newest and most exciting performance arts complex, located on the waterfront. The centre is comprised of a 1,600-seat Concert Hall, a 2,000-seat Theatre, a Recital Studio, rehearsal studios and outdoor performing spaces. Also on site, the Esplanade Mall offers a diverse retail mix. Meanwhile, art lovers can delight in reading and audiovisual materials in the library at Esplanade, the first themed library covering music, dance, film and theatre, overlooking Marina Bay. The Esplanade offers a variety of performances, from musicals to dance to theatre, with outdoor shows as well as lunchtime concerts.
