TCM Diagnosis

To reach a successful diagnosis, a traditional Chinese doctor identifies meaningful connections between a vast number of the body's processes. In TCM, there are four examination techniques that inform the diagnosis:

Observing – The doctor observes the patient during the consultation, noticing body language and physical features such as the eyes, tongue, complexion, etc.

Listening and Smelling – Traditionally, doctors would gather information about a patient's well-being by listening to the sound of their breathing and voice, and smelling for unusual odours. These days, patients often describe specific conditions and bodily changes they have noticed.

Inquiring – The doctor asks about the patient's medical background, lifestyle, eating and sleeping habits, etc.

Feeling – The doctor feels pulse points on the patient's wrists to assess the condition of different body systems.
