Room for Success
“Dining rooms” is an everyday expression we rarely think twice about. Yet, for its Pudong hotel, thinking twice about dining rooms led Four Seasons to create two restaurants that are as distinctive as their cuisine is exceptional. One restaurant is perfect for lively people watching, while the other is designed for privacy and discretion.
The see-and-be-seen spot at Four Seasons Hotel Pudong, Shanghai, is Camelia. A fun, all-day restaurant and glamorous nightspot, Camelia is patterned into hip enclaves with different cuisines and ambience. An outdoor terrace seeming to float on water is one of the choices. In another area, soaring racks of single malt scotch and whisky define the lounge and bar. A stylish sushi counter waits near Camelia’s entrance, and a private grill room is tucked into a quiet corner. From most seats, however, the temptation is to see who’s who in every direction.
At the other extreme is Shàng-Xí, the epitome of discreet chic. The name of this Chinese restaurant refers to the person in charge of royal dinners – or the prime place at a luxurious feast. Certainly, these are fitting images for this elegant restaurant and its distinguished clientele.
Its public dining room offers only 22 coveted seats for à la carte dining. Beyond are Shanghai’s most exclusive and exquisite private dining rooms, each one themed around a unique semi-precious stone.
China’s royal gemstone is jade, said to symbolize all good things: prosperity, longevity, fertility, serenity, wisdom, moderation and stability. This comes to life in the Salon Jade and Salon Purple Jade, each of which seat 12. Purple being the rarest colour of jade, the latter is suitably rich, spacious and residential.
Salon Amber, which represents courage, Salon Agate and Salon Pearl are all intimate rooms seating 10. The pearl is often depicted with dragons in Chinese art, and symbolizes such auspicious traits as perfection, enlightenment and wealth.
No doubt, the future of global prosperity will be discussed between the walls of these very special rooms.
