Vibrant Van Gogh
The intricate pattern of an emperor moth. An intensely close-up examination of vibrantly hued iris blooms. Pieces of fruit that appear to tumble out of the frame. These are only a few subjects of the more than 40 masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh that make up the Van Gogh Up Close exhibition. It is the first exhibition to explore how and why the master artist made such radical style changes.
This remarkable and exclusive collection can be viewed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from February 1 to May 6, 2012. These works, borrowed from collections around the world, have never before been seen together, and Philadelphia is the only American city on the tour.
Created between 1886 and 1890, in a fierce period of daring creativity and experimentation before van Gogh's death by his own hand, the works represent the artist's final legacy. In a significant departure from conventional approaches, van Gogh played with focus and depth of field, using elements such as tightly cropped views, extreme close-ups of natural materials such as wheat sheaves and tree trunks, and a brash and lively use of paint, colour and brushwork. This departure did nothing less than alter the course of modern painting.
