The town covers an area 14 miles (22 kilometres) long and only half a mile (less than a kilometre) wide. Palm Beach history dates back to the early 1890s, when Henry Morrison Flagler – a partner in Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller – visited the sandy island and decided to build a great hotel. To make it easily accessible, he committed to extending his Florida East Coast Railroad south to Lake Worth. The town quickly became established as a luxury residential and resort enclave – with a population that now varies from 19,000 to 40,000, depending on the season. The focal point is Worth Avenue – lined with designer boutiques, restaurants and galleries, and known as one of world’s most prestigious shopping streets. Beyond beautiful year-round weather, Palm Beach attractions include distinctive architecture; a winter social season; spectator sports such as jai alai, polo and spring-training baseball; and inspiring settings for golf and tennis.
