This city of two million people is 250 kilometres (155 miles) north of Florence and 250 kilometres (155 miles) west of Venice. Milan lies in the middle of the Lombard plain and is bordered by the Po, the Ticino and the Adda rivers. The city's position is reflected in its name, which has its roots in the Latin Mediolanum ("in the middle of the plain").
