General information

Originally inhabited by the Celts, Milan was conquered by the Romans in 222 BC and since then has been a flourishing commercial centre. This city of two million people is 250 kilometres (155 miles) north of Florence and 250 kilometres (155 miles) west of Venice.

Milan lies in the middle of the Lombard plain and is bordered by the Po, the Ticino and the Adda rivers. The city's position is reflected in its name, which has its roots in the Latin Mediolanum ("in the middle of the plain"). The city is a 30-minute drive from the Northern Lakes, two hours from the famous ski resorts of the Alps and two hours from the Italian Riviera.
