Attractions On this tropical island, you can view some of the world's most endangered species, including the Mauritius kestrel, the pink pigeon, the day gecko and the Aldabran giant tortoise.
Also known as the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, this botanical garden is the oldest in the southern hemisphere. It is famous for its 85 varieties of palm trees, as well as its giant water lilies, spices, medicinal plants and fish ponds.
Discover the fascinating history of sugar cane in Mauritius. This interactive exhibition covers over 5,000 square metres (53,800 square feet) and is situated at the heart of an old sugar mill. You can visit the tropical boutique featuring unique gifts and souvenirs while sampling special unrefined sugars and the local rum.
City tours Centrally located on the island of Mauritius, the town of Curepipe is an excellent shopping destination, with stores selling items including handmade ship models, duty-free jewellery and Asian handicrafts. Curepipe is also home to the island's only European-style casino. While in Curepipe, visit the Trou aux Cerfs (Crater of Stags), an extinct volcano that offers a spectacular view of the west coast.
Located in the northwest, Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius and the island's largest city, as well as its main port in the Indian Ocean.
Excursions Casela Yemen Nature Escapade The Casela Nature & Leisure Park and Casela Yemen Nature Escapade give visitors the opportunity to view the vast open spaces on the west coast of Mauritius. You can enjoy a hands-on experience with wildlife at the park's petting farm or take part in an active day of exploration on a guided excursion. The park features lions, tigers, zebras, ostriches, African wild boars and over 140 bird species from all five continents.
Domain de L'Etoile's 6,000 hectares (14,800 acres) of mountainous landscape make up the best-preserved region of Mauritius. Enjoy the lush valleys, natural rivers and panoramic views of more than half the island. The domain is the habitat of several species of wild animals and is rich with indigenous plants and trees, including the most ancient ebony trees in Mauritius.
Museums Opened in 1995, the Mauritius Postal Museum is located on the ground floor of the post office headquarters in Port Louis. The museum showcases a display of philatelic archives and paraphernalia dating back to the mid-19th century. Entrance to the museum is complimentary.
Preserved as a national heritage site, this museum is located in Mahebourg on the bank of the La Chaux River. It houses objects recovered in 1933 and 1934 from the La Magicienne shipwreck.
Situated in the heart of Port Louis, the Natural History Museum is located on the ground floor of the Mauritius Institute building. Built in the early 1880s, this national treasure is the oldest museum in Mauritius and one of the oldest in southern Africa. It showcases the flora, fauna and birds of Mauritius and the Mascarene Islands.
Shopping This unique shopping area, famous for its garments and textiles, also offers a variety of restaurants, bars and discos and La Cuvette beach.
As the capital city of Mauritius, Port Louis is famous as a shoppers' paradise. The Air Mauritius Centre, the Happy World Centre and the Caudan Waterfront are just a few of the places to visit while searching for unique clothing, jewellery, souvenirs and more.
