General information

At the centre of the Hawaiian archipelago, a few miles west of Maui, the tiny island of Lana‘i is an unspoiled paradise of spectacular sea coast and enchanting highland forest. The island is 98% privately owned – providing a sense of uncrowded natural calm unique within the Hawaiian islands.

Lana‘i is approximately 13 miles (21 kilometres) wide and 18 miles (29 kilometres) long, with ground elevations varying from sea level to more than 3,400 feet (1,036 metres). The central landscape offers mist-shrouded mountains and forests of Cook Island pines where wild deer roam freely. The coastline is ringed by secluded white-sand beaches, rugged red lava cliffs and crystal-clear waters. A place of deep cultural significance, Lana‘i features many historic sites, old fishing villages and unique topographical attractions. The island’s only community is the quaint plantation town of Lana‘i City, with a full-time population of just 3,000.

For nearly a century, Lana‘i was home to Hawaii’s largest pineapple plantation and was known as the Pineapple Island for its fields of golden pineapples. Now Lana‘i has been transformed into an exclusive island destination with two Four Seasons resorts – each presenting a distinctive Hawaiian experience. Four Seasons Resort Lana‘i at Manele Bay offers ocean-side relaxation and recreation, while Four Seasons Resort Lana‘i, The Lodge at Koele offers dynamic sporting adventure in the green central highlands.

Seasonal highlights

May

May Day – In Hawaii, May Day (also known as Lei Day) is celebrated on the first day of May. A wonderful tradition of lei-making is one of the most beautiful festivities practised island-wide today. Representing the true spirit of Aloha, a lei is given to (or received from) a special someone.

July

Pineapple Festival – Each summer, Lana'i celebrates its unique heritage with the Pineapple Festival, a colourful event paying homage to the island’s favourite fruit. This festival brings the community and visitors together to enjoy local food, entertainment, fun and relaxation.

September - October

Aloha Festival – Honouring Hawaii’s heritage and culture for 59 years, Aloha Festivals celebrate with pageantry, parades, street parties, concerts and family activities that span six islands during September and October. This was created as a public festival to honour the cosmopolitan heritage of Hawaii through music, dance and history.

December

Christmas Festival and Tree Lighting Ceremony – A traditional fun-filled community event on the first week of December that is open to everyone. This special occasion brings everyone together to enjoy the lighting of an 80-foot (24-metre) Cook Island pine Christmas tree, picture taking with Santa, craft fairs, local foods and live entertainment. There is no better place to catch the Christmas spirit of the Islands.
