At Attractions on this page Attractions The A-Ma Temple is a single complex with a variety of pavilions dedicated to the worship of different deities representing Chinese culture, inspired by Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. Take a graceful and romantic glide down the canal at The Cotai Strip. Built between 1622 and 1638, the fortress contains the Guia Chapel, originally established by Clarist nuns, with frescoes depicting both Western and Chinese themes. The Guia Lighthouse also stands as a symbol of Macao's maritime, military and missionary past. Built in 1784, the Leal Senado Building was Macao's first municipal chamber. It has retained its original master walls and layout, including the courtyard garden in the back. Largo do Lilau is situated in the old Christian quarter, where the Portuguese first settled in Macao. Visitors will be captivated by the Mediterranean and Art Deco influences. Residences with traditional Chinese architecture surround the area, illustrating Macao's multicultural background. Lou Kau Mansion is one of the sights within the historic centre of Macau, located close to Largo do Senado. Built in 1889 as the original home of Lou Kau, a prominent Chinese merchant, Lou Kau Mansion is a traditional Chinese courtyard home. Built in 1874, the Moorish Barracks were constructed to accommodate an Indian regiment. The building is neo-classical with elements of Moghul influence. Built in 1617, Mount Fortress was the principal military structure for defending the city. It was equipped with cannons, military barracks and supplies to endure a siege lasting up to two years. The Ruins of St. Paul's are the façade of what was originally the Church of Mater Dei, built in 1602. This site is now the symbolic altar of the city. This section of the old city walls is the surviving segment of the structures built in 1569 for the city's defence. Considered Macao's urban centre for centuries, Senado Square is the most popular venue for public events and celebrations. The biggest public library in Macau, the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library officially opened in 1958. The building that houses it was constructed in 1894 and first owned by Dona Carolina Cunha. The mansion was later purchased by Hong Kong businessman Sir Robert Ho Tung in 1918. He used it as a retreat and lived there between 1941 and 1945. After he passed away in 1955, the building was presented to the government to be converted to a public library in accordance with his will. A new library building was constructed in 2005 near the back garden of the mansion. St. Augustine Square features a variety of beautiful buildings with cobblestone pavement that unifies the area and reflects a traditional Portuguese landscape. The Macau Maritime Museum features an ethnology exhibition hall, a maritime history hall, a maritime technology hall and an aquarium gallery. Located on Monte Fort, the museum has three levels, with exhibits on the genesis of Macau, social customs, architecture, sports, art and cuisine over the past four centuries. The Macau Museum of Art is the largest museum of art and cultural relics in the city and is located beside the Macau Cultural Centre. The museum houses collections that include Guandong paintings and calligraphy from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Macau Wine Museum offers a look at the history of wine-making in Macau. Visitors can explore three distinct areas of the museum – the historical information section, the wine cellar and the exhibitions section. Established in 1921, the Taipa Houses Museum includes five green houses in the style typical of Macau. In the late 1990s, the house were remodelled and transformed into museums in recognition of their architectural and cultural value. The five houses are named Macanese House, House of the Islands, House of the Portugal Regions, Exhibition Gallery and House for Reception. Shopping DFS Galleria Macao is situated in the heart of the Cotai Strip at Located at The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel, The Grand Canal Shoppes boasts retail space of over 92,900 square metres (1,000,000 square feet).
