General informationThe capital and largest city of Portugal, Lisbon is full of history and cultural traditions, and abounds with magnificent castles, monuments, churches and museums. Bordered by one of Europe’s widest rivers, the Tagus, the city spreads across the slopes of seven hills and down to the Atlantic Ocean. The town’s origins date back to approximately 1200 BC. Under Roman rule from 205 BC, it was led by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, then taken over by the Moors in the 8th century. Portugal’s first king was Afonso Henriques who captured Lisbon in 1147. Over the centuries, the city grew to be a major political, economic and cultural centre – with a population today of approximately three million inhabitants.
