Highlights

One of only four inhabited islands in an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, Langkawi is a nature-lover’s dream – relished for its equatorial climate, tropical flora and fauna, and clear emerald waters. Two-thirds of the island’s dramatic mountainous landscape is covered with rainforest, while vibrant coral reefs lie just off shore.

Once a haven for pirates, Langkawi’s intriguing cultural and ethnic diversity can be traced back to its days as a centre for Chinese, Indian and Arab traders. And, in a spectacular setting on Langkawi’s northern cape, Four Seasons Resort Langkawi offers easy access to discoveries on land and at sea, from bird watching, snorkelling and diving to jungle trekking, golf and island-hopping tours.

Seasonal highlights IN LANGKAWI

February

  • Ironman Triathlon Langkawi Malaysia – What started off as a novel idea among a group of friends in 1978 is today an international event that tests human fitness and endurance. Ironman made its debut on the legendary island of Langkawi in 2000, and has returned to the island every year since. The triathlon starts off with a 3.8-kilometre (2.4-mile) swim at the Kuah Jetty, takes the athletes through various challenges and ends at the famous Eagle promenade.
  • Chinese New Year – The Chinese New Year is set according to the lunar calendar. A week before the auspicious event, special attention is given to various household gods. On the eve of the New Year, all members of the family are expected to gather for the annual reunion dinner, where one can look forward to a sumptuous spread of Chinese dishes.

February-March

  • The BMW Royal Langkawi International Regatta – The first Royal Langkawi International Regatta was held in 2003, and it has since graced the shores of Langkawi as an exciting annual event.

March

  • Le Tour de Langkawi - Langkawi plays an important part in the race, hailed as one of the most exciting cycling events outside Europe, where top cyclists from around the world race in cities throughout Malaysia.

November

  • Raja Muda International Regatta – An annual event during the month of November, not to be missed. The regatta, launched in 1990 as a sequel to five annual offshore series, links three of the most popular islands off the west coast of Malaysia – Pangkor, Penang and Langkawi. The race starts from Port Klang, sails to Pangkor and ends in Langkawi one week later. The regatta has gained an international reputation over the years. Yachts are entered from places as far afield as Australia, the Philippines and Hong Kong.
  • Hari Raya Puasa – One of the most important and celebrated events in the Muslim calendar, Hari Raya Puasa marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. The joyous event is marked by prayers in the mosque and by asking for forgiveness from family members. At this time, it is customary for Muslims to visit friends and relatives, and to open their homes to visitors. This is also an excellent time to feast on traditional kueh, savouries and other well-known Malay dishes.

November-January

  • Mega Sale Carnival – A duty-free shopping paradise.
