Attractions Koh Samui's most famous landmark – sitting 15 metres (50 feet) tall, the Big Buddha was built in 1972 by locals to give visitors a place to pay respect to Buddha.
At the water’s edge, in the grounds of Wat Laem Sor, the ornately designed Laem Sor Pagoda is covered with countless small yellow tiles that shimmer under the sun, making it appear golden, even from a distance.
In the south of the island, Na Tian Butterfly Garden is a kaleidoscope of colour provided by hundreds of spectacular butterflies. There is also an Insect Museum, featuring rare insects from Thailand and other countries, and a bee house.
Near the Butterfly Garden at Laem Set beach, the aquarium features a collection of tropical marine life, including sharks, turtles and tropical fish. Adjacent to the
aquarium, the Tiger Zoo houses Bengal tiger cubs and leopards.
The Samui Snake Farm features snakes indigenous to Koh Samui – as well as centipedes, scorpions and displays of traditional activities. An entertaining yet informative show is offered twice daily.
Wat Sumret is home to a valuable collection of images of the Buddha, including a white marble statue of the Buddha believed to be hundreds of years old. Two other temples nearby, Wat Kiri Wongkaram and Wat Khunaram, hold the mummified bodies of the two most revered monks on the island.
Excursions Angthong National Marine Park is a protected reserve that encompasses more than 40 islands with sheer limestone cliffs, virgin rainforests, white-sand beaches and offshore
coral reefs. The park’s diverse wildlife includes hair-nosed otters, white-bellied sea eagles and langurs, the Asian long-tailed monkey. Day trips offer marvellous opportunities for adventure-seekers to snorkel, swim or kayak from the pristine beaches.
Sailing through the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Siam, the cruise takes in Koh Pha Ngan, a lush mountainous island that is the largest of Samui’s neighbours, and Koh Ma, a small island that is a favourite spot for snorkelling and sunbathing.
The tour through Koh Samui’s mountainous interior can include hiking along the trails, elephant trekking to the centre of the island and a visit to the Secret Buddha Garden.
Situated in the southwest corner of the island (a 45-minute drive and a further 60-minute trek on elephant away) are the two Na Muang Falls. Take a dip in the large natural pool at the base of Na Muang One, the most accessible of Samui’s waterfalls. An easy 10-minute hike up a rocky path leads you to the Na Muang Two, considered to be the most beautiful and dramatic waterfall on the island. Water levels depend on the time of year and rainfall.
