Attractions Koh Samui's most famous landmark – sitting 15 metres (50 feet) tall, the Big Buddha was built in 1972 by locals to give visitors a place to pay respect to Buddha.
In a Thai-style house, visitors are able to observe activities of bees in a natural environment, as well as
numerous species of butterflies and rare insects. Insects displayed are amongst the most beautiful in the region.
Sitting at the water's edge, the pagoda is covered with countless small yellow tiles that shimmer under the sun, making it appear golden in colour.
Near the Butterfly Garden at Laem Set beach, the aquarium features a collection of tropical marine life, including sharks, turtles and tropical fish. Housed at the Tiger Zoo are Bengal tiger cubs and leopards.
Wat Sumret is home to a valuable collection of images of the Buddha, including a white marble statue of the Buddha believed to be hundreds of years old. Wat Kiri Wongkaram and Wat Khunaram hold the mummified bodies of the two most revered monks on the island.
The farm features snakes indigenous to Koh Samui, as well as centipedes, scorpions and displays of cock fighting.
Excursions More than 40 jungle-covered islands feature sheer limestone cliffs, tropical rainforests and white-sand beaches. Observe the diverse array of wildlife inhabiting the islands, including hair-nosed otters, white-bellied sea eagles and langur, the Asian long-tailed monkey. Recommended for adventure-seeking individuals, day trips generally include snorkelling, swimming or kayaking from the pristine beaches 31 kilometres (19 miles) west of Samui.
Experience the bliss of full-day or three-hour sunset cruises aboard a Siamese junk-rigged schooner, sailing through the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Siam. See Koh Pha Ngan, the largest of Samui's neighbouring islands, with mountains, tropical forests and an abundance of coconut fields. Koh Ma, a small island on the northwestern corner of Koh Phangan, is a favourite spot for snorkellers and sunbathers.
Trek through the mountainous interior or ride elephants during a four-hour excursion to the centre of the island.
Situated in the southwest corner of the island (a 45-minute drive and a further 60-minute trek on elephant away) are the two Na Muang Falls. Take a dip in the large natural pool at the base of Na Muang One, the most accessible of Samui’s waterfalls. An easy 10-minute hike up a rocky path leads you to the Na Muang Two, considered to be the most beautiful and dramatic waterfall on the island. Water levels depend on the time of year and rainfall.
