The National Museum is located on the west side of Merdeka Square and can be identified by the bronze elephant in front – a gift from Thailand's King of Siam in 1871. The museum provides an excellent overview of ancient Indonesian culture, offering the most complete collection of Indonesian relics and ethnic artwork in the country. There are five sections: Hindu and Buddhist stone carvings from the 7th to 15th centuries; an exhibit of prehistoric skulls, weapons and cooking utensils that date back 4,000 years; Indonesian ethnic crafts; a treasure room with gold trinkets, jewelled weapons, and Buddhist statues; and one of the largest collections of Chinese ceramics outside China. Complimentary tours are given in various languages.
