General informationJakarta is the capital of Indonesia and sprawls over 25 kilometres (16 miles) on the island of Java, one of thousands of islands in this country, which spreads between the Pacific and Indian oceans. The estimated population is over nine million people. The city centre fans out from around Merdeka (Freedom) Square, which contains the central gold-tipped landmark of the National Monument (Monas). It is Jakarta's most prominent landmark. The port of entry for many tourists and business people, Jakarta is home to a dynamic contrast between western-style skyscrapers, modern urban lifestyles and traditional Indonesian culture. International visitors enjoy the city's history, excellent shopping and decadent nightlife.
