Sky and mountain

To the voyager, the mountain first appears as a tiny speck on the horizon, at the intersection of sky and water. Closer, it becomes an island, and closer still, a mountain. Today, the mountain named Hualalai adds new dimensions to the joys of exploration.

Hikers blaze trails and mountain bikers ride them, as volcanic cinder crunches below. Above the ground, the Big Island Zipline gives wings to the voyager's spirit on the other side of the mountain.

Sky and mountain are the portal to the lofty heights of the island. Once red with fire and eruption, the mauka lands are fertile soil for exploration. Journey to the uplands with us.

Voyages beyond Hualalai

Big Island Zipline

Experience a feeling like no other, soaring in the Pololu Valley on a zipline that will send your blood rushing. Enjoy the beauty of this valley and nature at its best.

Volcano National Park

Explore the many trails at Volcano National Park. Spend a full day watching a live volcano and learn about the history of Kīlauea. Enjoy a hike through a rainforest, take a dip in the champagne ponds, traverse a crater and walk through a lava tube. As the sun sets, your voyage can end the way the creation of the Hawaiian Islands began – watching lava flow into the ocean in a spectacular scene of steam and lights.

Mauna Kea

Mauna Kea is the home of the ancient snow goddess, Poliahu. Drive to the summit, and experience the perspective of being in the clouds. After an incredible sunset, you will see the constellations and vast galaxy that guided the Polynesians on their voyage to Hawaii.

Pololū Valley Lookout and Kamehameha Rock

Rain and wind have eroded the northeastern part of the island, creating the dramatic Pololū Valley and distant islets. Experienced hikers might venture down the trail to the black-sand beach (please note that it can be muddy up to the knees). Between mile-markers 25 and 26, watch for Kamehameha Rock on the east side of the road. This rock was carried out of Pololū Valley by King Kamehameha.
