Camp activities

Mahout training, elephant trekking

Upon arrival at the Camp, guests will receive traditional mahout outfits. Training starts with learning to bathe and feed an elephant. Together with the elephant's own mahout, guests learn the basic commands needed to drive an elephant, which they will have an opportunity to practise on an exploration of the Thai jungle.

Guests wanting to experience a customary daybreak in the jungle are invited to join the mahouts in getting the elephants ready for trekking by bathing and scrubbing the gentle giants in the river or pond.

Sundowners will be served when the sun begins to set over the horizon, after which the elephants will be released into the jungle for night feeding.

Golden Triangle excursions

In a custom-designed riverboat, guests cruise the Mekong River, passing villages and temples.

Guests can also visit the town of Chiang Saen by car, where they can explore a local market, stop by a temple or do some shopping.

Note: Availability of the Mekong River cruise is subject to seasonal water level fluctuations.

Jungle trekking and nature walks

The jungle in the immediate vicinity of the Camp is a haven of exotic tropical fauna and flora. Nature treks can be self-guided, or accompanied by a local expert.

Bird watching

This is a year round activity peaking at bi-annual migration seasons. Bird books and binoculars are available in all tents and at Burma Bar and Nong Yao Restaurant for guests interested in an impromptu bird watching session.

Fishing

Explore the aquatic abundance of the Mekong or simply let the humbling anticipation of a catch calm the spirits, fishing is a favourite past time for locals as well as visitors. Fishing poles are available at the main Camp Pier for guest use.

Cooking lessons

Learn the mysteries of traditional Thai, Laotian and Burmese cooking from the Camp's team of master chefs. Use local fresh ingredients combined with distinctive regional flavours to create dishes with unique northern Thai appeal. Special cooking classes include a trip to the wet market in Chiang Saen. Fees apply.

Traditional craft classes

Local craftsmen will introduce guests to basket weaving, cloth weaving and pottery.
