Water sports

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica's two expansive beaches set the scene for the enticing array of water sports offered by the Resort daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Complimentary activities include snorkelling, boogie boarding and sea kayaking. Sporting equipment is provided, along with instruction for beginners.

Deep sea fishing

Guanacaste offers one of Costa Rica's premium fishing destinations – the Catalina Islands. The deep water to the south and west, off Flamingo and Tamarindo beaches, is home to blue, black and striped marlin, a multitude of sailfish and dorado (mahimahi).

Big-game fishing is available, 16 to 65 kilometres (10 to 40 miles) offshore. Boats used measure 9.5 to 16 metres (31 to 52 feet) and accommodate four fishers each. Every boat is equipped with high-tech communication devices, GPS, fish depth-finder, life jackets and Penn International fishing gear. Four Seasons believes in the preservation of our environment and fishing resources – as such, we encourage all bill fishing and not-for-consumption fish to be released, protecting our future resources.

Half-day excursions depart the Resort at 7:30 am and return at 12:00 noon. Full-day excursions depart the Resort at 7:30 am and return at 4:00 pm.

Scuba diving

There are many dive sites on the Guanacaste coastline, showcasing underwater life that is richly diverse in colour, species and natural volcanic rock formations. Marine life unique to this region abounds – divers will see massive schools of fish, rays, jacks, whale sharks, giant mantas, sea turtles, whitetip sharks, dolphins and more.

Diving trips include local dives, night dives and dives to the Catalina Islands. Dives include all equipment and light refreshments, while our PADI Gold Palm dive service offers PADI certifications and specialty courses with professional instructors. Featured courses include: Discover Scuba Diving, Scuba Tune-Up, PADI Open Water, Open Water Referral, Adventure Diver, Advanced Adventure Diver, Emergency First Responder, Rescue Diver and Nitrox Diver.

For guests interested in learning how to scuba dive, an instructor will be on hand poolside to demonstrate basic techniques.

Excursions are held from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm daily. Please contact the Concierge for further assistance.

Surfing

For surfing enthusiasts, the Resort is only 18.5 kilometres (10 nautical miles) from Witch's Rock, Petrero Grande, Ollie's Point and several other world famous spots routinely featured in surfing magazines. Arrangements can be made through local surf shops to transport guests to these locations by boat.

For the less-experienced or new surfer, Tamarindo is a very popular surfing destination, with two beaches: one for beginners, and the other for the slightly more advanced. Located approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes' drive southwest of the Resort, Tamarindo is on the south side of the Gulf of Papagayo. Lessons are available through local surf shops.
