Exploring Lanai

Discover the history behind must-see sites like Sweetheart Rock, Garden of the Gods and Kaunolu Village as you explore the splendour of our beautiful island.

  • Hookipa Cultural Program

Embark on a cultural journey with the Hookipa Cultral Program. Ho`okipa, meaning hospitality in Hawaiian, is an on-going series of interactive cultural classes created by Lanai’s kupuna, or Hawaiian elders, for Resort guests. As with its namesake, the program’s goal is to enrich and inspire visitors, while allowing access to the island’s most revered elders. Through the volunteer efforts of the respected kupuna, Four Seasons is able to share Lanai's rich heritage with our guests. The program allows visitors to experience an authentic sense of place combined with a deep understanding of Lanai's past, present and future.

As part of the enriching program, kupuna educate and share their cultural knowledge, oral history, tradition and art with guests. Program highlights include ukulele lessons, coconut weaving, lei making, and “talk story” sessions. The complimentary program is held at both The Lodge at Koele and Manele Bay throughout the week.

  • Hula lessons

The Hawaiian people have a rich tradition of hula (dances). This tradition teaches how to respect family, appreciate natural phenomena, memorise lengthy chants and acknowledge and honour the presence of life. Get a taste of this ancient Hawaiian tradition with private, semi-private or group lessons, available on property.

  • Lei making

The lei custom was introduced to the Hawaiian islands by early Polynesian voyagers, who used leis to beautify and distinguish wearers from others. These beautiful garlands can be constructed of flowers, leaves, shells, nuts, feathers and even the bones and teeth of various animals. Enjoy a one-hour private or semi-private lei-making lesson on the property.
