Nearby is the historic Basingstoke Canal, a haven for wildlife and swans. The canal route was determined in 1798, when Sir Henry Mildmay, then lord of the manor, detoured the canal so his peace would not be disturbed. Our guests are the recipients of Sir Mildmay’s circumnavigation as they stroll the languid waterside or lounge on the Hotel’s 21-metre (70-foot) custom-designed canal boat with room for a reception of 20, or a gathering of 8 around the oval table at its centre.

Also home to equestrian facilities housing horses and ponies, the Hotel provides on-site trainers who can lead a group of up to five riders of any experience level through the countryside on a hack. The stables are open Tuesdays to Sundays throughout the year, and it’s a great way to sharpen your riding skills or take up a brand new hobby.

Guests can also spend their time playing a lively game of croquet on an authentic croquet lawn adjacent to the Orchard, fishing on Belvedere Pond, going on a clay pigeon shoot, taking part in falconry, touring the Estate on a bike, hiking through the lush countryside, or playing tennis on the year-round courts. In addition, championship golf at Wentworth and numerous other courses is available close to the Hotel.
