My Four Seasons

Gaucho Spirit

Few symbols are as emblematic to Uruguayan culture as the gaucho - nomadic horsemen who roamed the South American pampas as early as the 1600s. While the modern era has led to gradual disappearance of this archetype, Gustavo Rodriguez - the Four Seasons’ Master of Horsemanship - is keeping the tradition alive.

Apart from evoking a handsome, South American-style John Wayne, Rodriguez is recognized as the finest “Gaucho” in the region. A horse veterinarian with extensive training in equine health and nutrition, the ranch hand has led horseback excursions from the resort for over a decade, with thousands of rides notched under his belt.

Gustavo’s stable of “Criollo Horses” - a breed native to Uruguay - have all been trained by the master himself. Ideal for novice riders, they're all over ten years old, calmer than young foals and less prone to fright.

More seasoned riders might want to try their hand at polo lessons, another popular activity at the Four Seasons and a sport long favoured by the South American elite. From mallet skills to rights of way, Rodriguez and his team will guide you through the skills and terminology of Uruguay's “Game of Kings.”
