British Art on Display
One could argue the centre of British cultural life consist mainly of football, royals, tea, and, more recently, art. From early Celtic ornamental work to the “fine art” of Constable and Turner to the Young British Artists explosion of the 90s, and contemporary graffiti artist Banksy, England has been and continues to be a force in ancient and modern art.
As Four Seasons Hotel London at Canary Wharf is situated in the East End of London, an area that’s become an important art and cultural centre the past two decades, the Hotel has commissioned and collected paintings and works on paper by contemporary British artists to display in rooms and suites.
In the lobby, Presidential and Penthouse suites hangs work by English artist Richard Whadcock whose oil paintings often depict landscapes with an ethereal photographic quality. Alex Knubley is a young Scottish artist whose works on paper inspired by her travels to the Middle East hang in the parlour area of the Hotel’s suites, as well as in the Presidential Suite. Other artists featured throughout the hotel include Wendy Sutherland, Barnaby Gorton, Sophie Benson and Michael Major.
