The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organisation for education and cultural relations. The gallery presents works by artists from Egypt and abroad.
Attractions It is the only comprehensive conference centre in the country, over 30 hectares (74 acres) of it. Of these, 58,000 square metres (624,312 square feet) have been given over to conference facilities that are nothing less than state of the art. The Centre is the very latest in conference facilities to ensure that while everything is carried with the greatest possible efficiency, and that your comfort and convenience have been seen to. To start with, the Centre is a mere ten minute drive from Cairo International Airport, a short drive from any one of several five star hotels and a five minute walk from the Cairo International Exhibition Grounds. Catering, secretarial and interpreter services are available.
The Hotel is located in the new First Residence complex in the center of Cairo. The amenities of the complex include three levels of upscale shops and services, a casino, and luxurious residences.
Many fascinating mosques to be explored in Old Cairo, including: Ibn Tulun, built between AD 876 and 879 and the oldest mosque in Cairo; Al-Azhar Mosque, constructed in AD 971 as both a mosque and madrassah (school); the Aqsunqur, or Blue, Mosque, built by Prince Aqsunqur Al-Nassery in AD 1347, so named because of its walls of isnik blue and turquoise mosaic; the Mohammed Ali Mosque (the Alabaster Mosque) within the walls of the Citadel built in AD 1183.
Dr. Hassan Ragab spent 20 years creating this most precise living recreation of ancient times. Hundreds of actors and actresses move about the village re-enacting daily life in the time of the Pharaohs. Static and interactive displays, children's entertainment and a restaurant complete the exhibit. Guided tours last two hours.

The 180-metre (590-foot) tall Cairo Tower was built in 1962. The tower features a rotating restaurant and some stunning views of the city. Located downtown in the Gezirah Island area.
The Coptic churches include Al-Kaneesah Al-Mu'allaqah (the Hanging Church) which dates back to the late 4th and early 5th century, the church of Abu Sergah (Church of St. Sergius) also founded at the end of the 4th century, and the church of Sitt Barbara (Church of St. Barbara) founded in the 5th century and rebuilt in the 10th century.
Kerdassa is noted for its embroidered cotton and silk dresses.
Haraneyya is Egypt's main center for hand-made carpets.
Dating back to the 14th century, this market is renowned for its magnificent examples of fine gold and silver work, embroidered clothing, leather goods and hand-carved woodwork. Located just east of downtown.
The boat dock is across from the Cairo Marriott Hotel. The buffet dinner is international and you will be treated to a show featuring a band and belly dancing.
Both boats are designed after the ancient Pharaonic Papyrus boats. Each boat consists of two large decks, with open buffet and a large outdoor bar. There are three different cruises each day. The last one for dinner includes an entertaining show with a band, folklore show and belly dancing.
The Pyramids of Giza are dominated by the Great Pyramid, constructed for King Cheops around 2650 B.C. Close to the eastern flank of the Pyramid of Cheops are three small pyramids dedicated to either his wives or family members. The second pyramid, built for Kephren, son of Cheops, southwest of his father's pyramid, has a simple interior with two entrances on the north side. The third one was built for Mycerinus (Menkaure), Cheops' grandson, lies southwest of the others and is the smallest of the three.
On the way to the pyramid of Kephren sits the statue of the Great Sphinx of Giza, one of the most famous monuments in the world, a legendary figure with the body of a lion and the face of a man.
Excursions Enjoy a guided walking tour through the fascinating streets of Old Cairo. Visit the Suspended Church and the Church of Abu Serga, where the Virgin Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus are said to have rested upon their arrival in Egypt. Stroll through the ancient streets to Ben Ezra, the oldest synagogue in Egypt. Then proceed to the Coptic Museum, built on the site of the Roman fortress of Babylon. The fortress houses several Coptic churches and the richest collection of Coptic art in the world. Finish this three- to four-hour tour with a visit to the Mosque of Sultan Hassan – one of the most majestic Islamic monuments in Egypt.
Drive through Giza and marvel at the eternal resting places of the pharaohs of the fourth dynasty. You will visit the three famous pyramids of the Giza Plateau and the smaller pyramids of the Princess and Queens, and feel the might of the Great Pyramid, one of the seven wonders of the world. A visit to the Sphinx and the Museum of the Solar Boat will complete this three- to four-hour trip.
Museums This museum is south of the Great Pyramid, and is built over the rectangular pit preserving a barque, the wooden boat for the king's journey with the sun god, Ra, to the afterworld. Discovered in 1954, in a completely dismantled state, the 43-metre (140-foot) cedar boat was subsequently restored.
This museum, in Old Cairo just north of the Hanging Church, offers a large collection of Christian objects, including a fine collection of icons and textiles dating as far back as AD 300. There's also a library with 7,000 books and manuscripts. Lush gardens surround the building, which is decorated with many mosaics.
This is considered one of the most prominent museums in the world. It was built during the reign of Khedive Abbass Helmi II in 1897, and opened on November 15, 1902. It has 107 halls divided into seven sections, each section devoted to one era in Egypt's history. The museum's most significant showpiece is the Tutankhamun collection.
The world's rarest and most extensive collection of Islamic art, including tapestries, pottery, carpets, inlaid metalwork, medieval weapons and armor.
Sporting/Concert venues Located on the outskirts of Cairo, the Golf and Tennis Resort is part of Dreamland City, currently the world's largest private sector development. The golf club hosts an 18 hole course with two on-course snack bars and refreshment carts, a fully stocked pro shop with equipment rental and power carts, locker rooms, international professional instruction private lessons, group clinics and video analysis, a night-lit, turf driving range with six target greens and three practice greens for putting and bunker play.
Also at the resort are eight night-lit tennis courts, a swimming pool and the Swiss Inn Restaurant and Lounge. Located 20 kilometres (16 miles) from Cairo in Dreamland City on 6th of October City Road.
The Ferousia Riding Club is part of the Gezireh Sporting Club, the largest multi-purpose sporting club in Egypt. Private lessons are available on request.
The Gezira Sporting Club is the largest multi-sport facility in Egypt. Private lessons are available by reservation in tennis, golf and horseback riding amongst others. The club has a nine hole golf course, 24 clay tennis courts and a running area.
There are many stables near the pyramids offering horseback riding and lessons. Horses are usually rented by the hour, though some block tours are available (e.g., to Saqqara, four hours away). Please contact the Concierge for recommended stables.
Katameya Heights Golf & Tennis Resort, which opened in January 1977, is a fully operational resort community for those who love the challenge of golf and tennis, while enjoying a wide variety of recreational and social facilities. Apart from the 18 and 9 hole golf courses (with lessons, practice facilities and a pro shop), the resort offers the El Shafei Tennis Ranch, spa and health club, swimming pool, kids clubhouse, and gym. The resort also offers restaurants, bars and lounges.
Theatre/Performing arts The gallery exhibits contemporary art, paintings, sculpture, by Egyptian artists and artists from abroad.
The new seven-storey opera house is considered a masterpiece of Islamic design and is equipped with the latest audiovisual technology. It houses two indoor theatres and one open-air theatre, rehearsal halls, a museum and library. The art gallery presents exhibits from Egypt and abroad. Located at the National Cultural Centre, Gezira Island.
The centre offers lectures, exhibitions, recitals, films, and excursions.
The El Zamalek Theatre presents Egyptian plays in an intimate space.
