The oldest botanical garden in America, located across Charles Street from the Boston Common, it remains a green and flowering oasis in the heart of the city. The 2.5-mile (4-kilometre) Freedom Trail travels through 16 historic sites in Beacon Hill, downtown Boston, the North End and Charlestown. A red brick or painted line connects the sites on the Trail and serves as a guide. Walking the Trail takes two or three hours – although you may prefer to linger and study the many exhibits along the way – and covers two and a half centuries of American history. In addition to the historic sites, the beauty of the sights, sounds and neighbourhoods along the way makes walking the Freedom Trail a popular activity. Regularly scheduled walking tours with colonial costumed characters, self-guided antenna audio tours, trolley tours and harbour tours are available. The Freedom Trail's starting point in the Boston Common is just a two-minute walk from the Hotel.
